In connection with the above, the following
petition was road.:
We this undersigned Teachers or the'Pubile
of the

saladssalads increased to the amount specified 41 the
resolution paned at the mmUng of the Principals
held on the 4th Inst. (hlgoed by all the Tescheiv.)
The above petition was received and or
dered to be filed.
Mr. Begley, who represtruta the Fi ft h Ward
Local Board , being ebsent--frouitthe city, the
Directors of said ward presented - it unanimous
request that the salaries of the Teachers be
raised.
A similar request was presented from the
Directors .of the Third Ward, owing to the
ebsence of their representative, Mr. Duncan.
A general discussion hore followed upon
the question of an increase of salaries. A ma
jority of the Board faiored an increase, but
not in the proportion indicated in the petition
of the teachers. The greatest difficulty which
presented itself ripe, that the present rate
of school tax, (four mille,) was not sufficient to
warrant an increase the present eateries. It
was true, •that,: , during the past eightymars„

Oallie followingnight over one hundred armed
' linekshots niarthed into town,, well" armed, or
riving here about one o'clock in the morning,
surrounded the jail, and rescuedthe prisoner.
No effort was made by the Mitt-authorities
to arrest the.offenders, although 'the Grand
Jury, last recruth;. presented - the names of a
nureber of persons who partielpatid in the
outrage. .The Distilet Attorney, being of the

to bring these villaßut to justice. The High

ler doing his duty, lout he being in the Cop
perhead boat, cannot do so. He has made no
effort to raise a poser coesitarus for the arrest of
these or any other outlaws in oar county.
'Sven oho of the associate judges of our court,
and leading officer of one of the most prosper
ous and respectable local corporations, it is
said, discountenanced any effort to arrest
"Buckshot'," simply because they (the Dem
ocrats) "need their votes and Must not-offend
them."
•
Thus encouraged by our local authorities,
these outlaws frequently declared their deter
mination to not only kill every officer who
would undertake to enforce the draft, but also
to put out of the way every one suspected of
sympathy with the Government. They openly
declare now their determination to secure
entire control of all the mines, and to stop the
coal, and thus deprive the navy of this indis
pensable article.
The same correspondent gives the following
account of the mauler of Mr. G. H. Smith.
who had been suspected of giving some infer
nation concerning drafted men :
Mr. Smith, being indisposed, retired to bed
about nine o'clock, soon after which somebody
knockedat the door, which was opened by Mrs.
Smith, andan individualin 'claim's uniform
entered, aid said he had a letter for Mr.'
Smith fromMarich Chunk, on important busi
ness. Mrs. Smithproposed to hand it to him,
but the villain in soldier's clothes insisted
upon giving it to him personally, saying that
was his positive order. Mrs. Smith then re
tired to Mr. Smith's apartment. and informed
him of the very important lifter for him. Ile
soon entered the room, receiving what par
ported to be a letter, and stepped up to the
light to open Mid read It, when the villain
stepped up behind him and shot him through
the bead, killing.him inetautly. As soon as
the shot was fired, the door opened and a gang
of 'Bueltshot assassins rushed - in, and Mr.
Chick, clerk in Mr. Smith's store, who was
ales in the house, came in the room by way of
another door. He succeeded in killing one
Buckshot, but received himself a ball through
the thigh. Mrs. Smith received three bullet
holes through her dross, bet succeeded In
making her escape without injury. The dead
Irishman wm carried away by his fellow-ruf
tutus, and thus for none of the gang have been
identified.
