By abolitionist alsehe does not mean mere

ions at would be sufEeient in order-that all
may have enough: •Thus eatables sell very
high, and the prices have an upward ten
dency. But the country around is rich and
fertile, and tobacco,' which -bee_ thus far
answered all purposes with the farmers,
will give place to corn, pork,: peas; potatoes
And other articles more easily digested than
the weed. -
Danville is a swill village in Pittsylva
nia 'county, Virginia, just on the North
Carolina line, about one hundred and
thirty miles, in a south-west direction, from
Richmond. It is the terminus of the Rich
mond and Danville llailroad. 'Davis is
constructing a railroad at this time, to con
nect with Greensboro, North Carolina, a
distance of about forty miles. This line is
not—yet. completed; if we may believe the
Richmond journals, 'and until it is, the
rebels have _really no way of retreat open
to them, out of - Virginia, for their_ army,
which they can move only by railroad;
Dun:uncles having cut them off from the
sea-board lines through North Carolina,
while Mitchel and our Generals in East
•
-Tennessee make the retreat westward if
not impossible, yet eiceedingly hazardous.
No doubt these considerations aggravate
the panic among the civilians at Richmond,
who are the more inclined to ran off, just
because all the avenues are stopped, as the
panic-stricken savings bank depositor ex
plained that if he could get his money be
did not want it.'; bfit if the bank could not
pay him, he must have it at once,
• What effect , this state of things may have
on the rebel army in Virginia, it is not
easy to know. The'distrust of the people
at Richmond shows sufficiently that not
much confidence is there felt in the army ;
and the violent and repeated assertions 'of
the journals that is the duty and interest
of the rebel leaders to defend Virginia to
the last, and stake their fate upon7the bat
tle at Yorktown, would seem to show that
Davis and his fellows are about to abandon
"poor old Virginia,' and, as the Richmond
Examiner says,_"attempt to _prolong a-no
madic existence at Montgomery."
WE wish to call the.attention.of the As
sociated Press to the' fact that the Cairo
news sent to this city on Saturday was
published in the Eastern and Western
pipers on Saturday morning. The news
of, the capture of For,t. Macon, whicliap
peered in the same papers on Friday morn
ing, was sent here on that day. The prose
of.this city pays its proportion for the news
telegraphed by the. Associated Press, and
has. a right to demand that it shall not be
overlooked in this shameless manner. The
instances above given are but a sample of
the inexcusable neglect constantly occur
ring, and we call upon - the Associated Press
to discover the parties in fault and furnish
a remedy.—Pittsburgh Dispatch of Monday.
Every wordof the above is justly deserv.:'

siznebody requires prompt looking after by

Doubtless the unfaithful party, whosoever
he km agreed to attend to the duties of
