The Pittsburgh Pal, in an article on the

the editorial control of the Gazette, was in
favor of a later Convention, and voted :
against the nomination of any candidate

Profetirig.Secessionliits
A correspondent - of the New York Tim er,,
writing from near , Bottom's k i3ridgu, on the
Chickahtirainy; Slated - that whey our army
arrived at liottoues , B . ridge; the . rebel gen- I
ends had just left the stylish residence of
one Crump, wheis they had been feasting.
The man Crump is a -noted, avowed, and
opensenessionist, and has done everything
, in his power -to Sidithe'rebelliom The let
ter says:
As I was standing conversing with this
'contraband, Dr. Crump rode up to the
headquarters of Gen. Hooker, on a stylish
bay horse. He had ,co - me to make a com
plaint'against some of our men, for steal- -
ing his wood, as he termed it. The Gen
eral, with his peculiar suavity of manner,
assured him no . .depredations upon the
property of private citizens of Virginia
would he tolerated, and referred him to the
Provost Marshal of the Division' Capt.
Charles L. Young, who would immediately
take measures to'remedy the evil Complain
ed of. --- A guard was dispatched to Dr.
Crump's house, and one of the number car
ried with him a small American flag,
which he- raised on the gate-post fronting
.C. ump's mansion. This proceeding proved
hateful in the eyes of the Crumps, old and
young, so much so that the Doctor—the
elder Crump—modestly requested its re
moval from the gateway of his, palatial
mansion.
"What," says one of Capt. George Lefort's
Zouaves, "you claim protection from our
troops, and want'iristo take that flag down?
No you don't Old Crump I" The Doctor's
visage fell four degrees at
,this unheard of
barbarity and unscrupulous tyranny on the
- part of the guard, and contented himself
by closing the shUtters of, his windows on
the front of the house; to show his contempt
for the emblem of freedom.
Dr. Crump had the honor of dining Jeff.
Davis, Magruder, Lee and Johnson last
.Friday, who bid him a horny but affection
ate farewell, at our troops pressed them
too close to make it either convenient or
desirable to prolong their stay with the
"patriot, Dr. Crump," as Jeff. Davis , styles
him in a short epistle found by ono of the
guard stationed at his house. Crump is
sound, if any one can be sound on the doc
trine of secessiouisto, rnnd he delights in
making hie doctrine pubUcly known, while
claiming protection, from the Government
he repudiates in Coto. `_.
Our soldiers are astonished, and I con
fess I an( a little inclined that way, to un
derstand why thei Government protects the
property of notorious rebels . ; who embrace
every opportunity', to make their sentiments
known in the heart of our camps; but
such is the case. Before the rebel army,
Union men were forced to fly from their
homese their properties devastated, ,their
lands confiscated or sequestered for their
devotion to our government, consigned to
exile and poverty for the crime of Union
ism. They look foe - retribution upon the
heads- of their oppressors. They look in
vain ! Each blade of grass, in every no
torious Secessionists' field, is fully protected
by a special order. They turn up their
nose at our legal tender paper, receiving
nothing but silver and gold for their farm
and dairy products, and demanding fabu
lous prices. It may be policy to protect the
property of our enemy, keeping the hor
rors of war which they created away from.
their'door—hut I don't believe in it.
While rebellionis made so_ comfortable,
and Unionism is at a discount, is it any
ionde'r thitt there is no Union feeling dis
played at the South. Secessionists are pro
tected and petted by the Geneillit of both
armies, while Unionists are hairied and
persecuted on the One side, and neglected
on the other. linti long is this policy to
last?
Have the Rebels Left Richmond
There seems to hes general
.impression
that the rebels have evacuated Richmond—
'or at least have only sufficient troops to hold
McClellan in check, so as to gain time, and
. that they do not intend to fight a battle
there. The New York Evening Pea says
Gem McClellan has doubtless been fight
ing with a rebel rear-guard ever since he
left Yerktown • but it is not likely that
this rear-guard is 'composed• of less than
half the rebel army, else McClellan would,
have driven it much faster than' he has.
If, as our telegraphic; correspondent from
WhiteHOuse reports to-day, on the authority
of . affialloon reconnoissance , Richmond is
evacuated, then 'we may suppose the main
rebel army already on its way to the North.
Then we may expect to hear of a pell-mell
_pureeit by Gen. McClellan, in which, though
the enemy may leap' obstacles in kis way,
we can by proper energy, and the determi
natio.n which the Movement demands, come
'upon them, and either capture or destroy
their whole army, before it can cross the
_Potomac. In this, Gen. Fremont's army
could-probably help, by - joining the pursu
ing force, so that we should pick up our
reinforcements on the way.
General Banks.
The ability fiisplayed'by Gem Banks, in
his retreat before vastly superior forces, a
distance of . fifty-one Miles, bringing
,oft
with him nearly all his wagons, and all his
guns and Munitions,' and fighting all the
way,ia very remarkable, when we recol
lect thtit it is' not more than a year since
he commenced iiisinilitaiy-mireer. Having
only about feo:r ibeusand men, and - being
suddenly and : unepeetedly assailed by
tAtty thousak and being obliged to
start immediately, :fighting two or three
battle; and having to 'cross a- wide river, it
is wearing that he escaped at all. A
march of thirty-five' miles in' one day, en
cumbered ashe was, ii a feat not often no
oomplished—rbut to:fight and march both,
and make thirty-five miles,' is a great
achievement.' For energy, Prudence and
ability, . Gen, Banks is secend 'to few, if'
any, officers in the Federal service.
