£lO Herald contains the following from the !
;*dqaarujrs of the Army of the Potomac, J
>ted April 28th, 1863 :
The expedition to the Northern Neck re*
burned last night.. The foroo was oomposed
of the Oneida, N. Y., Cavalry, Captain Mann,
and a detachment of the First Pennsylvania
Cavalry, under Lieut. Col. Gardener, and ar
rived in King Qeorge Coart House on 6asa{-
day night, where a halt was made for a few
hours. The expedition captured a number
of prisoners and some important letters found
in houses of seossslenists. The command re*
turned again, although narrowly escaping
oaptuxo. The rebels had fired the bridge over
the Mattox preek, and if our men had been
detained % few moments later, they would
h£ve been almost completely cut off.
Southern News,
Naw York, April 29. —Farther advices from
Port Boyal contain a report that the city of
Charleston will be again attacked on the Sd of
May, when the spring tides will reear.
All the Monitors except the Weehewken
had left Port BoyaL
The health of the troops was laffering some
what from the warmth of the weather.
Bebol deserters report that new obitraotlons
have been plaoed in Oharleeton harbor, which
will not aUuw the smallest oraft to pass.
Adviees from Newborn state that General
Hill's forooa were at Greenfield, and eren far*
ther north.•
Oar troops at Elisabeth City and Winfield
had been withdrawn to Washington and Ply*
month, and'are to be retained for the pare ore
of bailding a fort at the latter plaoe, whloh
will allow the withdrawal of one regiment,
whloh is now there, for operations elsewhere.
This evening's Pott oontaini a report, re
ceived by Way of New Orleans, that a Pay
master, with $600,000 for oar troops, was
aboard the steamer Fox when she was cap
tured by the rebels.
The Pott thinks that Gen. Banks has taken
possession of a large amount of rebel property,
and the news indtoatos that part of oar foroes
have reaohed Alexandria, La., where the
rebels had a large quantity ef stores end boats.
It Is not impossible, It says, that all have been
oaptured. •
From Murfreesboro.
Muaraxxsßoxo, April 29,—At noon to-day
a small foree of rebel cavalry appeared on the
Manohester pike, and the videttei gave the
alarm, saying that the enemy was advancing
In foroe. Gen. Negley, with eommendable
pradenoe, moved ont a short diitanoe, bat the
alarm proved to be false. Gen. Negley met
several eltisens, residents near the outposts,
moving in, who reported that the
declared they were ooming to drive the Fed
eral army from Murfreesboro. It is thought
generally that the demonstration of yester
day was made for theparpos«|>f forcing Bese
ems* to concentrate his linos, thus leaving
Wheeler and Van Dorn at liberty to aet on
the flanks with their cavalry;- also to enable
them, with the foroe north of Dnek river, to
defeat any attempt we might make iimilar,to
the one at MeMlnnvUle. At promt all ef
