let g* hei 4n©ior, ’it being dangerous to tale

Atithis moment, there was a temporary mis
understanding, and all the Iron-elads, except
the Weehawkia and Keokuk, gathered about
the Ironside, apparently thinking that they
needed assistance. They were, however, soon
signalled to go into action* The Keokuk had
kept pn until she led the line, and had ad
vanbid to within 400 yards of Sumter, against
whoik granite walls she hurled her heavy shot
with all the rapidity that the energy of her
bravd crew eonld furnish. The rebels, as
expected, immediately fire on
the Keokuk, which assumed to Mad in the
attack. From Sumter aud Moultrie, the bat-

the fire of 409 ergOO guns werp Concentrated
In terrible hail upon the' devoted vessel.
Saab » fire had perhaps aeverin the history
of thd world been equalled. It was met by

rate of onejorhvery second. Her guns were
worked fiQuVigor and precision, and their
weight and! Mo were making their mark
upon the walls./
It soon, however, became apparent thatithe
Keoktk had none of the impregnability of
Eriesdon's Monitors, and that, in fact, as an i
IrpU'cdad, she was a failure. The rebel balls
seemed to pehetrate her as easily as those of
a woogen vessel* The port holes, or shutters
of the ports, booame jammed, and her
gune praoticelly unserviceable.
; Poring the'thirty minutes she remained,
one hundred shot strnok her. Her flag was
shot Id to tatters, and the whole side battered;
bruised and pleroed. Perceiving the severe
inlands she had received, the Admiral signall

The Nantucket had her turret so jarred that
the cover of her port-hole could not be opened,

The IWOeac’s speoial correspondent says
the Ironsides was hit from 50. to M times
without material damage.! The enemy used
only shot of the heaviest calibre. The most
destructive of their missiles were of English
manufacture, prinolpaliy Whitworth’s steel
pointed projeottles. Eleven large holes, ap
parently running through the walls, some of
which were about three feet wide, were made
on the cast face of Fort Sumter, showing, that
our fire, was not altogether Ineffectual. The
monitors fired altogether about ISO rounds.
The .numerical weakness of the land foroe
rendered the direct 00-operatlon in the attack,'
impracticable . Upon the navy devolved the
