The Church | and Slavery.
Tbfcre is a natural laud irrepressible an*
tagonlsm between Christianity and Sla
very ; and however men of almost every
denomination, Catholic and Protestant,
have labored to reconcile them, all their
labor has been abortive, and resulted only
in shame and discomfiture. As well might
they attempt to reconcile God and Mam
mon, or get up a compromise between
Christ and. Belial. The timo was, and is
not long past, when powerful jecolesiastical
bodies attempted to apologiii for slavery,
; and even defended it, and from this charge
neither Trotestants nor Catholics can plead
exemption; but this infamous rebellion has
put an end to all that.' and delivered
the churches from that bondage.
, in the Cincinnati Catholic Telegraph we
find an able article on the sdbjcct of “The
Church and Slarery,” the spirit of which
we like, and from which we propose to take
a few extracts. The editor is combating
the JVsemon’s Journal, of New York, whioh
is still strongly prWsluTery, He eayaln
the outset: “The New York Reemm't
I Journal condemns our remarse, quotes SL
Paul and Churoh Councils, and says that
wo are ignorant of ecclesiastical history. 1
On the point in which Paul is quoted in
defense of Slarery, the remarks of the
TeUgngh are Tory good. It says:
“With respect to the ■ words of SU Paul,
so often quoted; we find a fall justification
of our position. He writes to’Philemon,
commending his faith and eharlty, and
says: ‘Wherefore, though I might hare
muoh confidence in Christ Jesus to com
mand thee that which is to the purpose, for
charity’s sake I rather beseech, thou being
suoh a one, as Paul the aged andnOw also
a prisoner of Jesus Christ; I beseech thee
for my son Oaesimus, whom I hare begot
ten in my chains—whom I hare cent back
to thee. And do thou receire him as my
bowels. * * Not now as a-serrant, but
instead of a serrant a most dear brother,
especially to me; but how much more to
thee, both in the flesh and m the good ? _
“Any one who can find anything in this
infaror ef Slarery, must hire piercing op
tics. Would St. Paul here sent him back
to a Heathen master—or one. who would
haTe the power and the will to despisohim
—to seU his wife asd children into Slay
ery. The thonght is not to be entertained
of the blessed apostle.
“If a fugitire slare in this country was
to bo sent book to some master’ in Missis
sippi or Teres by a Catholio Bishop of onr
days, beering snob an epiaUe ae the abore.
how wrald the master mock and the world
laugh at the Bishop ? What a joke it would
. be aOUßidered in the South?” :
This is. rery good, and is, wo think, a rery
sensible commentary upon this beautiful,
but much abused, passage. The editor re
marks in another place:
Without aorimony we can write on this
subject of slarery. It must bo discussed;
theft is no Kelp for it—and whilst we ao
eord to those who are-its adrocstes—all lib
erty of speech-—we hope that some'Uoeuse
will be extended to us, when wo giro our
reasons on the other side. It is not in a
factious Spirit or a fanatical spirit that we
write, but under the strong eouTietion that a
gnat change is at hand in the politieal wel
fare of the Country, and ihat it is of some
consequence to Cptholies to decide wisely
what part to take./ This cannot be done by
crying but “ignorauee,” “Abolition,’’ but
by friendly discussion. Whether wo like it
l or not; slarery is extinquished in the
United States,- and all that we hare to do,
is to decide how we shall accommodate oor
arirea “to coming events.','
.. Wa shaU-inafie ntt one men brief ex
tract, which aeoordrbxaeny mm our m
opinions:
We assure our cotemporary that we, too,
i hare ne desire to enter into a oontrerersy.
It would be useless new, beeanse the sub
ject of slarsry is. dead. The first cannon
find at Sumter Bounded its knell. It would
be' much easier to take Richmond or open
•the Miasisaippi, than restore slarery in the
United States. The; thing is gone forercr.
/ We art glad to see so inflnontial a paper
'as the-Tclegraph take sash decided ground
on this gnat question; for it is the best
possible eTidenoe it can giro of its loyally to
the government and the Union. Men may
pretend to be in farorof both slarery and the
Union, and they may persuade themselree
that the thing ia possible; but it is a delu
sion that is fast ranishing away. Liberty
and" Union arc compatible; but Slavery and
Union an natural anJ irreconcilable an
tagoniste. * I ;
