.v W «!“. OI K A P ril I—Bupaloh.. from
t&e Mississippi squadron embrace reporta
from the oommanders of several vessels
which attempted to pan Port Uudion on thi
Sight of ihb 14th of March, from which it
appears that the/ had reached the last and
most formidable batteries, and werb congratu
lating themselves upon having gained tbe
turn In the river, when the Missiseippi
grounded. Fearful that this vessel, under the
galling fire of the enemy, would fall into
i their hands, it was deliberately destroyed by
the commander, after the removal of ail on
board. No private cffeols were caved. Tho
mishap to the Mississippi caused a derange*
ment of tho woli contrived programme of Ad- I
miral Farragut for the passage of all the ves- I
sels of the fleet. The fighting on the part of
our men U described as in tbe highest degree
creditable, all striving to exhibit superior
prowess.
The tchooher Jane Morley, formerly Le
Fonavril, of Baltimore, owned by Bokcg
Bsll k Co., arrived at the steamboat wharf
to day in tow of a lug having been engaged
in a contraband traffic, which finds its waybe
tween the rebels in Maryland and Virginia
aoross the Potomac, near the extremity of the
Peninsnla, between tho Potomac and tho Bap.
pahannook. *
The party of twenty-five contrabands, cap
tured on board, included sovcral ex-Washing
tonians of notoriety. 6
The contraband good* capturod make* a
very extensive pile on the wharf, and attracts
mooh attention, embracing a large amount of
jnppliet of quinine, morphine, eto., rebel
uniforms, buttons, infernal machines, of a
novel construction, army blanket*, forty cases
of boots and shoes, lueifisr matohes, soap and
coffee, and three large mail bags containing
small packages,:and some eighteen hundred
letters, to parties in Virginia, and North Car
olina.
The letters, it is said, are bf a character to
seriously compromiaevarious parties in this
oitj, and in Maryland, and the devekp
ment* of the underground operations of
the rebels they disclose will prove of material
service to the Government. A smoking-cap
dressing gown and slippers, gifts to Jeff
Davis from his lady admirers in Washington,
were among the articles. Also a head-dross
a brilliantly colored balmoral, and finely em
broidered handkerchiefs, (half a dosan,) gifts
to Mrs. Davis. The boxes are mostly con
signed to the care of Traet, Saol & Co., Eich
moad, but bear also oipher designations,
which, with lotter* taken, will eerve to show
the real parties concerned in tho trade.
