My lad letter brought down the history'of this expedition to Friday evening, preceding. the banquet, whentny letter was mailed. I will not attempt a description of the lan gnat, whiehlook place at nine o'clock Friday evening, in the spacious dining hall of the magnificent 'Tremont." You can clip - as much as you find room for in Satirday's Chicago papers. Sallee to say, here, that the banquet itself, under the direction of Messrs. These branches form the harbor of Chicago. They are crowed by iron bridges of a single span, turning upon a central pivot pier. _ Although the bridges are long and massive, two men, by _the use of a capstan, speedily swing them longitudinally to the river, at the sound of the steam whistle of an approaching tug- , the ve hicles and pedestrians at the , crossing mean while keeping their patience:is best they may. Thai we passed by steam propellor, through the short canals of Chicago, four, miles, to . Bridgeport, the terminus of the river and ca nal. Here there is a look up to a level about 7 feet above the lake, and several feet above any possible supply of water for a feeder. Here would seem to be a dilemma rendering a canal impossible. But science overcame the seeming difficulty, and-at the same time con ferred a great boon upon the people of the city, by creating a current in the river, thus purifying the otherwise stagnant water. Four immense engines of 500 horse power, wereoon tracted for with Meson. Knap d Wade, of Pittsburgh ; these drivi two water wheels, 50 'feet in diameter, with broad paddles, whiob bale up the wafer out of the river into the ca nal feeder, a height of about 7 feet, of the rata of 30,000,000 gallons per hour t These two wheels have throwing capacity sufficient to empty the Chicago rivers into the canal in, a period of 48 hours, provided the entrance into the lake was closed; or, to fill a canal 9 miles long, 90 feet wide and 5 feet deep, during the same period 1., This not only .-furnishes an abundant and, uniform, feeder for ; the upper level if the canal, but creates a eufficient cur rent in the river, inland from the lake, to keep , the former Ora and free from the smells pe, collar to docks when neither tide nor currents affect the water. We stopped to examine the beef add pork packing establishment of Mum. Origin.. • Co., near Bridgeport. This is said to be the most extensive establishment of its kind in the world. Last year the firm put up 75,000 packages, equal to 90,000 barrels. Messrs. It. M..t 0. 8. Hough, ;firm of packers close by, (to whole senior member your correspon dent is indebted for many courtesies) have also a largo establishment; and pack about 40,000 barrels eminent-. This latter lira; it will be remembered; took the premium at the World's Fair, in London, in 1851, for moss beef. We are astonished at the magnitude of the trade sang this river. Here is a schooner of some 400 tons bonbon, unloading a cargo of English salt at a packing house. Yonder is an elevator, with two canal boat loads of corn, from 'Central Illinois, being carried up to the building, and a large schooner receiving a cargo of the same staple, froth the same build ing at the same time:, No handling of grain here. It is elevated by machinery from cars and canal boats into these vast reservoirs, called elevators, weighed and binned, and again transferred to•the lake vessels through spouts, directly into the hold. Some of these elevators have a capacity of 700,000 bushels! This trip up the river impressed upon „our minds the magnitude of the trade of Chicago in these three great items-grain, lumber' id meat. A FLAG or'.citicsca YAWL& 'We returned to our hotel about viz o'clock In the evening. As we walked up Dembrirn street, wo stopped a moment to wonder at an immense paving flag in front unite drug store old. Reed, Esq., 11l by 22 feet, and' 8- inches lu - thickness, The paving and building atone of the city is of an axes lent quality, and is found on the canal, in the neighborhood of Joliet. But .1 must hasten to a class. The entire history,Bf the excursion, what we were shown, and the kindness and open-hearted, hospitality of our entertainers, would till a - volume. I can only hint at the leading items, and leave it to your most sanguine imagination to fill up the blanks. • At amen o'clock, the tacuestox oFt.rna Luca was announced as in order. Your correspond eat; after a careful observation of the wind and weather, concluded to remain 'on terra firma. The enemy have. fortifications here, and are bringing re inforcements from Savannah yin the Charles ten and Savannah liailroad--the bridge of which the 50th Pennsylvania ailed tb burn. The precise nature of their deforms - is coining slowly to light with each day's 'advance. To-day.two intelligent contraband's came In from Charleston, and report that the moat of the people are removed, and that the general expectation seemed to be a surrender of the city. They say the Confederate lone in town is destitute, some being barefoot, and all inno cent of rations. Their representations convey . a decided Impression of demorallestion .and want. Frorri Fremont's Army. correspondent of the New York Times ,writes as below. It will be ieeolleeted that . the battle of Cross Keys "oodurred on BUD dr4:-oit Monday the army marched to Port Kepublic, and on Wednesday marched back to Harrisonburg. This is the lait account: Pour itseutiuc, Tuesday, Jane 10. Yesterday nwrning we again marched in Jackson's wake, reaohing the banks of the South Fork.of the Sheruattloah at this place a little before noon. The bridge bad been fired some 2%-houre-previously, and wt7found only its, sharrad ,and smoking, re:Mains. A long wagon train was. Orders came from headquarters this morn ing, at 2 o'clock,to pack up Mir `pontoons and fall back with all possible celerity. I suspect that something is wrong. Shields, according tto all .stories, was whipped byoverwhelming 11 ambert„yesterday 'morning; a few low Port Republic. A prisoner we have cap tured, who was in the affair and wounded by a shell, says Shields made it' splendid . fight, and drove them steadily back until they brought up .their whole reserve, and crushed hint by superior numbers. 'lie says he hat been in about all the Southern fights, but-has' not before seen anything ; '1!0 little end yet so -11-41 lied." It; , seem to .be well established that Jackson has 'limn reinforced by Gem Longstreet and Smith. Quite a large force lay over; in the valley, within easy range, which wasat first set down as Shields'. But it seemed singular tome that Jackson should have placed kis tmin thus in therms, and neat an enemy, without any guard, nor could I exactly.sbe why Shields should be so tardy in communicating with tts. It now turns out that. it is a portion of Jilichn?, son's army that confronts us.". We are laying down a pontooa bridge, and the most intense eagerness is manifested among our boys to be over and at them. I repress my enthusiasm,, for it is just dawning on my mind, that how ever anxious one may be to - chase an enemy, it is sometimes a very unfOrtnne thing to overtake him, especially vrhettas in the pres ent instance, ho chances to be oSO:digest.. Any way, if Shields, as rapier says, - has been ordered bask, we have done the wisest thing possible. . The river Is fordable below, ,and we might have found a largo Inimical force in our. reas, and our, supplies, cut, off .at any inconvenient moment. There has been' bad generalship somewhere in permitting Jackson. to escape, but it does not rest With this Depart- Mont. .Three large and well appointed &via ' ions were brought from Fredericksburg, - ex pressly to put a u s ts e n en his treek.
