Several persons were lately fined 40 abilluiß* |
a t the Manchester Borough court, fur not j
consuming the smoke of their sicara engine for- ,
nace. It appears, from icjkiil of the proceeding* j .
in the Manehuter (Guardian, that the tjo* •* i**n j
of the practicability of greatly diminishing, if nor ,
altogether extinguishing, ilus' evil,- was set at
real by the evidence of Mr. Henry Hooldssroith
ana Mr. Thomas Ogden. tjp chimney*,of whose
works have long echan example U> the District.— ,
Mr. HouUswortb staled, and. a* such mat- 1

that thameans eaaantial to an almost perfect r )«-
bQstioifof smoke, were by no means costly: that,
in ordinary casrs, they might t-e applied at a
coat of 10/ or IS/; and that the result, while it
secured all that could be desired, iu the removal
of the nuuiiuce, was in bin case attended with a j
saving in bis consumption of fuel of not l«* than ,
18 per cent. In the three year*. 1833—’40, bis j
consumption of c*al wa* one ton per hour; in 1
1841, the smoko consuming tpi status was udop
tad to hi* furnacc, aad in the ihrte following year* j
1842—44, his consumption of curl wa-* reduced j
lo 16 8-10 ent, per hour. j
The gcneraLaccuracy ol these statements. i.a
pugned by t Mr, Arostong, was confirmed by Mr. :
Falibaim, civil euginecr, who stated that two eim
‘ p|e element* only were needed to ensure the c m
aump'ina of smoke— a mifficientlf high tempers
tnre, and the admission to the turuaeu of a sulß
dentqoaotityof atmospherical. Some atteinpi
weft made.to contravene the 'Statements of Mi.
Hooldsworlh, on the ground that his experiment*,
made aaoetitno ago. were f|llacious; but it wa*
observed, that three year* of ;irac/ire and txprri
