TUESDAY MORNING, SEPT.; The Fate ol,Baltimoie; =ME= I MEN. BUELL'S ARMY. LETTER FR I.f the Pittsburgh Gazette. wenn!, Tenn., Sept. 2, 1862 Oarrempoadence NA. r The ev on 'of the position at Battle Creek and th • retreat to the mountains was not effected ithotit a slight shelling-by the rebels of the r r guard left at that point. It appears from U I can gather that Gen. peen ordered the 3 3d Ohio and two batteries Of ar tillery to garrison the fort built by McCook at the mouth of f rattle Creek, but that after ex amining the rt he called it a slaughtit pen, and ordered.the artillery away, but forg t the infantry. The 33d Ohio, Lieut. Col. Moore commanding, was left as i garrison, wi h or ders to IL.td the position as long as I was possible to do so. Buell, it Is said, told Cal. Harris, the commandant of the post, that he would be shelled out In alay or two, and left it. to the ditcretien of Barris as to when be should grow sick of the shelling and evacuate. Barrie atopd it for fifteen hours and. then withdrew. • This fort was bait by Can. Alex. McDowell McCook, whom generalship in this war has been shown chiefly by persecuting army cor respondents and returning negroes, after hay- ing indulged in cowhiding them. This latter feat was accomplished by him at Columbia in March last. .Bitt the fort he built at Battle Creek should remain a tasting monument of his skill as an engineerand general. For the Credit of the engineer torpeof the army, I ought to state that-. Alex. •MeCook Is about the 76th Infantry Captain, and: not anlengl. neer. On the• eve of orientating his position at Battle .Creek, McCeek, .consultingl with Buell, advised the ger/Honing of this !Mt by the 834 Ohio Infantry and the 9bio battery of Capt. Edgerton and the Pennsylvania battery et Capt. Mueller. This was done. McCook Moved, bat found Hardee in his front andhad to fall back to Battle i.Oreet again. IBuell rushed to Battle Creek in a hurry and ordered McCook to the mountains by another road. He then examined the fert and ordered Capra. Mueller and Edgerton, to evacuate instantly, and retreat across the Mountains to Dechon, which they did.. Buell , raved and stormed a little and pronounced McCook's' fort (which he called lon hicCoult,) a slaughter pen, and thus the infantry, for some mysterious pur pose, wee left alone, with the consoling :inter 'nation from Buell that in a day or two they would be shelled out. The shelling began about 11 o'cimk on Wednesday, the 27th of August, a d eon tinned with unabated fury until PM Morn ing of the 28th, whin the rebels 'found that the Thirty-third hid withdrawn. .They threwnver 600 shells troth 24 and 12-pounders. One LIME,W/MI killed and two wounded. The men lost :nearly everything they had, and their tents and baggage was abandoned. The rebels marched in.noxt 'homing and todk pos session, feasting for a dill or two on sauces goods, and then marched towards Stevenson, when, it: Is rumored, they !Ave arrived and taken possession. I he've no particulars. I understand that Gen. Negley has :aban doned his position at Columbia, and baying eolleeted'his brigade together, has marched to Murfreesboro, where 'there is some Mane of getting ' in the approaching battle; for one is rapidly 'approaching which will decide one of the most linportant istues of the war—whether the rebels or oursalres shall have both Middle and East Tennessee. t have full conddenoe that in a very abort time Emit Tennessee will be ours. , There arc ci:mbtnations and con - Oentrations here which I cannot mention, and which pronitse us victory. It la Mineral that GOCI. Forrest hoe been eaptuteditAlisaandria a little town south. of Lebanon; In' . this State. Three columns moved against him from McMinnville; blur ' Dumber° and Lebanon. , and earroundieg him succeeded in forcing him to surrender. His whole force is mid to be in onvhands. I fear the story Is exaggerated, If there is any foun dation for truth in it: A day or two will toll he taste in the ease, however. Scura.
