A swcot smile and a warm welcome
made us feel completely at ease as
entered Cypress Collate, in tiic valley,
of tho Hot Springs
But what has all this to do with the
Hot Springs. Wjty, gentle reader, thu
truth is, as it took Some, time to get there,
you may as well travel gently with us,
while we give you a poncil sketch as we
journey on ; but if you are tired waiting,
just rise with me in the early morning,l
and at that balmy period of the year - !
when the rough winter’s blast lias yield
~d |o the sweet breath of spring; and
rise early enough to see the snow-white
mists wroathi'ng upwards along the adja
cent bluffs, tho flowering tree-lops just
visiblo above the snowy mantle, and
seeming like so many Naiads emerging
from,a sea of foam. A vapor may also
ho seen arising‘from the surfaco of the
creek which bathes the edge of the east-,
ern bluff, and which receives the steam- j
ine bat waters as they leap from above.
Speculation has exhausted llse|f, and
would-be geologists and wisu men have
invented a thousand theories to account
for the existence ol these remarkable
Springs. I do not pretend to offer a sol
itary opinion upon tho subject. Volcanic
agency may be tho resulting cause—and
indeed Urge musses of rock maybe seen,
composed of smaller pieces, alb conglom
erated together, and imbedded in a dark
er substance, which once seems to have,
been in a state of intense fusion. With
out quoting Fahrenheit, the temperature
of the Springs is sufficiently hot to svi.tl
the hand, and in one of the Springs
which we visited, a luckless: ,rog lay
cooked to death, having nu doqbt misia

Springs I'cannot state. There are, how

placed soias to conduct the waters into

At Mr ;Wbiningto»’s, three miles from
the Springs, is a latgS> “ nli b 9 IJ pH ,y '
bealte spring, the water of which runs
with' sufficient volume to turn a small
mill. This is a handsome arid romantic
place, ami may be considered an one of
those valds. in '.‘whose bosom the bright

But j rpust reservo a further account
