Most of the saved are now at Fairfax Seminary* ia the convalescent hospi tal, while some of them have joined their regiments. : The above are those who were in the river and were rescued when near death’s door. . TheUnveitigation will probably dis close who was to blame for this'dreadful acci dent in which 73 persons—men and women, lost their lives. A new regiment, the first I beleive of the 30(1,000 called fur July Ist, arrived here and went into camp last evening. It has a full regimeot and is in command of A. 8. Diven, Representative from New York. Tbe Secretary] of State, his son Frederick and his son’s wife,- rode np -tbe avenQo in an open car riage at the bead.of this body of brave men. The reception was grand. Tho town looked on as tho sturdy fellows filed past, and cheer after cheer ran aloog the line of the crowded way. Considering number of troops we have all.seen here, this reception was pe culiarly flattoriog. THE DISTRICT. I do not know bow volunteering succeeds in these tep miles square. I do not think, tho number of people, there is probably a.spot of the same size where the native dwellers ore wore generally disloyal. They have po principle I judge. They have always been accustomed, to living by their wits—snatching subsistence and wealth off the Government in whatovor way they could get it. There are over COO federal office hold ers belonging to this city. Efforts are making hero to encourage vol unteers by n liberal bounty. The Land Of fice employees, about 100 in number, on Thursday night-dast voted one per cent, of their salaries to go into tho volunteer fund. The money thus realized will be aboatsl,BUo. In the same “office, a military company has been formed, with .the Commissioner of the office—Judge J. M. Edmunds—at its head. The company has proffered its services to the -government. It numbers one hundred and eleven members. Without intending to dis- Earago or call in question the loyalty of the eads of other bureaus, I think it can bo said justly that the people havo Iq Judge Ed munds a'min whoso whole Atari is with the country in this struggle. What we are and have been cursed with Is, this half-hearted way of supporting the war. Just in propor tion as men have looked upon slavery with allowance, they have had a tender look upon our << 6oathern brethren.” Judge Edmunds boiog an anti-slavery man, is heart and soul with the cause that declares the root of this strife must bo plucked up and this war closed, so that it may stay closed. He belongs to the sturdy class of Western men, who are earnest in their faith and seal, and who having long dealt with actualities, go in for making this an actual war, whioh those who made shall feel. j MB. CLIT. I do not think I over saw Cassias M. Olay more in earnest than in his speech here'the other night. Yon have doubtless seenfex tracts fromjt, bat they, or a fall report.of the speeoh, fail to givo any conception of: the warmth of bl* dennnoiationof that drab and scallion among nations*—England. Recently, the soldiers at the Fairfax Semi nary Hospital, underchargeof Dr. Armstrong, made some complaint about their food and hospital accommodations. The ease was re ferred by tho parties receiving the complaint to -the Surgeon General for an examination. Tne Surgeon General ordered it to tne Medi cal Director. The Medical Director' referred the case to Dr. Armstrong, who, of course, reported very favorably on bis own case, and had thecomprainingnatients put in' the guard house. Dr. Armstrong is now in charge of Fall's Church Hospital, but it Is said much Ul-feeling Is entertained toward him* by ths patients for this case of selfish government. OEN. 3KNHAM ORDERED OH DUTY. Pope’s Army, .Headquarters Gex.Siuel, Near Cedlr’Hocntaxn;') P/iday,August 16, 1862. . / In nearly every boose between Cedar Moan tain and the Rapidan, wounded rebel officers and soldiers are found. Major Andrews, Jaokson’t Chief of Artillery, Is at the point' of death, in Mrs. Garnett’s house, near Crooked run. He informed one of our offioers that his wound was received at ©’dock on Saturday afternoon. Two negroes who came within our tines this morning report that Jackson is driving all the colored' people before him, and has ordered that they shall be shot upon making the least attempt to escape. Scouting parties from GordonariWe report Jackson to havo made that point with bis en tire army. His retreat from Cedar Mountain was very preoipUate. Wounded rebel soldiers found on the line of march this morning, all admit great distress in the rebel army. y and deserters are arriving so fait that oar energetic Provost Marshal, Col. Rob inson, can hardly provide for them. They say more than 5,000 oonscripts left tho ranks of' Jackson between/ Gordonsville and Cedar Mountain, and are straggling through the woods on the lino of the march. The rebel regiments, instead of being full as the rebel officers told us, are much thinner than our own. Impressing does not seem to swell their numbers. The first opportunity occurring for desertion, the conscripts all leave. The rebel loss in the late battle was without' any doubt rnuoh greater than our .own* Mqj. Andrews thinks it could not less than 2,000. He was in the aet of placing part of a. battery in a new position, when a shell ex ploded at hjs feet and wounded, him.. The rebels, according to his statement,. bad but two batteries in the fight, bhtAhese wero’di vided into seven sections; which led us to-be-’ lleve their strength much greater thanit was.’ Reports from the south bank of the-Rapi dan this evening say the rebels are , again ap pearing in foroe oti (bat side of the river.
