Who were the Homeridae
They were one of two- classes of
Rhapsodists. who • recited Homer's
poems; and were called Rhapsodists;
'probably fro nt their holding a staff (rah.
don) in their hands, when about to re
cite. • • •
Homer is represented as a Rhapsodist
wandering through the islands, emi, - on
the. Asiatic coast,.earning fame and a
maintenance by the recitation of his ver
ses. The class 'called- Homeridre was
the' meat diitingtiished of the Rhapso
dists. It was a name given to a family
• of them, which hat Lita head-quarters in
the island of Chirp, and pretended to be
those who'most Correctly rehearsed the
vanes of Horner. Cymethas, one of
that family, migrated to Syracuse, and
acquired great reputation by his recite

Homerids flourished; by whom much of
the heroic poetry, now, or anciently ex
- lathy, .was composed. . --
.It was this Connection with the works
of Homer, that gave rise to , the story
-that they were the authors of them. it

by which the 'oi polity could be made ac
quainted with these poems, were these
Rhapsodists and, tiomeiiine. -them
—the world owed' much undoubtedly for
transmitting these poems to posterity, to
the age of Pisistratus, who, probably, by
the assistance of hia contemporary poets,
collected in a permanent form the scat
tered fragments of this master poem . of
antiquity.
