Gen. McClellan.
There has been much and severe comment
upon the courie of Gen. 31oCtmes, in the
press for the last few days past. -The New
York papers, and their correspondents,
generally concur that there has been some
criminal delay somewhere, 'and some of
the attribute it to IticCcELtas% The cor
respondent of the Tribune atatCs the fat:tam
follows: • . •
The order from the War Department,
taking from Gen. McClellan the command
in Virginia tci which by seniority of rank
he was entitled, and - which rumor had al
ready assigned Mm, beam date yesterday,
and has a history. •
Gen. MOClellan's friends admit -that he
doesn't understand the value of time, and
the events of this week hive proved, at
least, the truthfulness of this statement.
As long ago as Wednesday, he received an
order to advance the corps of Gen. Frank
lin to the support of Gen. Pope. Be sent
an excuse`to the effect that it was impossi
ble to do so, for lack of transportations and
supplies. On Thursday nigh; the order
was repeated,r and the time to march fixed
at 6 o'clock, Friday mcrning.
At a late hoar that morning the Presi
dent belieired and stated to visitors that this
column had moved. But the discovery 'was
shortly afterviards made that Gen. Frank
lin was still in Alexandria. '
At 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon the or
der was for the third time issued, but at 4
Gen. McClellan telegraphed that he had
countermanded it, because lie judged ii un
safe to deprive Alexandria and Washing-,
ton of the protection of this corps
On Friday night they moved, bet were
stopped by McClellan at Annandale, about
seven milea from Alexandria, and within
sound of the' e'nemy's guns, for the alleged
reason that it was unsafe, to advandei. Yes
terday they at last moved, but for -three
days - the march was delayed—three days!
during rhiCh General Pope was' fighting
against terrible odds.
. /mother act by General McClellan meets
with' equally sharp criticism. Gen. Pope
sent to him from the battle-field a request
that he would forward him immediately
fiiiage for his horses and food for his men.
Gem McClellan' returned -an answer to
the effect that he would •be happy to nom
ply. witgGeh.Popen suggestion if ho would.
send a cavalry escort. This story seems
,incredible, but it is much more thin a
rumor.
We may add_that while on the Peninsula
for two 'weeks • Gen. MoClellan disobeyed
Gen. Halleek'a orders, delaying for that
length of time after he had received Ma di
rections to embark hie troops for Aquia
Creek and Alexandria, with the Object of
meeting the attack which has now been
made. '
We give these astounding facie without
endorsing them. We can only say, with
the ?Pew York Commercial, that if true, Mc-
Csllan should' be caahiered immediately
the New TOrk Times in an editorial article
says: • . •
We have no disposition to canvass the
reports oncerning Gen. McClellan, which
were rife in the city yesterday. If they'
are true, and he has intentionally withheld
any aid which he could possibly give to our
gallant soldiers straggling with the rebels
within cannon shot of his camp, there is
no need of ' antioipating the punishment
which will be inflicted upon him by an
outraged and indignant nation. For the
present, grave as are the appearances
against him, we, prefer to believe that his
delay in moving forward has been duo to
other causes than his own will.
It will be seen that the Government has
virtually deprived him of any active par
ticipation in the pending conflict, as it has
restricted Ms•oommand to "that portion of
the'rm): of the Potomac which is no or
dered to join Gen'. Pope." As nearly the
whole effective portion of that army has
already joined Gen: Pope; hie command
will be limited to a very few thousand
men, and will be'without importance. The
Government would scarcely- have taken
this step viitliout some - serious - dereliction
of duty on his part. '" • '
Gen. McClellan's career hoe been one 'of
the'mast remarkable inoidentis of- the war.
We shall have ititlue lime, as a matter of
courser a full exposition of it,' with all the
documents'essential to ajust interpretation
of his relations with the - Government. Un
til that time any, decisive j‘idgraent upon
it would he premature.' 'But ho hasntterly
lost the confidence and high consideration
which he once enjoyed at the handtrol the
Amerioii people: ' -• •
