The Address.
The address of the National Union State
Committee upon the astounding issue pre
sented by the Breckinridgo Democracy, fte
embodied in Hughes' resolution, which we
publish today, is a sound and able doco
went. It puts the question as we put it
simply as one between Union and Seces
sion, Loyalty and Treason. It is on this
Issue that parties will really divide this
fall. There is no escape from this &Darns
. Men may delude themselves with the
notion that they arb voting a Democratic
ticket; but there ks no Democratic ticket in
the field, unless democracy and treason are
convertible terms. It is idle for any man
,viho follows the lewd of Messrs. Hughes,
Sleeltei, Darr, Hamilton, or anybody who
belongs to that fraternity, to pretend to be
a loyal men. ,As well might a volunteer
in the service of JefL Davis profess to be
loyal to tbo flag of the Union. . • •

- Isi order to prove the treasonable purposes
of the leaders of the party of which Mr.
nghes is the representative; it is only ne
cessary to state that nearly all their acts
and words from January. and February;
1861,,d0wn to the present time, hero been
so many proofs of their conviction of the
justice of the views contained alike in the
resolution adopted at National Hail, Phila
delphia, in January,lB6l, and in that pre
pared and purposed to be offered by Mr.
Hughes to a Democratic State Convention
is of the same year. They may
not, in express terms, have endorsed the
suggestion to drag Pennsylvania out of the
Union, but in nearly every county conven
tion they adopted resolutions and proclaite
ed sentiments, the object and effector' which
were to embarrats the General Administra
tion, which is always the embodiment of
the Government, and never more so than
in these dark and trying hours; and no
,to
prepare the way for that devastation and
ruin which mtuaresult from the separation
of the Republic, so earnestly desired both
by the armed and unarmed foes of our com
mon country.
Regarding, therefore, the resolution now
admitted and Affirmed by the Chairman of
the Breckluidge State Convention u the
real platform of the Breckinridgeleaders,
it is our right and our duty to discuss its
remedies for our national difficulties. This
resolution offers to Pennsylvania no in
ducement to remain with the freeiStates„
but attempts to bribo her to join the re
volting and sLaveholding Confederacy.. it
contains few words that appeal to the Im
mortal memories which have sauctitiedthe
Union to the hearts of all our people, but
it designs to present strong commercial and
sectional, and disloyal reasons, as so many
temptations leeway surpeople from their he
reditary and religious patriotism. We are
told in this resolution'of the Chairman of the
Breckinridge State Comb:Linea, that in the
event of a separation, Pennsylvania "must
either take her place in--some - northern
fragment of a once glorious Union, and
rest content to be shorn of a greater part
of her manufacturing industry, and of;her
export and import trade." • • -• " •
"or she may, if a member of the new Con
federacy, become the great manufactining
workshop fora people now consuming, an
nually three hundred millions' worth of
products and manufactures from, and
imported through the Northern States;
her cities become the great com
mercial' depots and distributing points
for this Confederacy, and her wealth, popu
lation and glory be promoted in a degree
unparalleled in the history and prosperity
of any people." And then Mr. Hughes, the
chairman of the Breckinridge State Com
mittee, says "that it will be the rightand
duty of her citizens" (that Is , the people
of Pennsylvania) "to consult their own ,
best interests in a position so momentous,
and decide between the LAWFUL ALTER
NATIVES."
•
Loyal men of Pennsylvania, these alter
natives are now presented to you; it is (or
you to decide at the election, on the 14th of
October, whether you will go for the old
Union and the old Constitution, or whether
you will accept the bribe'.offered."by the
sympathizers with Secession, and commit
your destiny to the infamous experimenter
a elaveholding Confederacy. This great
issue has not been presented by the Na
tional Union Committee, but by the repre
sentative of the opposition to the Adminis
tration. and the war. We submit to our
fellow-citizens,' and trust their verdict at
the ballot-boxes will show that they are
tot unmindful of this pregnant and sag
gestive admonition.

What Would Come of Separation
The Londbn Morning Star discusses the

of the Uniod with the following vaticina.
tion:
Washington is the centre of a continent
:—.Richmond would be bat the capital of a
second rate republic. The greater com
monwealth, with he ever increaaing popu
lation, would dwarf its "unwholeroome
brother. The world mould continue to re-
gard the states north of the.rotornac and the
Ohio as the transatlantic home of the Angle
Saxon race, while the elates south of that
line would either shrink by comparison
into politital insignificance, or provoke
mingled alarm and abhorrence by their
lawless devotion to aggressive yam and
piratical commerce. Such a revenue,' of
races and of communities would be indefi
nitely more to the disadvantage of the
South than of the North. We believe that
the disadvantage is perfectly foreseen, and
