of , a series of trials we?ncerintered in "riding

could have sworn it a : moment; ago-;.but now

. When woo- had accomplished half a mile we
overtook a party of noun. "Is this the road
to Corinth ?" queried . my companion.. . . "It's
one of them," replied one of the stoats, with a
peneptible, smile.. I expreseed my thankful
ness, and Teetered -to ask, "Well, where. is
the main road, 'then ?" "Off to. your left ;
you cut _around_ that hut, keep that field on,
your right, and'youll come to the main road'

"Oh I Lord I" groaned . : my companion, "I
verily believe we would haul up at Pittsburgh,
.landing every other half hour, if it was mot ,
for these eternal bogs and swamps and runs.
Have you your haversack, never be

days' rations." _
The above is a prat,' fair specimen of the
dialogues one oiertmen every day outside of
our camps. Every one gets lost, and every
one condemns the - country. . This was only
the third time for your correspondent, and he
was-almost used to'it. . Bat his companion,
whom he had enticed fromaamp, having only.
been lost Wee, (and then he was alone,)Made.
a wry fans over it. During a long silence,
which' was brokeri by the question at the be
ginning of this- letter, we bad etweeeded in
sliding off the rind and into a bje.path, and
out of that we landed in a bog. And here let
site inform yon Just where the Unionists are,
and what they here to encounter:
We have miserable roads, to begin with—
the vary wont roads in Pennsylvania an fine,
-tampered .1 With the nide we bniehere. The
161111iniftaddiek, loamy, and where we have
sand, if any, thing, it is worso than the , yield
ing hap. The roads themselves are mere
by.patll4Uniwerthy - ofai Wheelharrowar Mat,
Then, they are more than half covered with
trees, (of course the ground • there would al
ways, retain moisture,) and every half mile
you aradeaoress a bog; occasionally you non
a middling shed run, which is always_ sure to
swim - shone; then, these by-paths are tan
gled- up, eiidently to try the patience and
temper of every person whose fortune leads
him this way. The forest is so dense that it
is almost impossible to walk through it. ' In
the glades, of course a horseman can pick his
way, but the recurring:bogs, and the broad
swamps,: hold, infantry, cavalry- and artillery
at_ bay.., What is to be done? -Why. send:out
a..bngade, two, if. they are:needed, or three,
and fell loge and saplings. Makes regular
causeway; or, if you , era across the swamp,
and the hill is soft, make a corduroy road, no
matter if it 'hes to be a quarter, a half, or as
it is in some vases, a whole mile long. You
try to avoid these bogs, and you get lost for
your pains.. .
Now, notwitstanding all I have raid, ,the
landscape is not so bad; -possibly some one
unaccustomed to marches Might 1770110IIIICOit

Notwithstanding the combined ingenuity
of half a dozen brigades, I doubt if we eau
'donnas six tulles to-morrow. And yet Gies°
brigades • have been hard at work ever since
Bunday morning, making corduroy roads and
bridges, cutting out new roads, and repairing
old. I am not exaggerating; every one re
gards the obstacleilin the sumo light; if any
thing, I am under, rather than over estimat

the main road.
When we arrived at the main road, we met
Judge McCook and his eon Capt. Dan (As
sistant Adjutant-General 2d, Division,) *a

As my companion and I were only 'looking
around' we appeared to bo of Onamhad—wore
going the same way, and joined company.
The Judge (who is now aH. B. Paymaster)
had Ids • Henry zill• with him, a Mien
shooter, es it is usually termed. A senora
followed with.a basket, which was intended
to hold each eggs as might be purchased on
the road. I had often heard of that rifle, and
the Judges' love-of it; -now I could - see 'for
myself. We wont some' two miles farther oat
Own I had been the day:l-lost my reckoning;.
came up to the pickets, and then the outposts.
Here we fell in with Gen. Garfield. A short
rest, and we pushed on. A six pounder had
barked tilos since we left camp, and we were
,anxious to.know what it meant.
It so happened that Gen: Garfield's cavalry
brought in two_Prisonerewhile Neatens trav

interrogatelr—weisil iodiToiward to the out

in good keeping, and answered questions,
promptly. Fifteen of 'Gin. Garfield's men

Talk with' Beaureiard--Interesting
Narrative of the Battle of Shiloh.
Lieut. T. 11. Simmons, of the Illi ols 14th
regiment, relates to us the following interest
ing incident which occurred on the b the field
of Shiloh
. -
About 11 o'clock on 'Sunday, 6th o
April, Lieut. S. was Woutided, be g shot
through the left lung.- He 'lkas supposed to
be in a- dying condition, 'and ' was left on the
field by his 'companions. -- About 3 o'clock in
the afternoon of that_ ever-memorable day,
our forces hating been driven back-from-their
position, a Confederate officer of high rank,.
,and, his staff, came upon the ground . where
Lieut. Simmons lay. The rebel officer observ
ing him lying there, not yet dead, and from
his uniform taking hini to be aasion officer,
approached . him, when the followlhg converse- ,
tion ensued
The rebel officer asked 'Lieut. S. bow far .it.
:was to the Tennessee river. Lieut. 8. being
:too weak from the loss of blood to speak loud,
beckoned to him to come closer, and in a lower
tone replied, "Two miles -and a half." The
rebel officer shook his head doubtingly. Lieut.
S. observed it, and said to him: "You seem
to doubt my word. But you ace," he added,
pointing to his wound, "that I am dying, and
upon the word of a dying man, to the beet of
my judgment, it is two miles and a half to the
river." The rebel °Meer turned to convene
With his staff, and ordzlred his surgeon to give
the Lieutenant some stimulants. The sur

Which, revived 'him considerably. The con

overheard, wax about as follows :

drive Grant to so elose' quarter!' yet .. to-tiiglit

turned again to the Lieutenant - and:asked him
about Buell's forces—their -nuriber - - add Pi

remarked to him, "It's no matter how. far It
is to the river, we shall. whip you anyhow, -
anit force Gen. Giant to, surrender. to-night,
or early to-morrow morning; and - then cap
ture Buell, if he makes his appea.ranoe on the
field." Lieut. El, replied, "Yon Sr. not- so
certain of that. You have got' hard , fighting
to do before you capture our forme 'yet, and
North-Western freemen are 'not the craven
dogs to lie down after the first brush sand al
low themselves to be taken."; - "No matter,"
said the ofileer, "wo shall'-whip. you 1 Your
men won't fight." .. .
"Upon that..Stibjecfr.," said the, Idetiten - aut,.

were thrown 'into some confusion; but even

not fighting against the 'South; you .tannot

8., and I would dolt again." Do your peo
ple all feel ihat way?" asked the officer. ,
"Yes, sir," replied the Lieutenant.
The officer said no more, but with a sad look
mounted his horse and rode off. - One of the
rebel Officer's aids had dismounted to water his
-horse in a creek close by, and before remount

beckoned him to come to him;i-and asked him
"who that officer was ?" The aid said "that
is Gen. Beauregard." The Lieutenant, Imei
