The News from the Army*
Oar speolal correspondent at Philadelphia
sends ns a copy of an announcement in the
Washington Star, of last evening, which is as
yaga* u it is alarming. 7 -It speaks of the
crossing of the river aa before—Hooker above
and Sedgwick below, and leaves it to be in*
ferred that ‘Hookei met with a repulse or a
del eat, for it speaks of Lee*s ” victory."
News oomingin sach.strange and question

It is worth. ■ ‘ * *
••: A few hoars earlier we had intelligwicc,
'stated in the most confidant terms, that Gen.
Hooker had marohed his forces back to Chan*
osUoxTillo, re-occupied the old battle ground,
and found it deserted bj the Next
we had the report that General HaQeohihad
taken the field, not to take the command out
of General Hooker’s hands, bat to aid in con*
ducting the vast operations jrand then comes
this , last' obscure intimation of disaster,
which, if true, utterly falsifies the report that
Leo had rotired from the neighborhood of the
late battle ground at Chancellorvllle.
We can only attribute those contradictory
stories to the operators in gold and stocks,
and it is possible that this last report is of the
same oharactor. We shall hop© so until we
receive clearer and fuller statements, which
may bo received before we go to press. ’
But let the reader carefully oxamino this
terrible news, as given by &ar, and he
’ will perceive that it fi~nothing more than a
tumeiary history of Hooker's and Sedyvick’t
operations xehen they first crowed the river
week before lasi; and it may be true that Gen*
Hooker had just sent in his "official” report
of that expedition* We are free to say that
the longer we consider it, the more plausible
does this hypothesis appear. Still, it leaves
us in painful doubt, although thero is little in
the statement to entitle it to oredit.
The New Aoveneßi of Hooker’s
A Washington ipecial dispatch to the Phil*
ftdslphia Prut, dated on Ban day afternoon,
says:
I have made diligent inquiries in reply to
your dispatch, and state this as the result:
Persons have arrived here from the r Army o{
the Potomac, leaving there on Saturday even*

spirits, with everything in readiness to re*
cross the rivor. Scene ectpsorossed last even:

adopted by Ben. Hooker a few days a<o. It
is thought the whole army wilt move together.
Daring Wednesday and Tharsday General
Hooker detaUed. < several regiments to gathof

ilered continually, and the work prooeeded
without intermission. Tho numbor of rebels
found unburled was very large, and it is be
lieved that no effort was made by the enenj
to bury hie brave .men slaughtered by our ar
tillery daring the five days' battles at Oban*
cellorville. Fortunately, the weathor was
cool, preventing physical! deciy, and the rain
•orved as a balm to easo the wounded from
some of theiisoffoxing, Ihefact thatthe en
emy had left thus suddenly, confirmed Qsn.
Hooker in the belief that the rebels had
been very much cut'up,, and that they con
templated a retreat, if thatoourae was found
profitable. According lyy-on Tharsday af*
terhoon, before - the rain nhd oeased falling,
Qen. Hooker ordered forward across the river
the Ist and 6th eorpa d' armee, under General
Bedgwlok. Owing to the horrible condition
qf the roads, bat little progress was made,
and Gen. Hooker, on Yrlday, directed his at*
tention to the crossing of the whole army at
Banks 1 and Unified States* fords. Daring thp
day, positions for eaoh oorps were designated,
and Gen. Hooker was busy in giving In
'Stractions to hit various generals, coneerning 1
Ms proposed pursuit and capture of General
Xsrfauny.

Advices from ihe; Southern coast say that
the iron-olad fleet was ill off Charleston, ready
for another attack on rebsl stronghold,
and thls'has been repeated front so many dif

truth. The damage dose to the vessels was
all repaired almost immediately, and we had
expected to hear of a renewal oftbe attack
before this time, as it . was known to be the
