The month of May is here, indeed, bet bow

said to be at least three weeks later than

Yesterday was a great (14 in this City,
among the colored people. They bad set it
apart Mia day etude's= thanksgiving to God,.
for the great boon he has pet it into thehearts
of the loyal people of the nation—a majority
of them at least—to return to them. All their

gift of th&Creator, it has at last In this small ,
patch of ten , miles . squads , been returned to
them. By a of simultinions movement,:
apparently, they have' derided about one'
week to the subject of congratulation with
each Other. These' rejoicings have been
mostly of a religion!! character. I have met
in this city, since -I hare been here--more
than eight months—but one intoxicated ne

On Thursday (last) evening an j l llolo/2/o'l

churches of colored people in this Districti
convened at Asbury Chapel, an excellent andi
commodious edifice owned by them.near the!
Capitol. The audience consisted of from 1200':
to 1500 people—there being, perhaps, a dozen,
white men present. The oxen:uses were open-I
ed with prayer by a white clergyman from!
Massachusetts, after which the whole audience!
joined in singing an' appropriate hymn.-_ Did:
any one ever hear sweeter voices than were;

which came with their new relations and're-I

expected of them ; that they should unite to
assist each other, educate their children and
show that they were worthy of the great booO
now in their hands. These remarks, and teeny
similar, were received with streaming eyes)
and exclamations of joy and thanks to God.
No one could Bee - this demonstration' of man- ,

_Several colored men addressed their people
in remarks ohameterised- by practical good
sense and abounding with wholesome advice.
It was proposed by one of these that acollectioO
should be taken then and there, for the aid
of the poor fugitives who daily reach this city

TO tell you that affairs 'on the Peninsula
were still in star. quo, would be simply re
peating what has already become an , every-.

only to thelrelative position of the two armies;
for, though seemingly Inactive, the entire

army has been 'occupied night , and . '
day, in
throwing up intrenchments and earthworks '
' of the most formidable character. When we
first came to- this place, - driving- the rebels
before us, it was Ori opinion of every one.
that we would be in action within three days.
Been on the first day of our - arrival, when:
about two - miles east of our present position,
an alarm was created by some skirmishing.
between 'the advance guard of ,Smith'if dill,'

after division, brigade after brigade, and reg

formed in' line of battle. We all felt certain'
of a' fight, but after - remaining ;
