The official report of the foandering of the
Monitor thowi that her lot* was attributable
to the springing of a large leak about the line
wbeie the armor joined on to the hull, caused
by the weight of the armor and the strain.
Thli was produced on the woodwork during
a violent pitching of the vessel in a heavy sea,
| when she ipse on the swell, and the flat nnder
I the surface of the projecting armor, came'
I down with greatforoc on the water, ceasing a
shock to the vessel and turret, and, as suppos
ed, increasing the leak. The pump* were en-.
tirely powerless to keep the water down in
the hold, and it was neoesiary to transfer the
crew te the ship which had the Monitor in
tow, as the wares were dashing over the
| whole deck. This transfer was extremely
| heserdoas, and it was while attending it that
[ most of those who were lost perished. The
I whole official report tends, to make it clearer
than ever bsfore that the Monitor was wholly

Some , Plain Talk by ja Kentucky
Slaveholder.
TheiCincinnau Gasttu contains a long
letter from Col. Leonidas ] MetcaU, Com
manding one of the Kentucky regiments;
Be is a slaveholder himself,; but 'despises
that class of Kentuckians who have no
anxiety for anything except “niggers.”
The following is tho concluding portion of
this letter:
“We have got o lr-eyes open at last. We
see that they aro too costly a luxury. Al
ready a thpusand millions has been spent
by each side, andla'tbohsand millions will
not pay the destruction, which is a thou
sand dollaraa head for every slaveowner
in the whole U uited States. And,- more
awful yet four hundred thousand of our
ownj nee have been slaughtered or died of
disease in this j unrighteous war. Our
Congress has sped a great part of its time
since we have been a nation, in wrang
ling over that question, itas not time a
bnndantly proven that we Cannot have it
-and peace too ? The overbearing tendency
instilled into ns by the usages of the in*
stitntion banishes the veryidea of liberty,
peace and progress. Instehdiof its being,
-00(1,8 Institution, it is His rod of punish
ment—a thorn a festering sting. [Now id
the time to rid the world .of this[ bane of
peace.' Let us not fasten upori the inno
: eCrit unborn this - fruitful theme of injuß
tlce, strife and murder. Leave not a ves?
tlgeof' the curse. The lrhell of slavery
was hung in £he boomof ihe deep-toned
cannon intended for the ! destruction of
Fori Sumter; but like the boomerang in
the' hands of an unskillfdl! thrower, re
bounds' with' a killing blow. The blow
reverberates and spreads until all Chris-
tendom heeds the warning.!
The name of Lincoln and universal liber
ty, will forever. be as closely allied; as the
name of Christ and Christianity, and will
go hand to hand- with the Throne of grace.”
