THE BATTLE OF SATURDAY.
We derive AM) following account of the bat
tle of Saturday from a ,gentleman who left
Centreville at 7 o'clock Saturday evening.
,
He is known to. as ab a person who had been
employed by a Idaaing New York paper to

The battle was an'. artillery battle down to
4 o'clock in the afternoon, each party being
engaged in " feeling" the other. Gen. Porter
commanded our left Wing, Sigel and Rehash,-
man the centre and left. McDowell's force
was In the rear, having been much exhausted
In the battle of Friday. The scene of the
fight was the old field of Bull Ran.
' At four o'clockin the afternoon, the enemy
having mused Ids infantry, made a forlorn,
and successful attack upon General Porter.
Opr informant, who witnessed the fighting in
front of Richmond, says that none of the
musketry firing there was heavier than this
of the rebels at Bull Run. It will torn
out, probably; that their rank and, file wore
stimulated by whisky, as , they were at Mal
vern Mills.
When he perceived that his loft wing was
to be attacked, Gen. Pope ordered up (len.
McDowell's force to support Gen. Porter,
but it did not' arrive in time to save G 193.
Porter from defeat, but on the contrary be
.came Gantt involved in the retreat which fol
lowed.
In short the divisions et both Gene. Porter
and McDowell were routed, and fell back in
disorderacross Bull Run stream to Centreville.
Our right wing and centre remained firm end
unbroken, covering the retreat of the left
wing, arid preserving' the army from any se
rious catastrophe.
Our informant does not think our loss on
Saturday, in killed and wounded, to havebeen
greater than on Friday, say four thousand;
but the lon in prisoners was mush morecon
siderable.
. Gen. Franklin's division arrived at Centre
ville on Saturday evening, and there was then
a general concentration of our forces at that
point. Gen. Banks' division, however, had
not arrived there. It was not in the battles
.of either Friday or Saturday, and there were
some apprehensions that it might be cut off.
Our force as massed at 'Centreville on,Sat
urday, evening, was large enough for all pur
poses, arid hap been much increased since.
Our inforriant says that there was no dis
order at Centreville, but everybody was full
of courage and hope as respects the Immediate

Be it enacted by the Senate and Bowe of
Representatives of the United States of Amer
ica in Congress assembled, That the iSecre
tary of the Treasury be and helqtereby
authorized and required to fay, out of any
money ithe Treasury not otherwise up
propriat d, to Laura. A. Stebbins, of Ban
gor,iii. in t e State of Maine ; Catharine C.
Ward, ROxbury, in the State of Massachu
setts ; Rufus Mansur,
of Ithulton,, in the
State of Maine; and James A. Drew, of
Chelsea, in the State Of Massachusetts, the
sum of thirty-three hundred and fifty dol
lars each, being in all the sum of thirteen.
thousand four hundred and twenty-two
dollars in full compensation for three thou
sand three hundred and fifty-three acres of
land, including the timber previously
taken therefrom, in the half township in
the State. of Maine, granted by the State of
Massachusetts to the late General Eaton,
and called the "Eaton grant," to which said
.arties lost title by the _operation of the
fourth article of the treaty of ninth Au
gust, eighteen hundred and forty-two, "to
settle and define the boundary between the
Vnited States and the possessions of her
Britannic Majesty in North America:"
Provided: That the said Laura A. Stebbins,
Catharine C. Ward, Rufus Mansur, and
James A. Drew shall execute deeds of re
lease to the parties holding "possessory" or
"equitable possessory claims" to the said
three thousand three hundred and fifty
three acres of land, or any portion thereof,
as described in the reports made to the
governor and council of Maine by Eben
ezer Hutchison and others, commissioners
under a resolution passed by the legisla
ture of said State on the twelfth day of
April, eighteen hundred and fifty-four, and
the plan of surveys accompanying said
reports, and of record in the land office of
said State: And provided, also, That it shall
appear to the satisfaction of the land
agent of said State of Maine that mien
deeds of release do effectually convey a
good title to said lands, except so far as
said titles have been affected by except„
opera
tion of the treaty aforesaid: And provided
further, That if it shall appear to the said
land agent that the aforesaid parties are
incompetent to make such deeds of release
to the whole of said lands, then they shall
be entitled to, receive a pro rata only of the
compensatieo provided in this act for so
much thereof ae they shall convey as
aforesaid.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That
the Seeretary_of the Treasury be and he is
hereby authorized and required to pay, out
of any unappropriated money in the Treas
ury, to Edmund Monroe and Benjamin
Sewall, of Boston, in the State of Massa
chusetts, the sum of thirteen thousand five
hundred and forty dollars, in the propor
tion of three-fourths thereof to the former
and one-fourth to the latter, in full com
pensation for three thousand three hun
dred and eighty-five acres of land includ
ing the timber previously taken therefrom,
in the western half of "Plymouth town
ship," so called, in the State of Maine, and
the sum of six thousand seven hundred
and sixty-eight dollars to Rufus Mansur,
of Moulton, Blaine, and James A. Drew, of
Chelsea, Massachusetts, in fall compensa
tion for sixteen hundred and ninety-two
acres of land, including the timber pre
viously taken therefrom, in the eastern
half of said township, to which the said
parties severally lost title by the operation
of the fourth article of the aforesaid treaty:
Provided, That the regulations, restrictions,
and provisions contained in the provisos
to the first section of this act shall be made,
to all intents and purposes, applicable to
this section.
Sec. 3. And be it further •enacted, That
the Secretary of the Treasury be and he is
hereby directed to pay, out of any money
in the Treasury not otherwiseappropriated,
to Laura A. Stebbins, of Bangor,Maine,
and Catherine C. Ward, of Irchester,
Massachusetts, the sum of six thousand
six hundred and forty-seven (dollars); and
4, Edmund Monroe and Benjamin Sewall,
o( the city of Boston, in Massachusetts, the
su of seven thousand six hundred and
thiity-five dollars, in the proportion of
three fourths of the same to said Monroe,
and one-fourth to said_ Sewall; and to
James A. Drew, of Chelsea, Massachusetts,
andßufus Mansur, of Houltan, Maine, the
sum of nine thousand three hundred and
tienty-eight dollars; the said several sums
being in full compensation, at the rata of
one dollar per acre, for timber taken from
lands owned by said parties respectively,
and located in the' Eaton grant and Ply
mouth township (eo called) in the State of
Maine, and within the district recognised
as the "disputed territory," and which
timber was taken off and lost to the pro
prietors in consequence of the diplomatic
arrangement entered into between the
United States and Great Britain in eigh
teen hundred and thirty-two, by which
both parties agreed to abstaitt from the
exercise of jurisdictloh in said territory:
Provided, That the payments authorized
and required by this act to be made, in
whole or in part, at the option of the Sec
retary of the Treasury, many of the bonds
of the United States, bearing interest at
the rate-of six per
.centum per annum,
which have been or may hereafter be au
thorized by law to be issued.
