A force of rebel cavalry, numbering 1,500
to 2,000 men, with a battery of four Buries
under the command of Gene. Stuart land Wade
Hampton, paid our town what they are pleas
ed to call "a flying visit" on Friday night
last.. It is said a dispatch was resolved at
the telegraph office st 8 o'clock in the after
noon of the intended raid, but for some &pre
rently inexcusable reason was not made pub
lic, and our people remained is utter igno
rance of the matter until evening, when a mea
tenger came with the unwelcome intelligence
that "the rebels were coming." An excited
crowd of citizens gathered around'him, in
quiring of the whereabouts of the enemy, their
numbers and purposes, and although no one
could pretend to doubt the veracity of the gen
tleman who brought these startling tidings
when be told them that he had seen the rebel
advance enter St. Thome', seven miles from
this place, where they bad taken down a
Union flag, that they pursued him for several
miles and were then only a short distance from
town, many shook their heads dubiously, be
lieving the thing impossible.
There wasan immediatecallto arm—a hasty
intershange of opinion—a hurrying to and
fro, vome with muskets, and others anxiously
asking where arms might be had, the night
being vary dark and rainy at the time. Witicj
the exception of the "Phil Ream: Infantry,"
numbering about fifty men, before oar citizens
had time to form thurrelvet into any OW of
organisation, the rebels were upon as, I de
tachment having entered under a flag of truce
to demand a surrender of the piece within
thirty minutes. They ware met by the Phil.
Kearneys under the temporary command of
Capt. Ryster, of the• 12th Pennsylvania Re
eerves, who was on a visit to this place. He
commanded them to halt, and would have
clown fight with his little band had not the
°floor in command of the flag replied,"We
are a flag of truce and demand a mareder of
the town." Capt. Eyetcr told them to "Go
to 11-1 I" About this time Capt. Jeffries ar
rived on the ground, who, discovering the
state of affairs, conveyed the Log to the, Pro
vost bfarehal's office.
' A- parley now ensued for about twenty, min
utem, during which our anima witnessed the
spectacle of a small squad of rebel soldiery,
the advance of a larger force, in the very heart
of their goodly borough, demanding its mar
render ; and they could scarcely believe; their
eyes that here, thirty Win from the Potetnac,
along which lies the army whosirduty ft Will
to guard and protect the Border, and, ooloo
mended by the General whom, friends claim as
"the right man in the right place," should
I be the scene of one of the most daring raids
in the history of the present struggle.. The
half hour having nearly expired, Massra.
Xiamen, McClure and Kennedy, as a,Core
-1 mimes on behalf of the town, proceeded with
the flat to Gen. Hampton's headquarters, to
ascertain the numbers of the enemy, If possi
ble, and, should it prove coo heavy for resist
ance, to treat for term. It was agreed that
the town should be surrendered on condition
that tho rights of personal liberty should be
respected, that there should be no wanton de
struction of private property, the enemy stip
ulating for hones, hats, shoes, and such arti
cles es might be useful to them, and agroeing
that the soldiery should be excluded from the
heates of citizens.
The terms arranged, the enemy marched in
and took possession. It was a sad spectacle
to see rebel soldiers on every onset and
street-corner, or galloping through every
al oy, breaking open and entering the Stables
of our citizens and taking ant their best
he rasa. Our CllllOlll generally retired to
their houses about 11 o'clock ; but good order
reigned throughout the night, the rebels prid
ing themselves OD their good behavior. Gen.
Stuart asked one of oar citizens if they were
as bad as they had been represented, and was
told that the devil war never as black as he
WSJ painted. , Another eitisen asked a rebel
soldier how it came they were better dressed
than Mils infantry, when the latter replied
that they were jut now one visit and had on
their Sunday clothing.
On the whole we may congratulate our
selves on haring eeeaped so easily, though
with the loss of many horses. Before leaving
the town, on Saturday morning, they fired
the warehouses of Meagan. Wunderlich, Need
& Co., whore immense quantities of ammuni
tion, erica, and other government property,
were stored, as well as the workaheps, loco '
motive and depot houses belonging to the
Cumberland Valley Railroad. These build
ings were entirely consumed, the Company
losing their books and all their papers, and
not even the wails of the new brick warehotue
of Wunderlich, Need .k Co., were left stand
ing, the explosion occasioned by the 'hot and
abet! having entirely demolished the braid
ing. Three locomotives wore burnt, and three
cars loaded with army clothing, which were
run into the town about the time the deg of
truce came in, and might have been. rave*
with proper management, were rifled of th. ir
own eoatents and then destroyed. The loss
to the Railroad Company, and of Messrs.
Wunderlich, Need & Co., was heavy, that of
the. Company alone am outing to more than
8225,000.,
The enemy left about. 9 o'clock a. in., tak
ing the road in the direction of - Gettyaburg.
If they are not taken or intercepted, we know
where the blame will rest. This is now the
third raid in the rear of our army ; the first
being that of West Point, when oar forces lay
before Richmond, and the teoond on Catlett's
station, behind Pope; and the people demand
that this shall be the lest one. If it be true;
as is now reported, that they are spin acre,.
the Potomac, the disgrace of permitting this
email of rebel- cavalry to go back into
Virginia, would be greaser even than the re
proach of allowing them to some this way, in
the first instance, within eight of a whole di

'WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCT. 15
A Little Picture of teelEud . til Bebe.
A correspondent of !he New York Mao,
writing from Now Weans, gives the follow
ing lively sketch - of- rebels returning to loy
alty :
THI *OOll TO TAXI TEI OATH.
The days of grace began to draw to a close;
hut three were left, and It was evident that
many in the oily heretofore indifferent be can
to reflectorget badly scared, for the Provost.
Marshal General's office, heretofore compara
tively, deserted, : suddenly grew popular, and
a demand was finally created for deputies in
all the different Wards of the city. To the'
City Ball the crowd most determinedly -wea
ded Its way. It wee pleasant for fashion
to be waited on by the highest funelionaries
to the ante-ehambers of Gov. Bkepley's room,.
and COL Pamela office coon overarmed, and
the wide deers of the Lyceum, in which the
ordinance of secession was passed, were
thrown open, and the line ball with It, ac
companiments of stage, desks and arcs -chairs,
were devoted, its a sort of poatioal justice, to
the noble work Of restoring men and_ women
to their allegiance to the Union.
The promisouous crowd was a study surely,
for never. before in New Orleans had its incon
gruous social materials so thoroughly come in
contact—the rich and the poor, the belle and
the half-starved seamstress, the working man
and the the dowager with her queenly
daughters, and the shrinking women who
toil for a lisle& the Swarthy. creole, the. pale
New Englander, and the paler faced octoroon
—there - they stood, anxious, after their long
_rellection,to.nntwardly accept the rule of the
Government aides - which they ware born, and
all, most likely, destitute of the slighteSt pa
triotic sentiment, having no feeling indeed
bat the ditatacquiescence that follows admit
ted impotent Opposition toe weer that could
not be escaped. It was 'evident that many
took the oath under a degree , of excitement
that wotdd be hard to understand by persons
who have not lived In Now Orleans. /t was
a bitter draught swallow that oath, peril°.
blarly by a women;_many externally 4auti
ful, who had rendered themselves locally fam
ous kir:Ahair denunciitiOn of the National
Government, and by their - openly expressed
contempt for the National soldiers. It was
no email sensation to die _young girl ot.six
teen, who had:oftentimes arrogantly swung
her crinoline aside, as if thepossible touch of
a National officer was contagious. It was no
plessantpoaltion for such a young lady, after
all bar protests and vehement declarations of
eternal hate, to stand up on the LyeetimStage,
and before • thousand people, hold up- her
small jeweled hand, and pale with coalition
and indignation, swear to support the Consti
tution her father, and probably her brother
and cousin, had nen teaching her for years to
nand deepieis. Nor did many; gentle
'am annuls the responsibility -
,many
of Whom'even a few days, perhaps only a few
boors previously, had been exceedingly noisy
in their demur/citations of , Gen. Butler, and
voeifertiusly insane In their anconeeementa of
what they 'scald do rather than be "thus dlr.
graced.",
But in - spite of protects and wry faces the
work went on, and many seemed better, and
none worse for 'the ordeal. One young Mho,
as she passed out of the Hall,,obserted to her
friend, ".Well, really it ain'amuch, after all,
is it, ClOtile r One. tall lady in black—a
widow, I presume—of rather the tragialiteen
style, descended the marble steps, staring
most earnestly on the colitents of the twill
este. She seemed as If she would annihilate
it with her gase. I suspect ,she has lost a
husband on the battle-fields of the Pototnao.
Bite zniut, po property In New-Orleans.
Her struggle to save her wealth from confis
cation, and her hats for the Government that
had, as she - supposed, robed her -in weeds,
made, most likely, the letters on that "certifl
cats" burn her eyes as lire. As a contrast to
this, another widow cam, and tripped away
with the flippant remark to her companion,
"Upon my word, this affair has caused me
more emotion than when I stood up to !
