rable, but noneof them hate a truer, ring
than that of the. sterling old Democrat Mr.
WatOHT, of the Luxerne district. We love
such Democrats. Hear Mm:
, : I am an unflinching, unyielding, and un
conditional Union man. [Cheers.] There

[Applause—cries of “goodr-of course yon

tors. lam not one of those
for treason, and sympathise with life men
who are -now in open rebellion against the
Federal Union; - They are the enemies of
my country, and lam theirs. I hare been
an active Democrat now for a third of a
century .'lam a Democrat how, and will
oohtinuo bo daring' my 'life.; One of its
cherished principles, as 1 learned, was love,
of country, and obedience , to the Constitu
tion and laws—to maintain liberty, and if
needs be, fight for it.' [Dong oohtinued ap
plause.] lam one: ot those, 100, who be
lieve that , patriotism is above \ party, and
that it is the duty, of all loyal men new, ir-’
respective* of party names, to unite heart
and hahdj- body and soul, and pat down, at
the point ot the bayonet, the moatfoni, con
nipt, and causeless rebellion that the world
ever saw. The time Has not yet come, Mr.
President; when the loyal men of the North
have made up their minds te sit down with;
folded arms.and surrender their liberties.!
It may be the case with, demagogues, but'
not with the masses—it may be so . with
sympathising Secession traitors, but not
with patriots. Our liberties cost too muoh;
to be bo easily surrendered. Oar an
cestors were in es
tablishing the American j Union,* and
degenerated indeed are wf if we can
not'devote twice i that number of yjers
in''maintaining, and perpetuating it They
sealed it in a cove nan twlththcir heart's

with one Union; one Constitution, and'one

to the oOurage of the North as well as the

peace which Northern sympathisers with
Southern treason would have—a peace
whioh would destroy the last yeetigeand
hope of. human liberty- But, sir, how idle
and delusive id talk of peace while armed
rebellion is in the ascendant. The rebel
press say that “if the whole Yankee nation
nill lay themselves at oar feet, and; become
our slaves, we will, spurn them, from; us.
We ‘will reunite upon no terms, upon no
condition, with them. 11 The great leader of
this bogus, bastard confederacy, ia a
speech recently: delivered ;by him to
the Mississippi Legislature, wondered,
in utter amazement > “how they
could have any love or. regard for ; the
old Union, composed of the of
men from the bogsandfens of Ireland and
Scotland, oflow and. vulgar origin.. With
such vulgar creatures he would .never again
unite.* [Laughter.] With such senti
ments.from the rebel press and the great
unchained leader of rebel hordes, who! is
his senses at the North can talk of peace ?
The'evidences to my mind areithat the man
who does so is a traitor hinlfalf, wnd so 1
