courage of our men,_gives us a decided ad

and maintain the position, picking off their
gunners at every attempt to load or fire their

Try this way the alaughter of thivrebels has

Preparations for the Merrimac.
, The Fortress Monroe correspondent of the

the military and naval authoritiee here bad
'definite intelligence,of the intended visit of
the Merrimac to the Roads at no distant pe
riod, and pefore dark a dozen or more tug
boats'were busy towing the fleet of schooners
lying above the point out of harm's way, and
and there was every evidence that a warm re
ception was to be tendered to her if she would
accept it.
To-night the Roads are entirely clear of
every obstruction. The Monitor and Range
tuok,holding advanced positions, seem like
phantom monsters of the deep, ready to pounce
upon their prey. Both have steam up, and
are. every , way ready for action. Nor are,ire
unprepared on band. The ever-vigilant vote

the former- engagements are questioned and.
appealed to for opinions as to.the probable re

the Monitor's ability to manage and, perhaps,
sink the Virginia, aided by the:-Naugatuck."

that the rebels at Norfolk, fearing an attaok
upon 'that city, have obstructed the channel
of Elisabeth river with — russets, which are to
