A few days ago we mentioned the a man named David Gaw had been found dead in the canal, at the Washington hotel, having evidently fallen from tho platform of the hotel. Since the inquest, suspicion fell upon an Irishman named James Brady, who has been arrested and committed for murder, it being alleged that he pushed Gaw over the railing. Brady was brought, before Judges Sterrett Mellon and Richey on a writof Aa6eo» corpus, and his discharge asked on bail, through his attorney, Mr. Cochran. One or two witnesses were examined, but nothing was elicited calculated to implicate Brady la tho crime of murder. It appears that Brady was employed tend* i log a ewiteh on the railroad, and being un well, came down to the hotel to got a drink of braudy and pepper. After drinking the mix ture, ho went out of the bar room and threw it up, his stomaoh being weak. Gaw was then sittingon the railing, and about that time, or soon after, fell over. This occurred at a late hour of the night. A young man, who was present, testified that Brady begged him, for God s sake, not to say anything about what happened—but ho did not see the man pushed over. r The Court fixed the bail at *l,OOO, but b * ing nnlb, ° hod. tho eeourily, la •till in ptiaon. Certain prominent WoMeni gentlemen wait ea on the President to-day. tender him two negro- regiments from theW'est. the organiie tion of which could be completed and they I ready to. tako the fieldTsithin ten days. The : Interview; was protracted, and the discussion ■covered tho whole ground of arming negroes, 'vitb ail its possibilities for good and evil Tlte President finally closed by announcing that ha had made up his mind, at present, not to accept of the servioes of armed negroes. He would use them as teamsters, cooks, and laborers on entrenohmonts, and in every ca pacity save fighting. Ho declared that, to accept regiments of armed negroes would lose forty thousand white soldiers now in the army, and wou)d drivo, seme of the border States out of Iho Onion. Do had deliberately made up his mind to this polioy, and should adhere to it, unless totally new circumstances should require a change. f This announcement causes the utmost as | tonishment among Western men, who had supposed Jim. Lane's project fully authorized by the President himself. His determination upsets that whole scheme, and will also work decided revolutions in plans elsewhere. It is believed that the President cannot now consistently allow Hunter to goon with his colored regiments in South Carolina, and will put an end also to the organisation of negro troops in numerous other quarters.
