From the Army near Washlugon.
We are permi t ted to make the followi g ex
tracts from a-private letter written by gen
-1
I Haman of intelligence to a member •Jf his
i family. Ii will be read with interest y all:
VirssitiNarea, Sept. 1, 1862,
Dean—:—l returned about one hour
.."
ago'from Bull Run, where ‘l . have been look
ing after and endeavoring to assist oar
wounded. I have walked, - since thbs time last
evening, thirty-five miles—in from the neigh:
borhood of the battle-field, and encamped on.
the ground, soldier fashion, last night, at
Fairfax Station. I was wet to the skin by
the most violent shower we have had since I
have been here—but having rubbed queen
thoroughly with Bay Rum and put on dry
clothes and my wrapper and slippers, feel
mighty good. As you may imagine I atorlot
in a humor for much letter writing, or much
of anything else excepting sleep. There are
some things, however, of which I feel bound
to write immediately—to relieve, so fat ac I
can, the anxiety of friends of those engaged
in the late most bloody and fearful battles,
The Pittsburgh Rifles had five wounded—
Jas. Collard, eye ; E. Eangdon, seriously ;E.
Friths:, not eeriously ; E. Torrens, not seri
easily ; W. Seandret, not 'seriously. The
balance are all cafe, I know, excepting Lieut.
Bessemer whose Where shouts I know not, nor
does hie company ; but it Is yet hoped that he
may turn up. The first man I met, almost, at
Cestravillo, was Sergeant Craig, w ho alarmed
me by saying that up to that time, (Sunday
morning five o'clock) but fifteen of the com
pany (Pittsburgh Rides) had been uustered;
but I had the pleasure in the evening of that
day of seeing 32 men in line all of that com
pany. I took by the hand Captain Oweton,
(by the way a brays and gallant officer) Will.
McClurg, Ed. Darlington, Andy Morrison,
and many others of my old friends in the
company, who are all looking well and able to
meet Secesh any time—and with - anything like
a fairehow to meet him Suceeesfully. ,Teltall
yoUr friends in, Pittsburgh they can,

on the "old Pennsylvania 'Rosarys's," 'is I
have the testimony of - at least 50 wounded of
those who fought beside them on the left
wing, that they fought like heroes - as they
always have fought from Dreinesvie to 801 l
Run Ne. 2. What I tell you in regard to the
number of the Pittsburgh Rifles, gathered to
gether In the 24 hours after the battle, 1 esti
say holds good of almost all the „companies
istri regiments, as I know from my own ob.,
servationand when you hear persons say a
regiment Wall Cat to pieces, and , have but fifty'
or one hundred men—don't he In a harfy to
believe it, as time will bring in many Who
have been detached, and lost their coinpanies
andregiments in- the march from the front: If
any one tells you the Army of Virginia is de
moralised and not in a position to meet the
enemy again—tell them I know it to be false,
from actual observation, and tell' them for
their encouragement, that on my walk from
Centreville, I met not less than from 50,000 to
60,000 trestireinforcements on the way to the
scene of the late eonflictrith at least 125'
or 150 pieces of artillery- , -and these men
not green troops, but the Peninsula
veterans of Sumner, Franklin, ,- &c.—
From all I have • seen 'in the last
few days I have concluded that I can exalt
the conflict of .Centreville (where the next
battle is expected) with confidence as • to the
result. I am encouraged, and not at all dis
heartened, as many seem 'disposed to be.
I just missed seeing Colonel Bays, who is
anions the wounded—having been shot in the
leg during the nation, I believe, of Saturday.
I met a squad of his wounded, belonging, I
think, toe 51eKeesport touipany, attached to
his regiment, who declare that Gad never
made a brailer man than Alex. Maya, of the
devoted 63d Pennsylvania, and I believe it.
I saw Col. Leasure, of -the 100th Pennsyl
vania, who was slightly
,wounded in - the calf
of the leg. He hopes to be able to return to
the brigade he commands before many weeks.
For the present his wcrind is so painful as_to
prevent htur either riding - on' hersebatklor
walking, otherwise he would Malan with his
brigade,_ as I assure yeti it is a great trial to
him to be obliged to leave them - at so critical
• time as this.- S.
No Sacrifice is too Great to-Save the
Country
Mr. FOINKT, in a letter to the Peen, dated
September 2d, uses the follow i ng emphatio
langtu9te:.
As
,I have said, our polity hereafter must be
a policy of concentration and . power. It le
not so much that we occupy towns_ and street
holds—we must annihilate the rebel army.
and utterly destroy every source or its
trength and perpetuity. Richmond le noth
ing to us in comparison. Norfolk and Nash.‘
vim, are mere collections of houref',' which
have no advantage beyond -a cOlection -of
houses in Massachusetts and Missouri.' In
taking Richmond we must uttvrly destroy the
rebel force—end then, Richmond is taken.
Let us adopt the Roman. sentiment—"where
there is solitude, there is peace"—lot us make
our war a war ofdestruetionandtitermination.
Plating the Republic abOve oOns ider

sued, and barren lands,'•villages desolated;
and every evidence of .prosperity destroyed ;
let every negro be emancipated; let the whole
South bo a desert, but. let the Republic he
preserved. , These new disasters only inten
sify this fearful prayer in the heart of every,
loyal man. Lot 44 confen that this war is
nothing feu than'a war for aspire . . This race
must'control the continent of America. There
can he no rivalries in the authority: Wo may .
separate to-day, but our 'children will 'curse
us for-it hereafter. Par better to pail through
the ordeal-mow, and come forth Chastened and
triumphant, than, by mistaken policy and
false ideal: of military or political belief, to
leaf, behind us a country. .equalled.only'. by

VOLUME LX.XV---NO. 249
- General Fremont in Boston.
'Berton, 'Aug. 29, 1882.
I don't know that - your 'readers will be
sufficiently interested in this provincial
town to peruse two letters within one .
week, but events of so much importance
have occurred here since last I wrote that -
I . feel justified in sending . yon , details
which will not be communicated by tele
graph. I will pass 'over the
,processions
and speeches on the Common which came .
off on Wednesdiy. - With the exception of
Governor Andrew's soul-stirring,-heart
felt address, the oda/twos patriotic enough,:: '
but it was the patriotism of a set of con-;
servativee, who are so cruelly blind as to . ,
prefer seeing their Sons and brothers dieef -
fever in the bayous sad swamps of NeW - Or- - :
leans and the Chickshominy, rather-than
make use of negroes . to :dig .ditches and,
stand guard inlthe poisoned - night hours..
Corcoran's reception aday was . earnest
and enthusiastic: It watrnaturally enough
rather Irish in Its character. If it serves
to incite enlistments from the large num-,
ber of that and other classes who have
still held back, it will have had the desired
end. , • .
But, the great event of the day, of die •
week, of Boston's history,.it may be justly
said, was the reception of General Fremont
at Tremont Temple. It was all the more
significant in the fact that the'" highly re
spectable" names which are usually consid
ered necessary to give character to public •
assemblages were largely absent; it bad no
official authority. There was little or no
preparation Made; bat the people came_to T

The, Transcript speaks more at length:
...In gther,.columns will be found an as
of the immense • gathering in and
around Tremont Temple, and such reports
of the speeches as we could find room for.
Few, if any, demon strations have ever oc
curred in this city marked by equal earn
estness and enthusiasm. The greeting of--
the principal speaker, and diadusashed
guest was not given so much to the man as
to the representative of an idea.: 'newer.
ome of Gen. Fremont, and the' immense "
applause . that followed his simple and di- -
rect statements, were an endeniemeat of his
opinions as to the cause of the rebellion
and the policy absolutely neoessary' to en- -
sure its destruction. The remarks of 'the
General were delivered-quietly, bat with
an emphasis shoiving that they were the
expression of a deep conviction, the results • .
of his observation and experience inactnal "-
service. The absence of every shadow.a.. :
egotism 'and all references to himself, ex
cept where needed to' sustain his position, , ,
was evidence of entire sincerity and un
