half an Inch of one side of the Isrga fomaxal
artery, and probably in ten uiioutet more be
would have bled to death. It is supposed

part of the artery had slopped the bleeding
of the artery oa the battle- Held. Be that as H
may, the Burgeon on yesterday took up the ar
tery, and tied it in two places. The bleeding,
however, has redwood him *o that his life
hangs on a. thread.

Arrests on the Charge of Forgery.
Two men ware arrested In Philadelphia, on
•Monday, on the chargs of haring forged sev
eral Bank checks, one in that city, ooe in
Cleveland, Ohio, another in Pittsburgh, end
twa at Newark, N. J. The check which they
are alleged to tare forged Is Philadelphia
purported to have been drawn by a Now York
house, and wae cashed by Perea Jc Co., bro
kers, south Third xtreet. It, was for $863.

It purported to hare been drawn by Ed
ward Parsons A Co , on the Bank of the Re
publio at New. York. Tho money was ob
tained upon itat one of the banks in Cleve
land. .The forgery in PitUborgu was com
mitted during the present month. It was a
•heck for $5,984 16, which was cashed at the
Merchants and Manufacturers' Bank of this
city. Three thousand dollars only of tho
sumosnt was drawn, and the balance was di
rected to be sent to Philadelphia throegh
Adams’ Express. As toon as * the forgery
was dUeorared here, the Chief of Polieo
Hague, cf this city, was seat on there to ar
rest the party that should call for the package
at the Express offlte. On Monday the pack
age was called for, and the man was taken
lute custody by officers Hague and Hender
son. The other man, alleged to hard been
eoneerned In the forgeries, was afterwords ar
rested by an ©fleer. The accused were held
rura hearing yesterday. Prom tho person of
one of was obtained, and $2lOO
from the other. Letters from prominent elt
;lseni of Philadelphia were found ia their
possession, -which It Is supposed were ob
tatssd with a view to forging the signatures.
