THURSDAY MORNING, FEB. . 20.
Gei. Br.ou> Letter.
_ la sar dUpdbohta ©f-'yoaterdxy morning
we gate the letter of Gen. Scott to tho
Secretary of War, detailing the gross dis
respect} and disobedience at ■
lax, while that venerable and honored sol
dier still occupied the position of 'Com-
armies of the Union.
There is a time-honored aphorism in these
words; “He who knows not how to obey;
Is not fit to command, ” and never was its
truth more manifest than In the case of
Gen. MoClxllax. Oar special correspond
ent remarks, that the reading of that letter
fell like a among the democracy
• ' In Congress, and its effect .will be’the. same
throughout t^e country. Slowly but surely
" Is the trub dMfrieter of that idol of ail the
disloyal men of the North being revealed.
Had his heart been true to hisi conn try, he
might this day have been erowned with
Uarels as its hero and deliverer j bat he
ohoee his coarse and he has his reward.
The men who now fawn upon him would
darken his fame if he hod any.
A l)ose for Copperbeads*
In an ortiole commenting npon the
French proposal for an armistice, commis
sioners, negotiation and settlement, the
Richmond Enquirer lets off some strong ex
pressions, only a part of which we have
room for.
As for the : armistice, it is utterly
and sternly rejected for various reasons,
the ohief of whioh is that the Southnannot
atop to negotiate while the Federal armies
are npon their soil—“covering the greater
part of Tennessee, governing a part of Vir
ginia, beleaguring„ Vicksburg, crushing
Louisiana, garrisoning Pensacola, and ly
ing In ambush in Fort Pulaski and Fort
ress Monroe.” Then the JEoguirer is fearful
that France might require eorne conditions
regarding slavery that would knock, their
corner-stone oat of its place. . It says:
“ France would offer to bargain with tutor Euro
pean recognition of our independence on the terms
urgiTicg'up certain portion of the Bute* forming
the Confederacy, nod miking eorne Und of engage
moot concerning our domestic institutions,'which
might conciliate the canting and snivelling public
opinion of Europe. Neither one nor thd other of
these thioga hae our Government * right to do. No
proposal oi ouch a kind hia U the right to entertain.
Tke negotiation t t.uid noeteearilg Artak down, and of

The arrogance of those slaveholders is
absolutely immeasurable ; and with a de
gree of madness that is the sure precursor
of distraction,' they'fling a gross insult
into the faoa of the Entire Civilised world,
characterising a decent regard for the
rights of mankind os “canting and snivel
ling pnblio opinion.’! We think Napoleon,
when he reads this leader in Jxf?. Davis’s
organ, will draw baok and let tho rebels
take What they get.
Now hear how the editor talks of the
crawling reptiles of the Northwest, who
have been laboring to bring their States

The latest Vicksburg dales say the work
on Lake Frovidenoe was progressing. In
Bayou M&con a large amount of trees and

admitted into the lake from the river, and
allowed to flow into the lake before the

The steamer Sunshine had been up and
cleared a portion of Yazoo Pass to Moon
Lake, and beyond she found a small steam
er at the entrance of the pass, where it
joins Lako Coldwater, and had reason to
believe that the rebel gunboat was in the
vicinity and a force on land.
When the dispatch boat B. passed Cypress
Bend on Wednesday, no rebels in
sight. On tho contrary their battery 1 hod
again flown. A regiment or more of Union
troops in the vicinity were anxious to find
that battery. The B. expert© need no diffi
culties in making the passage.

Copperhcads--Origin of the Term*'
What it Means*
A correspondent of the Cincinnati Qa
'sett*, In anticipation' of curiosity of
future contributors to “Notes add Queries,"
thus writes from the vfcrjr place olaimed as
tho Y<ma et origct of this specimen of polit
ical neology:
Soon after the outbreak of the rebellion,
the Springfield (O.) published a
communication in'which the writer noticed
Urn rattlesnake os the emblem of ihe South
Carolina rebels, and stated that the rattle
snake was a more maghanlmohs reptiie
than the copperhead snake* as the former
gives notice- before he strikes, whild the
latter, besides being more insidious, strikes
you without giving you any warding; and
applied the term copperheadi to ail the trai
tors and sympathisers with the rebels in
, the free States. Other papers soon adopted
the term, and it has becomo vary general,
but some people do hot see .tho 'point; and
in Indiana 1 see some use the term copper
