The Union as it Was,
Wo are an uncompromising advocate of
‘The Union as it Was." The splendid em
giro that reached from the Atlantic to tho
raciao, and sent up its morning Ben that
continued to roll louder and deeper until 1 it
dled on the coral isles or the far-off
sea. The land that reposed in the sunshine
of peace and harmony, and whose musio
wah the busy hum of a thousand industries,
and the diapason of a mighty progress!
The wide domain, of thirty.four indepen
dent States, bound by one tie, made of
countless golden threads of sympathy and
kindred, interest, into a glorious' 5 Union.
The nation that was living a generation of
old world experiences in n day, and bound
ing on with elastic power into the foremost
rank of empire. The land of Washington
ana or revolutionary memories—of the
triumph of freedom, and the development
of the unknown power of popular liberty
—The Auekican Union as it Was I
But in an hour all this whs changed.
The accursed spirit, of partisanship and
unbridled personal ambition, cradled only
in tho poisonous malaria nf social despot
ism, raised its hand, and struck a blow at
the existence of the republlo. Relentless,
oruel, diabolical, inhuman, knowing no
law but that of its own infernal purposes,
and regarding no principle but that of al>
soluto degradation of the pooplo to its pow
er, it trampled on majorities, crushed out
the Demooratio ides, stifled the voice of the
people, slew its victims when it could not
debase them to its purposes, in dark coun
cils generated its gigantic frauds, and
wrote over the doorway to its dominions in ,
crimson characters—The Field of Blood
They paused a moment, paralysed by the
blow. But in a moment it recovered, and
gushing np out of a deeper heart than it I
was consoious that it possessed, there came j
a vow of retribution, of Constancy and of
undying fidelity. J
And now we hear from some sources
whence tho foul spirit breathed its first
poisons, the p_itiful.ciy, “The Unon as it
Was ! and we say in answer to these men,
“Uivo us tho Union as it Was I” J
Blot out of the page of history the infa
mous declaration of South Carolina that
the temple of freedom, which had grown to
such radiant proportions, had been destroy- i
edby her treason and he? shame. Place
back on the peaceful walls of Fort Sumter 1
that starry Hag. Hunting over the silent
and unused columbiads whick-no foreign
foe dared to provoke. Wipe out the crim
son from those bloody fields, and bid the
Bowers to spring ;in spotlesS beauty from
ad unstained sod. Roll back to the womb
of the past those groans, and sighs, and
dying cries of men who never had a thought
or evil to their countrymen, but who died
n the defence of their flag. Call up out of
their graves the bodies of tho martyrs who
bavepaid their lives to purchase freedom
for their children and for the world—bid
them go back to their homes and their flfe
stdes, and;moko glad the widow and tho
orphan, while they sing the songs of' love
MOf old. Blot out of the records of time
the story of ten thousand wrongs, of a na
tion s dishoner, and ,a world in ,woe. t
LeUhcm do tljese things, and then cry
In the ecstasy of national pride and glory
for ‘“The Union as it Was I" Until then ■
let the man who hopes to have & home and
abirthright in a free land, for himself and
his children, pledgehis, highest vow to make
tho Union what it bnght to be after the ter
rible ordeal through which it is called to
pass, and I Am, redeemed, purified and ex
alted, it will bo what, it once 1 was, ibeforo
traitors were entrusted with its destinies,
in all the greatness of itspower and the
grandieur of its destiny.— Iron Platform.
A- Woman’s Appeal «o the President.
Mrs. L, Maria Child has addressed a for
cible appeal to the President, on the present
aspectofNational affairs. She closes her ap
peal as follows:
Oh, President Lincoln,-God has placed
yon as a father orer these poor oppressed
millions. Remember their forlorn condi
tion I .Think how they have been for gen
erations deprived of the light of knowledge
and the hope of freedom I Think of the
oruol lashes inflicted on them for trying to
learn to read the word Of Oodl Think of
Uieir wives polluted, and their children
sold, without any means of rodress for such
foul and ornel wrongs! Imagine them
stealing through midnightswamps, infested
with Snakes and alligators, guided towards
freedom by the North Btsr, and then hurled
baok into bondage by Northern blood
hounds in the employ of the United States!
Think how long their groans and prayers
for deliverance have gone np before God
from the hidden recesses of Southern for- 1
ests 1 Listen to the refrain of thoir plain
tivo hymn', “Let my : people go I" Above
all, think of their present woful uncertain
ty, scourged and driven from one to another
not knowing whonrto trust! We are told
that uncounted prayers go up from i their
bruised hearts, in the secreay of their rudo
little cabin, that ‘God would bress Massa!
Lincoln.’ Is thore nothing that touohes I
your heart In the simple trustof these poor,
benighted, suffering souls? In viow of It,:
can you still allow the officers of the United l
States to lash them at their pleasure; and l
send thorn baok.to thoir masters; on the l
plea that the Praxdcnt has given no ordors 1
on the subject ? Shall such offloors go un
rebukod, while Gen. Hunter is checked in 1
his wise and humane policy, and when the 1
groat, and honest soul of Gen. Phelps is !
driven .to the alternative of disobeying the 1
convictions of hinown conscience, or quit
ting the service of his country ? If you
eon thus stifle the moral enthusiasm of no
ble souls; if you con Urns disappoint the
hopes of poor helpless wretches, whotrustin
you os the appointed agent of their deliv
erance, may God forgive you 1 Itwill re
quire tnfintU mercy to do it; 1
I can imagine, in some degree, the em
barrassments of your position," and I com
passionate : you for the heavy weight of
responsibility that Tests upon your shoul
ders. I know that you are surrounded by
devils that have squceied themselves into
the disguise of loads.' I pray you lo'lose
no more time in counting these toads and
calculating how big a devil each may con
tain. Look upward instead of downward.
