a General.
_ It seems to be the opinion of a number of
persons, who , have lately become exceeding
ly restless, owing to the warm weather, or
the fever-crisis of excited partizanship,
of which, consciously , or unconsciously,
they, are the victims, that no word of die:
'approving criticism should appear in our

Leonean and winter, with the same class of
persons, in reference to the policy of inac

they regarded'it as the'height of presump

to censure ant policy, or to find any man

Tho,,pi . oceedinge of our piesent Congreis,
,
the course of the Abolition press, have
driven hundreds of thousands of Union
men who toted fer the Union; in their re
spective States but twelvemonths ago) into
the rebel _conks.. There was ro place else
for them. They could not stand out againet
their fiery 'rebel neighbor; because Con
gresegave.them noencouragoment to resist
rebel - encroachments. On ,the contrary,
Congress daily famished 'the rebels with
overwhelming evidence that the intention
of the war tray the destruction of the in
stitution of slavery. The consequence is,
that the Southern people are more united
now in treason than they, were six: months
ago;
and if our Congress goes on es it
has been going, the result will be greater
unanimity among the rebels every day.
Bills of confiscation and l"emanciptition,
hacked by speeches and editorials favorable
to arming slaves,,that they may learn the.
art of cutting
,their masters' throats. are
not the best anemia to encourage' a Union
feeling yheie slavery exists.
Air. Banat. : hi a candidate'for the office of
Surveyor General of Pennsylvania, and
yet he is rendering all the aid and comfort
ho can to the' rebels. Iris paper could be
read with approbation by JEFF. Davis and.
hie crow of traitors and could be justly , '
quoted as 'eyidence that the rebels have'
many sympathisers in the—North. Tho,
acts of Congresi.which the Post condemns,
and presents:as apologies 'for rebellion, are
also the acts of the President, for he hes
ratified everyone ilSich has been presented
to him, and they are the acts of the loyal
people of the Northern States.
In another:part of the same article, from
which the shave treason is quoted, the PM
sneers at the failure of the administration
to put down the rebellion, and says it "isa
l amentablecOmment ary upon the patriotism
and prowess of the Northernpoople And
it charges thiS s failure upon the Republican
Congress, and the Republican Press, when
it is well known that Congress has voted
men and money without stint, and has dis
played a magnanimity the olitical world
never saw before, in puttineThese armies
into the hands Of -.Generals who have be
longed to the opposite party:: -The Post may
.sneer away at. the North, for the consola
tion of its secesh friends, btit the rebellion
will finally despoil Jeff. Davis, and his
Northern friends. .
Duty id this Time - of Peri
There never was a time in the history of
our country w)tich called for more calmness
and prudence than the present; and yet it
is doubtful whether there has been a time
in that history in which the reins have
been more ccrrepletely given l hp to the baser
passions of factious loon, than now. While
the prestehas a; ditty to perform in abating
as much as possible the madness of the
hour, and in striving to direct the public
mind into cbattnels of self•sacrifcing pa
triotisrn,it is aiso,sOlemnly required not to
yield. up its high prerogatives to any pop-
ular clamor.
There is one duty which is *unquestiona
ble—to support. the National e‘tiministm
tioc while it is : legally. and honestly striv
ing to crush this unhallowed rebellion.
The Administrition has of late been most
bitterly assailed by one portion of the press,
and all the reverses or disasters which
have befallen our arms are blamed upon
it, whether justly or unjustly. It should
undoubtedly be held responsible for errors
when they are clearly manifest; but the
wholesale attacks made evince that they
come from quarters more anxious to build
up a political ititerest , than to. sustain the
country. •
As far as the Republican party is con
corned, which is the 'sheet-anchor of the
motion's hope, we rest very calmly. We
believe it will be sustained by the people,
when the trial comes. Our anxiety is not.
for the party, as . , such, at the present time,
but for the salvation of the country, whose
future is endangered by the vile schemes of
unprincipled melt who are seeking to dis
tract the public ;mind, and to draw it off
from the great struggle with the rebellion,
and settle it upon minor issues, and es
pecially to weaken the hold of the adminis
tration on the public confidence.
In the light of these views we copy the
following vigorotts criticism on the aspect
of political affairs, in connection with the
recent movement in the Peninsula, from
•
Wilkie' Spirit of tire Times:
"Shocked and dejected at the unforseen- re
sults, the loyal public have anxiously endea
vored to ascertain the !cause; while, eakieg
adviititago of the general perturbation, every
traitor in our midst has sought to locate the
blame against the :Government. It is also a
feature of this , vicious clamor, nay it is its
leading feature, that all these denunciations
of the Government, are Invariably accomots
sad by the moat fulsome eulogies of General
McClellan, and a eitism is thus attempted to
beset on foot, the object of which is either to
open a Presidential campaign in his favor, or
to distract the 'public' mind on. the subject of
the, prosecution of the war.: •
aThis game has been ieing , on now for a
considerable time, and It appears to us a little
singular • that 0-1111. McClellan suffers- it to
proceed:without a,!word 'calculated to rebuke
the treason, and sttstain the Administration
from such injurioutt slanders.. lie_ cannot fail
to see that he is put forward virtually as the
leader of this factiOns opposition, and that his
pretended wrongs are the redoubts behind
which these it neakingtrai tors level their shafts,
against - thUbosom of the country. A warfare
of this sort, being made apparently in his in
terest, should receive a share of, his attention;
audit he be not able to drive back the arnied
insurgents, he can at least rebuke their slan
' derous allies who are co-operating with them
in the midst of our Society.
• "In ilioking back upon the battles of the
• week, and reviewing the fruitless valor of our
soldiers in connection with the sad results, it
is net &Montt to arrive at the conclusion that
-the whole campaign of the Peninsula has been
a blunder. The true' road to Richmond was
:duo south from Washin4ton, by which course
an army of 250,00fi_men r covering the capital
as it - advanced, might many a time - during the
last nine months hive bleu driven in ono
Compact massupon the then debilitated'Rebel
stronghold. The division of it into parts, so
that one-half might take the Strategic, circuit
round Robin Elood's barn ,with the door open
and the road clear (vide Jackson) toward the
North, was the most fatal 'error that- could
have been committed; and the commanding
general who consented to perform the leading
part is truly responsible for the weakness of
the scheme. If he - did not approve of it, be
