PORCELAIN
The'porcelain aIL comes from a single
town, King-tu-ching.; but thb conimon
stone and blue ware is made in diany
provinces. The people are exceedingly
fond of household ornamemst of porce
lain; some of „which are imported into
this cquntry. These a ? c sometimes ele
gant, but', more often, grotesque ; a i the
Chinese never tjmiiatd nature, always
preferring to malic something odd. The
common earthenware of the country is
very cheap; a whole,establishment for
ra family may be-bought for five or six
shillings.

The Chinese have a method* .un
known to US of making Icopner while by
means of alloys. In ihti manufacture of
gting* and hells, experience' has taught
them to mix the metal* iA abbul the same
proportion as wp do. the* iron uten

-cast. In gold and silvejr work they are
probably equal to any people ; and ill'
carring and chisel work they take the
lead in many respects. jGpld is ex
pensively used in China! and they also

make it in the same that we do.
