THE WISH.
- The wish (Mi. Wilson; the wdebrated Orni.
tkologist, , ln reiPird to hiebarisl place, is, bemiti
.nally expremed in the'fallowing lines:
In some-wild forest Aide,
Under some spreading ask or swaying pine,
Or old elm festooned with the budding vine,
tetrosibe laid.
7 ifl :
t
In this Iran lonely giot.
No toot intmlive will disturb my dust ;
But o'er me songs of thit wild birdiishell twst,
Cheering the spot,
ot amid charnel doors,
Or mffine dark Ind thick with ancient, mcwild,
With tattered pall, and fringe of Ciakered toil!
• May met my berms.
But let the dewy rose, •
The snowdrop end the violet, lend perfume,
Above the spot where, in my grass) , tomb,
Year after year,
Within the silver birch tree o'er me hang,
The chirping wren shall rear her callow young
Shall build her dwelling near.
And at the purple dawn of day,
The lark libell chant a pealing song above,
And the shrill quail shall pipe her Bong of love
When eve grows dim and grey.
The blackbird and the thrush,
The golden oriole shall tilt around,
And waken syith kmellow gust of sound
The forest's solemn hash.
Birds from the distant sea
Shall sometimes, hither flock on lowly wings,
And aoar above my dust in airy rings,
.Singing a dirge to me. t
The altar of freedom is sacred to both
the patriot and the Christian. Liberty is
a word full of meaning, and full of inspi
ration. It iniplies the richest blessings
that man, in his civil capacity, can en
joy, It inspires to deeds the most he
roic of which he is capable.
The onward progress of great events
gives consequence to the incidents con
nected with their commencement, cor ; , ,
responding with their magnitude. Hence
it is that we look at. Faneuil Hall, the
cradle of American liberty, with a vene
ration that deeply affects the patriotic
heart.
This superstructure was .erected 35
years before the declaration of American
Independence. On the 4th of July, 1740,
Mr, Peter Faneuil, of Boston, a distin
guished merchant, made an offer in a
town meeting, to build a market. house,
The town being without ono. By the
close vole of 337 to 336, a grant was
Made for its erection; and hence,•upon
this majority of one, hung the inamonali
ty, of the name of Faneuil. During the
following two years the superstructure
was erected; and as Mr. Faneuil gene.
musty went so far beyond his contract as
to add a spacious Town Hall in an up
per story, the population rewarded him
by unanimously resolving to call it after
the name of the liberal builder. The
next year after its completion, Mr. Fan
euil died ; and the first public meeting
held in the Hall, was to hear a funeral
oration on the occasion of his death.
It was in , this Hall that the seeds of
American freedom began to germinate ;
and from thence was the tree of liberty
transplanted, which has grown withsuch•
luxuriance in the American soil.—North.

RUM AND POYERTY.--,Last Saturday
I was distributing my tracts for the
month, and came upon one of the most
wretched cases of poverty'l have ever
'known.
In the third story of a house lfound
a woman without a'spark of lire or a
morsel of bread. On the hearth were a
few dried weeds for fuel, and these site

The furniture of the room consisted of
one chair, which she said, and probably

one or two old pails.

she was married. She opened a little

And yet this woman told me that her
father was an English Bishop, and she
now had a brother a minister in Phila

know her condition. Why? Because—
and here came the secret of more than
half the suffering in the .city--"it all

, seems, had a good business, and could
earn, as she said, from two to three del

had to starve. She was very anxious to
have me call and see him the next day,
which I.did, and fOund him quite an in
