Much lies - been said against men leaving
their 'almost destitute families, to join the
army, implying that only young unmar
ried men'should enlist. There is a plenty
of the latter class it is true, who have re
mained tejljong inactive. I know of many
who would' reject with scorn the imputa
tion of cowardice, but who refused to go
_ with us, not 'from personal motives, but
purely from a•fear of the effect such action
would hive on the minds of friends and
relatiires at home. Their lathers needed
- their services, perhaps, or mother's and
sister's tears could not be resisted, •and
thus the arms and-hearts of hundreds have
been paralyzed.. This is not the spirit that
•
adjusted our fathers in former wars. Fam
ily, griefs were all absorbed in the:one

cause of this withholding the services of
those yoang; men_ who. thus lay behind,
forgetting that in the glorious future, they
must and will fled a bright reward. 'Let
them ecime,forward to their manifest-duty;
These remarks may seem severe, and as
reflecting upon personal characters, but I
speak advisedly, and from experience and
. my own observation.
• It is clearly 'the duty of every able
bodied youngman to come forward, and aid
in every way the good cause as our country
needs all' the talent and strength that can
be brotight into the field.
I do ;not mean in this connection, to
speak of women's tears as a' thing to be
!despised; they are natural when bonds of
long years of happiness are thus suddenly
sundered, but ought not to be considered as
'material obstacles; to the ;performance of
duty, however painful it may be. -
Tito:ladies; God bless them, have its num

States is the Family of families,
and should
it fall, we aim all . lest. Got and may
Heaven watch over you. And well do I

Foreign Intervention
The correspond jut, at Washington, of the
Now York Eti‘..isiti Port states, in a dispatch,
yesterday, that ens rumors of foreign inter
vention are set afloat, and kept afloat, by the
secessionists exclusively—at the same time
he admits that the course of one or two of the
foreign ministers has been such as toeounte
stance the rumor. There is , tio ground what- -
ever for nine-tenths of the gossip that pre
vails, both in that and the European capitals,
on this subject of intervention. The corny,-
fondent of the L'oeniny Post adds :
There has been some danger of inconsider
ate action on the part of the French Minister,
it is thought, but the recent • victories of our
arms at New Orleans, lierfolk, Fort Pillow
and elsewhere have poured some new
. lighe
•
into the foreign minds.
One thing the country may rest assured of,
that the governioent will moot all threats or
tenders ofinterventionin the most determined
spirit. Friendly offers made in a sinners de
sire to adjust the civil troubles will he cons
teoasly considered, but any other will be sum
marily dismissed.
It is reported neon pretty good' authority,
-that President Lincoln has said that he mould
raise's', fresh army of a million of men, rather
than submit to any forcible intervention- If
be didnny so , ho only anticipated the univer
sal peottment of the people..
