Capt. J. Heron Poster, Provost Marshal of
the 22& District, yesterday ordered the arrest
of a man named Milthail Gilkey, a resident of
the Pint ward, for resisting the enrollment.
Gilkey refused to give his nam e,age or plate
of residents to the stroller, Mr. James Gra
ny, whereupon that cattleman very properly
reported him to the Prevost Marshal, who
profaned charges against hlm and handed him
overt, the custody of the United States Mar
shal for trial. Tho penalty for resisting or
obstructing the enrollment Is a fine not ex
amen five hundred dollars, or Imprisonment
not mending two years. A few examples of
this idnd wilt have a very salutarpetreot here.
Brraourr.—A molt daring burglary was
perpetrated at the hum of Mr. Jonathan
• Hoobstatiar, near Mechanicsville, in Summit
township, Somerset county, on Tuesday night
of last week. Some time during the night
the house was entered by three men. Mr.
Hoebitetler slept down stairs, and hir•three
sons Dappled rooms above. On being awak
ened, he made some outcry, which aroused his
sons. A pistol was presented at head by
one of the burglars; a second rushed to the
stairs, knocking down the 'first son that ap
peared, sad afterwards holding all three of
them at bay la Vhe narrow stairway, with a
revelry, while the third rascal searched the
old man 's chest and drawer., and abstracted
therefrom about one thousand dollars in
yule. The burglars were disguised, wearing
bleat, crape or silk over their faces.
Navels' Esau' uou Du:tn.—Km Dr.
Stewart, of Greenville, Clariori county, nar
rowly escaped death one day list week. She
got into a Quoit to go to Kittanning, and
while the driver wee away from the coach the
hones started off at a run, dashing the back
against a bank, when ' fortunately, the con
pang broke and saved the coach from falling
over a steep embankment. The body of the
hack remained on the road with Mrs. Stewart
in it. The lady was horribly injured, one of
her cheek bones having been fractured, her
forehead cut, one of her eyes nearly being put
cut, and her person badly braised. It is
thought she will recover.

nounce the death of Mr. J. P. Ronal',
printer. from Waist received by falling
through a bridge on the Allegheny Valley
Railroad on Saturday.night. Deceased came
here from Washington, where ho learned his
trade as a minter, and has resided here for a
number of years. He was an smallest com
positor, and a genial; good natured =II, and
hi. friends will learn of his demise with deep
regret.

takes a benefit this evening, when she will
appear in the popnlar play of "Fa:talon,"
and "The Bonnie Bishilte." In the latter
plus she will sing "Caller Barring" and
"Annie f the Vale." She also dances the
"Butch Fling." This Ii a very attractive
bill, and the friends of the lady will doubt
lee compliment her with a foil hence.

session at Peoria, Ili., sleeted Rey. Dr. Asa
water, of Prineeton, to the anoint Professor
ship in the Western Theological . Seminary,
Allegheny city, occasioned by the resignation

and Instantly killed. Mr. Snider was very

The President raosived a dispatch from Gen.
Grant lam night, dated Vioksburg, June Bth,
in which was embraood a letter from General
Banks, dated the 4th inst. Communica
tion was opened, and is kept open between
the two chieftains, and, according to these
advioes, the lines of investment are drawing
closer and closer around the two rebel strong
holds in idiselasippL The two commanders
express the greatest conlidenee that Vista
burg and Port Hudson must fell, and that
soon. Everything was progressing at Vicks
burg on the Bth, and at Port Hudson on the
4th, as well as the most sanguine friends o 1
the government could wish. This last dis
patch, received by the government from Gat.
Grant, was the very latest, and came through
much quicker than any previous one from that
point.
HOBBY'S CAVALRY II MAITLAND.
Moeby'e Cavalry crossed the Potomac into
Maryland thin morning at daylight They
numbered about two hundred and fifty. They
attacked a compony of the Sixth Miehigan
Cavalry, drove them to-Poolesvillo, and then
returned and burnt their camp. Our lore was
four killed and oar wounded. They left one
Lieutenant and one private. The rebel, re
turned to the Virginia side without delay.
