Renew of the Polish Qoestion.-Ew.
ropewn Complications. " \
Prom the latest it would appear
that Russia has’weU ni£h droned the em
pi re of disposable troops is to quell
the insurrection in Poland.- It,ia state*in
a letter from Berlin tie-only troops
remaining at heme are the first division of
Guards in Bt. Petersburg, and the sixth
corps of
and even this corps will, by the last ao
eounts, soon be busily engaged in suppressing
<s rising in the Pussian
ptars to be inminenti if it has Hot already
bnkas out. The fact that the Polish insur
rection has now continued to rage from
about the 20th of January to the middle of
April is Itself a proof that it ha« extended,
over a large part of the ancient kingdom
of Poland and Lithunia, although we hare
no distinct accounts of the progress of
•▼ents in Poland except in the provinces
which border on Austria and on Prussia.
The Russian armies collected in Poland at
the present. time must number 100,000
to 150,000 men at the very least, and saor
thing but an insurrection general in Us
oharaoter, and extending over a very wide
range of country could, hnve made head
for nearly three months against armies
so numerous and so abundantly supplied
with the test modern instruments and
munitions of war. In addition to the
contest along thefronllera of
and Prussia, theyqirmst be a great contest
raging in the nfrerhrf of which we have
scarcely any accounts. If it were not so;
the Russian army would long: since have
trodden out the resistance in the western
of Poland.
Among the rumors, connected with the
Bubjeot are the following: "It is reported
in St. Petersburg that Russia and Prussia
have contracted an alliance,' offensive and
defensive, in case England and France re
sort to hostilities. The Russian armaments
would appear to be directed against Sweden.
The Russian Ambassador at Stockholm has
peremptorily demanded explanations from
the Swedish government, some of whose re
cent acta have given umbrage to Russia.
The Ambassador requires to be satisfied re-'
garding the attitude, of Sweden upon the
PoUsh question, and threatens, in the oase
of not receiving a satisfactory reply, within
the twenty-four hours,-to demand hi* pass
ports. The people of Sweden arc taking a
deep interest in the Polish question. A
Stockholm .paper, however, eharges
Ministry with lukewarmness, and calls for
•nergetio action, in the interest of Sweden
herself. Russia is exceedingly indignant
at this bold attitude of the Swedes; and
probably it is she who has put forth the re-
E)rt that Sweden aims at the reconquest of
er lost provinces. Hence, too, the rumor
that the augmentation of the Russian, army
to a war footing was a measure directed
against Sweden."
Mon-Intercourse in Japan.
The hostility of the Japanese towards
foreigners has finally found offioial expres
sion. The Shanghai £teorder gives the
following, translation of an order issued
by the Mikado, or Emperor, repudiating
the treaties made with foreign nations by
the Tycoon, and directing the expulsion of
the “ugly barbarians
“For a long time the plan of expelling
the barbarians has been thought upon by
us, and although it has been put off to the
present time, the imperial will eannot
change. Whilst, department of the
Tycoon, changes have been gradually made
in every way in the carrying out of new
systems, we have remarked the respect
entertained for our will. But If now the
•ore expulsion of the barbarians does not
take plaoe, the hearts of the people will
not be united. This causes great sorrow
to the imperial bosom. Let the Tycoon do
all in his power to ensure the expulsion of
the barbarians; and orders must speedily
be given fcf all' the Daimios. Moreover, it
is the duty of the commander-in-chief, of
the army f tho Tycoon or the Shoongnzq.) to
eany out the stepß of thfe scheme. Quiekly
and with haste complete the whole resolve;
make certain what been deliberated
upon for the state up to the present; and
determine on the precise time when com
munications with the ugly barbarians shall
cease. You will present a-report to ns on
this matter."
This order confirms previous reports of
the determined attitude of the Japanese in
relation to intercourse with foreign
and destroys the hope of a free and lucra
tive trade with that country. By the'last
English mail also we have the particulars
of the destruction of the new buildings of
the British Legation at Teddo. / / ’
It appears that of late the strongest' de
sire has existed among the Japanese au
thorities at Teddo to have the place demol
ished. They propose ,to give CoL Hnle any
otter place he might choose from a num
ber at their disposal, and/to bear all the
expense of removing the' building from
the Gotem-yam* (the Hyde Park of Teddo)
to the place Col. Neale should select.' The I
letter did not like to act in the matter after |
the site had been deliberately conceded to I
Sir B. Alcock and.approved by him. Ini
the mean time - those hostile to' its remain-1
ing on the Gotem-yama had it set fire to I
and demolished by bags of gunpowder. I
