under Capt. L. S. Payne, of the 100th regi
ment, proceeded In the direction of Charles
ton to- day. Tho party proceeded with caution
and got an excellent view of some of the 1 rebel
corps and forts, end returned to this point at
night.
The Union gunboat Iraco Smith, recently
captured by the rebels la Stono river, was
taken by them tbrougb Waupan tfreok to
Charleston, where she has been iron-clad.
She is nearly ready for earvice,,and Is about
being sent hack to Stono to try to eaptnre
wooden bloekaders. The water In Wanpan
creek la at present too shallow for the Smith
to pats through, but tho rebels are now dredg

The rebels have been very busy of late is
CTMtiag now and improving old fortifications
in Stone Inlet. From Legarvillo to Waupan
crash there are no loss than ten earth batteries.
