• Joseph Taylor, of Marshall county, 1 Va,
pegged on oathofHjj.Bsther Colwell, of
this cily, with bigamy, and committed last
veskto answer a farther honing before *tbo
Mayor, has been recommitted for a second,
hearing on Thursday next. After hie arrival
here he married a daughter of Mrs. Colwell,
and (t beingjaiserted that ho had left a wife
and child in Wheeling, bo , was arroeted
as stated. While he admits his asso
ciation with tho Wheeling lady, ho
denies that ho was married to her.
She reached the city to-day, bringiog her
child With bar, and'has bad a long interflow
with Taylor in tho eonnty jail. She says
I nothing in refereneo to her hiring been mar-
I ried, and the inference is that Taylor's state
(mentis true. The woman whom he claims as
Lids ••lawfully wedded” also visited him; and

Miss, Beatty f lews tier Father’s Be*
Bamnsl Beatty, father of Blisabeth Beatty,
thajonog woman now in prison on a eharge
of hilling her seducer, died at his residence
in the Seventh War<l; on Monday, in the
sixty-fourth yeer of hts age. The news of
his dsathi was eommuotcated to her, in ,tho
prison, by-her brother, and she immediately
j expressed a desire to tho jailor, to be permit-
I ted to see her father’* remains before inter-
I oietti ‘The request waslaid before the Coart,
and the Sheriff was permitted to gratify her
l it that respect. She was taken to her father’s
| residence on Tuesday morning, In company
with jailor Smalt and Deputy Sheriff Clnley,
and after viewing his remains was again ooo
( daetod to her cell in the eonnty jail. She
j boars op wonderfully, considering the trying
( circumstances in whieh she has been placed,
| and hes as yet exhibited no signs of regret
(or remorse.
Fire on Market Street,
• Between nine and ten o’clock, Tuesday (
morning, fire was discovered issuing from the
mar of the bnildlag located on the corner e!
Market and Fourth streets,'and occupied by
Mr. J. M. Burchfield as a dry goods store. 1
! The alarm was promptly raised, and the fire-
I men were soon on the ground. Tho fire caught
from a defective flue, and the building was
| damaged to the amount of about $5OO. The
| stock of goods, being mainly in the front of
| the building, was very slightly damaged with
| water, and not so as. to interfere in any way
] with the business ef the store. Tho loss is
I fully oorered by insurance.
Dauaqi bt Floodb in Ohio.— The late
heavy reins have caused the Tuscarawas river
to overflow- its banks,' doing considerable |
damage to fanoes and srops. The water has
broken through the canal bank at the Oldtowu
i Basin and at Canal Dover, and will be greatly
I damaged at various points. The oars on the
Tuscarawas Branch were unable to make con
nection with the main line at Bayard, on
j Tuesday,. in consequence of damage to the
( road. The Steubenville and Indiana road
( has also received oohsiderable damage at the
| crossing on the Muskingum, below Coshoc
ton, preventing trains from making connec
tions,
Tib Militia Erbollxxat.— >Mr. Murdoch,
U, 8. Marshal for tho Western District of j
Pennsylvania, has placedin the hands of Gov.
Curtin the aooounts of the officers who were
appointed to make the militia enrollment in
this District. The aooounts will be forwarded
by Got. Curtin to Washington oity for final
adjudication." The enrolling officers will
therefore understand that they need not ad
dress any further inquiries to the Marshal on
the subject. He will promptly advise thorn,
by letter or otherwise, of any information he
may xeoeive touching their accounts.
A Hafft Pair.—Charlesßoberts, a dashing
pimp, was committed to jail to-day, on two
charges—one for assault and battery, and the
other for surety of tho peeee, on oath of his
wife Minerva. The parties an both well
known to the police. -
Qby. Dwiobt Jaeyib, a resident of Massil
lon, Ohio, and well-known to many of our
eltiiena, died-omßanday last. He wee a most
•ueoessful lawyer, and had retired from the
practice of the profession with a large fortune.

Desperate Battle with Indiana in
Washington Territo y.

Salt Lack Citt, Feb. I.—On the morning
of the 29ih alt, Col. Conner had a four hours'
desperate fight with the Indians, on Bear
liver, In Washington Territory, in which 224
Indians were killed and many are supposed to
have been, drowned. lie took 175 horses, and
destroyed their lodges, provisions, &o. Oor
leas was 15 killed, Including 4 officers and 58
wounded.

Boston, Feb. 3—A delegation from Port
land, about one hundred in number, had *a
interview with Gen. MoOlellan last evening,
inviting him to visit that city. Gen. M Clel
lan expressed his thanks for the flattering
honor, and alluded with satisfaction to the
conservative feeling he saw in Now Eoglond,
and remarked that he saw in toil conservatism
the hope and strength of theUnlon. He prom
ised a written reply to the invitation.
A committeo from Concord also oalled upon
him. Gen. McClellan responded to the ad
dress that he felt highly honored at the invi
tation, and expressed great regret that he was
nnable to aocept it, having already exceeded
the time devoted to his visit to the Best.
He mrther said that he was preparing; a
I history of the peninsular campaign, to whioh
I he wished to devote the principal portion of
j his time. At some future period, however,
1 he hoped to meet his feUow-citixens of Coa-
