are ready to be tiled at soon •* iho street* for
whtch ther are designed shall be. graded, and the
weather shall become sufficiently.settled to-admit
being ojwaed. The contracts amount, to
* Soon after the memorable fire of April, 1515, it
was decided to replace the four inch pipes in first,
second and fourth streets with larger ones, but sa
tboe is now a full Supply through the larger mains
laid in the year IWO on Gram, Water and Penn
rtreets, the-Comnutee do not believe there is any
immediate necessity for the change, but would re
commend that the connection across Wood street
be made wherever they do not exist,
About three months ago a flaw was discovered
in each of - the cylinders m the Water Works, and it
extendedao rapidly in the right hand cylinder, as
to render.it neeeaaary to replace it by a new one,
and at the came time it was thought expedient to
make some Other alterations in the engines which
the Committee expected would render them more
efficient without materially increasing the consump
tion of fuel, and it lis believed that the left hand
cylinder can be repaired after the new one is pul
in operation, which is contracted to be £eady by the
first of Feburary. Ah appropriation has been made
to defray part of the expense of this alteration,
which will cost 4,400 dollars, but the lulauce will
require a further appropriation by the next Coun
cil
