A lay member presented a paper on. the
state of the eonntry, which was referred to a
select committee, consisting of ono from etch
of the • leva* denominations represented in the
Convention. (I erred in sty last in saying
there were only eight or nine denominations
represented.) The 'paper set forth slavery as
I one of the great cause*—if not the gnat cause
1 —of our national troubles, and recommended
the Insertion in the preamble to the Constitu
tion of the United States, of a recognition of
the beiug and attributes of Almighty God—

On Thursday afternoon ' the Rev. - Mr.
■ Courey,-of Springfield, occupied the ohair.
The Convention offered up special prayer in
behalf of the Rev. Gavin McMillan; an aged
father in the ministry, who was prevented
-from being, present on account of severe
, siekness. Subject of discussion this afternoon,
i “Religion In the Nation."
Tho committee to which was referred the
paper on the atate of-the country reported, re
commending the paper to the consideration of
the Convention, and to take action in agree
ablenats with its spirit. Special prayer was
offered np for divine direction in the

I ed to meet at 7‘o’clock in the evening.
I When the Convention re-assembled In the
I evening, the paper on the state of the eonntry
| waa taken up, after the usual devotional ex
| erelses. The Convention was unanimous In
their endorsement of the paper, but the ma
jority seemed to-question the expediency of
taking any action, at present, in relation to
the tubjeots whlob it embodied. The follow
ing resolutions were adopted as the mind of
the Assembly: ■

Nxw Yore, Feb. 9.—The gunboats Clrene- '
stan and Vyater Witch arrived last night from
Port Royal,—the latter for repairs. The
Circassian brings six offioers of the rebel
steamer Huntress, burned off Oharleiton on
January 7th. She was commanded by Cnpb
Bremond, formerly of the U. -B. navy. She,
tkd (wo passengers, J. M. Vernon, formerly
editor of the New Orleans Picayune, and Thos.
Steers, the prlnoipal owner ef the vesieb The
steamer and cargo was valued at slSO,ooo,an<T
