Before starting 1 heard several insinua tions that tbe guerrillas would resist our passage, but ,we being on an errand of mercy, | thought our mission would be re- and allowed to pass unmolested. No.evidences of danger waa seen until ap proaching Harpelh Shoals, we beheld the smoking hull of the steamer Charter, and severalburniog houses' on the south side of the liter. The steamer had been burned by the guerrillas under' the ; notorious Col Wade, and the houses by Lieut. Tan Dorn, of thejlst Ohio, in charge of the national gunboat Major Sidell . A short distance below was a large fleet of federal steamers engaged in getting onr the Shoals, under the protection of the gunboat Sidell On paesing Van Dorn's fieetrl hailed him, and inquired as to danger below.' He replied, “mere la no danger. I'have cleaned them out.” jWe passed on, the Trio a mile or so in advance. Near two miles below the gunboat, we taught sight of the Trio lying to in a oavo opposite the Shoals. Knowing that she was short or fuel, we ooneluded that she was engaged in taking on a sup ply ofwood. On nearing her we saw sev eral mounted soldiers' drawn up in line along Ute shore. As xnahy of them bad on Federal overcoats, we thought them to be our cavalry. They hailed da, and ordered os to land. ‘ I atjonee discovered them to be guerril las, and ordered Captain Robinson to land. The current being strong, the boat did not yield readily to the turn of the pilot, mak ing stow progress in swinging -around, causing her to drag slowly down stream. This caused the guerrillas to think that we were not going to land, and ; they immedi ately bred two heavy voileysof musketry, followed by two discharges of six-pound balls, jail taking effect on the steamer. Tour correspondent, in company with Captain Robinson, and Pilot Kilburn, of Covington, was standing on the hurricane deck when the firing took place. I hailed , them,] and told then to fire no more, as we were loaded with wounded, and would land as soon as possible. They tried to kill the man at the wheel, who stood bravely at his post, amidst all the fire, (until the boat was tied up. On our near approach to them, 1 hastehed down to a till the dreadful confu sion that the firing had caused. Several ladiei were on board, wnd, be it said to their praise, they behaved like’true heroines—no fainting or screaming—all is quiet as could b 4 desired under such circumstances. On my return to the front' of the boat, 1 was met by Col. Wade, who with a horrible oath, ordered Dr. Waterman, surgeon in charge of the wounded, to take his d—d wound ed Yankees ashore, as he would burn the bloat, and us too, unless: the order was obeyed. I instantly appealed to him in behalf of the wounded. 1 During this time his followers had come on board, and took full possession of every thing. Here I should like,.if.l could, to picture . out to your readers, and the world at large, the a>wlui scent of pillage and plunder that ensued. All but' two or three of them ’werddemormliied by the drink obtained previous to our arrival from the bar of the Trio. I will not attempt to pen-picture the scene, language fails, and words are beggars, in attempting to do so. Near one hundred of the thieving, plundering gang, was engaged in rifling every thing from the jolerk’s office to the chambermaid’s room. For a few moments the stoutest hearta were appalled, and consternation had seised upon aIL On passing around, appealing to them to desist,. I met their Assistant Adjutant General, In whom 1 re cognised an old acquaintance, who in stantly promised to do all in his power to save the boat, and stop the plundering. He epok6 to Colonel Wade, and he ordered themioff the boat; but alas, that overshad owing curse of both armies, was there, in full possession of human hearts, that might have 'been more humane, had not the demon •pirii of rum hardened their natural sym pathies, and unchained their baser pas sional In their maddened thirst for plun der, they trampled on and over our poor vounjded men, taking their rations, blank ets, overcoats, canteens, and even money out of their - pockets. Ntver was there such* Beene witnessed, For a time con fusion reigned supreme. Daring the time, Dr. Waterman and myself had oome to terms with Assistant" Adjutant General Burford, in regard to the passengers. The officers, able and disable, were to be pa roledjtogether with the wounded men, but he insisted upon burning the boat. We then uked him to epare one boat, and al low Us to go on to Clarksville. This he consented to do, upon my entering into a written agreement that the boat should htreaif ter carry no other supplied or do any Other work for the Government, other than Unitary wore. in i addition to this, the writer was to burn,! or have burned, one hundred and ,eleyeh bales of cotton that were upon the deok of the Hastings, upon oar arrival at Louiaville. The terms were severe, and ;Wadd would listen to no other; and on my failing to comply with these terms, the men mustibe put ashore, and left without cov- rations or medioine, badly wounded, and thirty-five miles from any military poet.; Military rule and the stern dic tates thereof may oondemn bur conclusion, yet the claims of suffering humanity, under such .circumiUnce*, would : compel us to gb further than the terms called for. The penalty for failing to burn the cotton on our arrival at Louisville was the simple surrender of unworthy self to the Confed erate authorities; a small penalty consid ering! the amount at stake. These terms bring agreed upon, and Burgeon Waterman having made up a Hat: of the paroled men, the guerrillas left the boat, ana the wound ed ef the Trio and her crew and passengers were transferred to the Hastings. While the transfer was going on, another steamer hove in sight—the Parthenla. on her way to Clarksville.
