"Ncglef’« Treatment of Bebei i Sympathizers. . > • CotuiiniA, Ti;s.i., Aug. 8, 1862. BAMSEIIENr OF HON. A.O. 1\ NICHOLSON. The Hon. A. 0. P. Nioholson, formerly aUnited States Senator, from this State, waa, until a few days past, a resident of this connty, and liysd within a few miles ' of this city. Since the rebellion broko loose in this State-Kioholsen has been a strong sympathiser with the Sooth, thongh he has taken no aclite hand in the work, his sad den patriotism breaking out in the mouth, and then settling in the .pocket, where it '•has become chronic. After, tho oecupatioj of this part of tho State by our troops, Nicholson dwindled down into the leader of a faction of-rebel sympathisers, who made a resolution not to take the oath -under any circumstances; They found the thing to work -eery well, while the army here was powerful; but of late, when our merciful policy had encouraged Ihe guerrillas to ap pear boldly in our midst, Gen. Negley, com manding along thC.line of the .Tennessee - and Alabama &ailroad, has found it neces sary to draw in the ruins, and affairs are hofßb pleasant for-the rebels. Gen. Neg ■ ley announced that all those sympathisers resident in" the neighborhood where out rages might be 1 committed by guerrillas i should pay all damages arising from such outrages. One or two being committed, the wealthy secessionists of tho neighborhood were arrested and fined sufficiently to pay the-damages. -He also required them.to take the oath and to giro bond, with rebel security, in large sums for, their loyalty of coudUot.' He also told them tbst ho knew. . ■ thsy -wero aware of all projected raids, and ■ that he expected from-..them and intended to base information. • But tho Hon. Mr. Nicholson and hts colleagues could not take i hint; and boasted that they would hot take the oath of allegiance. -Hearing of this;-Gen. Negley sent a guard and ar rested Mr. NicholsoD, Col.: Joseph Branoh and Judge W, P. Martin, the nugleadera. The party arreslingMr. Nicholson reported guile a scene at hts house, in wliioh Mrs. Nicholson engaged in a tirade against the “Lincolnitca," aud adorned her husband to rot in prison before taking the oath, all of which pleasant proceeding Mr. Nicholson promised to carry out. - He was committed to the guard-house and pul'dh prison, fare, Gen. Negley refusing to allow aecessipmsU to furnish him wlth luxuriea. .. ' Mr; Nicholson bad been mcarceratod but a day or two.when his wife came in style to'see him, and was refused admittance. - She was recommended- to go to General Negley. Sbo did so, and requested an tn tertlew. This was nt first refused; but, she persisting, General Negley waited on her at the Columbia Athenaeum, a pmato Behool nefir hts headquarters. Mrs. Nichol son opened the conversation by stating that shs’ had been refused entrance to the guardhouse,- and had_come to him to ask permission-tar-sea hefc husband. General . Negley refused, saying briefly and em phatically that no interflow with Mr. Nioholson could be had. Mrs. N. then bo ■ ■ gan to appealto.the General, asking him r- ■ : - -if ha could bo snch a barbarian as to refuse ■■■-; to let a wife see her husband.. Gen. Neg iey ruplied:—“Madame, I think I do him a kutaness in keeping yonaway from him. - ’: •This excited the ire and indignation of the lady ; bnttho Gcnbral did: not giro her time to reply. , . . . "Tonr'ihfiuence over him,” he continued, > "hasof lafe been exercised only for, evil; ■ and not my-conduot,.bnt yours, has .been - barbarous;:-Instead of influencing him :to "remain quiet, or, as ho should in duty-be, J loyal to the Government, yon encourage " him to show hts disrespect for it, and to his treason; and when he is arresl cd, and is about, to be .punished for his - treason, yon 6°ad him to farther disrespect 'and treason by saying you had rather see him buried beneath tho trees of your lawn than haTC him take the. oath. This, mad ' erne,-is barbarous and ; heathenish in a .woman."- The lady, after apauae, asked, “Bid Gen eral Negley know in what place her hus band hadbeen confined?” General Negley did not. Ho supposed, -. howovor. that ‘ Mr; Nicholson had fully in : formed nimsolf of what kind of prison it -' was, as when ho had been requested to take ' the oath ho had refused,, saying ho was ’’ready to take the consequences. ~ Mrs. Nicholson—Do you mean to place ray husband—the Hon. Mr. Nicholson—on a level with Ihe common soldiers of your. . command, who are confined In tho guard ■ - house for drunkenness and theft? , ... ' General Negley—Certainly, madamo, I dq not hold him any: better man than my • soldiers, and I doubt if any .of them are guilty of so. serious and disgusting a crime as treason. , . • Mrs. Nicholson began to explain, one had not said she would sooner see. him ; • barfed, tef ci>° had said she would prefer 5 ' ' to set him rot rather than take the oath. Gen. to dispose of him and break up the gang of which he was leader, issued an order requiring them all to take the oathand give bonds. Mr.-Nichol son was disposed of in n paragraph or two of the same order, which I append below, for tho purpose of showing the sequel—the probable fims of his political career. Letter from “Occasional.” IYabiumiton, Aug. 22,1862. The sympathizers with treason are be ginning to proceed from words tb'blows. It is believed that they only wait the oppor tunity to drop their threaUrand tako up arms. The late firing of the bridges in Ohio was undoubtedly the work of theso degraded and disloyal men. Let us not re gret that they arc showing Mieir sincerity after this fashion. It is worthy of theca and admonitory to us. There is, besides, a harmony in it which shows that there oan be consistency even m scoundreUsm. If the citizen of a free State is opposed to the Re public and in accordance with the rebels, why should ho not strike as; well as speak for his conscientious belief 7 If he can sec the Sufferings of the Union soldiers without a pang, why should hei not odd to tho number of these sufferers ? Dr. Olds,, of Ohio, did not invoke the “Democrats’ to i riot and in a mere rhetorical 1 phrenxy; he' uttered the sage counsel in the earnest expectation that it .would be followed. Let Stonewall Jackson take heart. All the people of the loyal States •are not loyal. There ore some, andtheso. not a few, who would welcome his advance into these Slates. Craftily and ably aro i they preparing -for his advent, or else for 1 the ascendency of the rebellion. They are l resolved to keep their records'clean of I any blot or stain. Every aot they per- I form that may savor of a tribute to the I Union is qualified with abuse of the Gov- , t ernment. Every secret word is a secret ! prayer for the .Confederacy. If public opinion forces them to denounce that sub lime achievement, they denounce the Aboli tionist* BttUnfyre. As they cannot openly organize for the rebellion, they ban organ ize the « Democratic party.” As they can not vote for Davis, they can fote against- Lincoln. You get no money from them for i the Union cause, or for/the relief of the i Union soldiers—not a farthing. And woe, I upon the timid sympathizer who is cowed i into a subscription! / Be is Bhunnedby his I associates as a felon; classed with the Ab- I olitionists; and abused for giving money I U> assist this Abolition war.. Look, al, the 1 long lists of the names of tbase>wbo have given to these noble objects* and the name of a sympathizer is as rare as the name of 1 a British nobleman. * How well this com parison holds out in another respect! » Uh 1 very few exceptions, and- these mqinly I among those who, by going into the war,.j have shortn their regret for having been associated with these dangerous politicians, | the men who supported all the atrocities and rascalities of the slaveholders and their | tools under Buchanan, are now every where prominent in sympathizing with the re bellion and in opposing the war. - They | havo neither been tempted nor intimidated ! Into sympathy for the Republic ; and there I is no shadow of doubt that when the occa- ! Bion is offered, they will follow their opin- j ions to the bloodiest extremities.;-, Ido not oharge* Mr. Hughes with intending this I sort -of vengeance upon his_country; but i Tfe must not forget that Gen/ i was equally pathetiq in his appeals for the CoDßtitutidn, and no less pathetic as- to future, before his disaffection-—so fragrant of Democracy in tho blossom, ripened into the putrid fruit or treason and of war. Breckinridge was exceedingly boisterous in his patriotism when told that he would end in tho ranks of tho traitors; and Hu&hes is as industrious in proving his loyalty as he is honest in entertaining sen timents exactly the reverse. It will bo a 1 great pieco of good fortune for Mr. Hughes if the rebellion should triumph, -In that event, all his present labors will be richly and gratefully remembered and repaid, and he can share with the Brigadier the honpr of having assisted to betray and destroy , I.his country. - : pccAfcioSAL., ige I Tub returned offioora represent ib&tthey were treated horribly -in Biobmond, haring even'lees room Lhan at Saulsbury, and were fed on sour 1 bread and watery with spoiled bacon.
