' ' The Man who seeks, a seat .in Congress at
this terrible crisis in our country's history,
seeks to take upon himself a aerioue responsi
bility. The war, I trust, will soon be over;
the "last ditch" will soon be reached by the
rebel armies; but oar arms cannot subdue
that enmity out of which this bloody conflict
sprang: An irreooncilable antagonism exists
between the social systems of the two sectione.

I have long been persuaded the it was a
grist:Oats - ice to bind up these two ntagonis
tic elements in one. system - of igovernmerit
But the founders of the Repnb 'a did-not:in
tend to do that thing. They egardid slave

it and gave to it some slightsafeguards and
guarantees,. hoping at th time they did so,'
that they would not len be required. Bat
the invention and intro action of the cotton

Of course th' war marks a new era in our

so that a omogeneous civilisation and a her- -

i ns state of things is the great task that lies
/before us. Admirably has President Lincoln
put this grand idea into practical form ; and
the abolition of slavery in the District of ,Co
lumbla is the beginning of that process which
will ultimately break every Ake and "lot'"the
oppressed go free." , To carry on this work of
crushing out slavery, and at the same time
preserving unimpaired the freedom of the
people, is the difficult and delicate task• that
lies before those who shall for some years to
come, occupy the halls of the national legis
lature. Like the wheat and the taresin the
parable liberty. and slavery have hitherto
been su ffered to grow together; but now they
are ripe, the - harvest is came, and they must
be separated.
- But stormy• as those times are, they are
cheering and hopeful compared with what we
had twenty-five years *go, while 'I was in
Kittanning, Then the whole nation, Whig
and Democrat, parson and politioith, with a
few despised exceptions, were hi:ming the
knee to' the dark spirit of slavery. 1 was
_despondent then; but now I am full of hope.
The thunder of rebel' guns et Sumter broke
the dark, dull cloud which bad hang, like the
funeral pall of freedoin; over the whole nation
for more than a ;quarter of a century; and
never since men were upon the earth wee such
a glotions outboret of patriotism seen. , I tell
