that while they were paying this excessive
rate, other parties in Pittsburgh were ship
ping goods at lower rates.

fenoe, represented that this was purely a ques
tion oflpw, and, in order to understand it, re
ference mast be had to tie tonnage tax law.
The tax imposed by the Charter of the Com
pagy was a harden upon the industrial In*
tefesU of the. country, and the Company, un
derstood the spirit ef the *ot removing Uxafe
tax to be that the bnrden should be removed
from Pjnnsytvaaia. The act of Marob, 1861,
has no reference to the products, of other
States, but U was intended to make the relief
: enure to the Pennsylvania manufacture., fit
farther stated that the Ceznpany understood
the act to mean that the harden was to be re
moved! from. the,. Industry of PennsylvanU,
and therefore; there Is a distinction betwnn
theiocaL and through- freight.’ Whatever is
-a' 1 prodoct of Pennsylvania is “local”

Distressing Caonalty-lnlant Burnt
to Death*
The house of Samnel Morrison, of Stewart
township, Fayette.oounty, was destroyed by
fire on Thursday last, and anlnfant perished

ehUdreifl, a little girl abodt fwo years old,
had fallen agalnst the stove and burnt its feee
badly. Mrs. M. had taken the child to, a

In her absence two older ohltdr'en discharged
a gun near tho bed, whioh set fire- to some
Clothes above it. - Alarmed at what they had
done they van oat of the house, oloting tho
door alter them, and when the mother reached
home, she found the room filled with flames
ahd the infant burnt up.
About a Irwin, a resident
of Allegheny, had a hearing to-day before U.
S. Commissioner Bailey; charged'with lifting,
a letter from Ute post office, whioh hadbeea
written by her ion (a soldier in the army) ic
his wife. Mrs. Irwin, the daughter-in-lair,:
was absent from the oity, and the Utter was
token out by one of the children—tt having
beta pieced in Mrs. Irwin's box. Dlstriot
Attorney Carnahan remarked that there was
