SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL 26 Sketches from Eastern Virginia. An army correspondent of the Ohio &ate Jim mat, writing from Winchester, Va., gives us a few lively sketches of manners and pres ent opinions among the population, white and black, of that part of "Ole Viorginny TITS 'MEDIUM CLASS OP COMMUNITY The medium class remained stolid to abide the consequences, when our brave boys enter ed, led by splendid looking and highly edu cated ofileera, who marched to the inspiring airs of hail Columbia, Yankee Doodle, and the Red White and Blue. The, dear, delicate females, charmed by the old National airs, dared to look at the "cowardly . aasassins," and many were fascinated when . they heard the enchanting music of our Yankee Bands. The moat bloody stories were told to con trabands by their masters to cause them to bate Yankees. The niggard were informed that the Yankees were to sollthern "sandmen Smith," which threat their Ina/aura always use to enforce obedience. The darkies would rather go any where Ore than South, for there they expect Northern overseers, Who are said to be perfect demons. When these stories are told them they say, "yes Marna," and convey-the impression that they are deceived, yet they do not feel much uneasiness after all'when the most znarvelous yarns are told them in order to make them despise the Yankees. Our troops -have - bad every opportunity to take them, sell, or run them off, but nut a single instanee has oeear red on the track of our moving or standing army, to have anything to do or say to the "railed popdation." SENTIMENT GRADUALLY CUANGIRO I am most happy to state that each day pro duces a revolution in sentiment when applied to the "fair sex." Their bonnets do not wear that peculiar abused and subdued look they did a fortnight ago. They do condescend coca/sip' nail" to peas under the Stars and Stripes instead of around them. They now deign to hold up their beautiful beads, and their be witching eyes exchange glances with the horrid _Yankees. The uniform gentlemanly bearing of our officers, amid all the insults offered them, is producing- respect, and in some instances admiration, and even recog nition and invitations to call and spend the evening. A friend gave me an Instance where one of our officers was invited by a rampant seceah young Miss to her Pa's home. She was a fine performer and good singer. She voluntarily sung and played for this handsome Yankee officer the "Red White and Red." After she was through, he asked permission to play and sing a piece. Re being a good singer and en admirable poformer, he sang and played the "Star Spangled Banner." After the -first Terse was performed she was insensibly drawn towards the piano, and so enchanted was this secesh lady with he glorious old national air that shejoined in with a riyAtgooa will; they finished it with their sweet voices blending in harmony—and away down In the depth of their souls wee Mum She was no doubt eobfounded when else found that a Yankee could play as she, so she insisted on his re turning and-bringing his friends. I am-not positive that Floyd's Grand Gallops and Gen. Jackson's Masterly March into Winchester are yet set in music. I would suggest that the latter be set to the good old tune of "Wait • little longer." How TOO CONTRABANDS WCOO /RIGIITEZRD ON The derides flooked,to the almost deserted streets, showing the Yankees that the im pressions made, upon their minds. were not lasting. They grinned extensively, when Master and Old. Missus run away, and the re sult was a splendid display of Ivory, free gratis. 'They were visible on the corners of the streets, and In all :public...places, ..waving their cotton Bandannas and rejoicing "dat de good Lord" has at last sent "Old Master Abe Lb:ikon's army to set de riggers free," 'cording to Old Master and Mimic promise, and de stories of de newspapers from "de norf" what Master got his "infermation" Irons: iThis was a high day with the "culled population". of Old Virginity. They even followed the army through the streets, wait ing for "do mancipatien of niggers" to' coins off "immejently." But hdw soot they were disappointed when they found the mission of the army was not to catch and run off the niggere, but to find and bring to justice the runaway masters. Thesepoor deluded darkies felt that all hope for their.; deliverance -was now at an end, and saw at a glance how utter ly false tho promises of their Northern and Southern masters Wheat'. From ColuMbin, Tennessee The following letter, dated Columbia, Tenn., April 17th, contains some notice of a Pitts burgh General, and will be tend with interest. It is from a correspondent of the Chicago The Southern account of the great battle at Pittsburgh Landing is coming in verbally from a dozen different sources. Traveling is perfectly open to this point from Decatur, and persons daily arrive hero—parsons who say they amgoing North to remain, and who are perfectly willing to take the oath of allegi ance. I don't know but this taking the oath is becoming a grease? humbug than it was in the tire/months' service. 'note taking it pro fess to believe that the Constitution is broken and that it can be violated by thorn with im punity, and have no hesitation in so express ing themselves, and, in some eases, in viola ting the oath. "Example!" have been want ing in this war—very much so. The spy sys tem is practiced with impunity, and no hang ing as we 'did in the revolution—no exam ples. The two horses and baggage of a spy were captured a few days since, but Gen eral Negley had to content himself with 2onfigesting the team, and making the best use he could of the letters captured I think if he had been' allotted to act on his own judgment, he would have hung the man, and made an example, but this could not be done Without the sanction of General nalleek, who bas a great fault, and that,is too great a leniency. He desires, in my mind, to conciliate too louch, and in the Post Com mandant at this point he finds a fit person to carry out his views. Ido not mean, and do not wish to be understood as saying, thatOen. Negley holds the same views that Gen. Mat lack and Gen. McClellan do. On the °entail, give him the power and. I think he would wage the war to brink It home to those who have created and enpported it. Bat with' all this, he is an officer who obeys to the letter, and Gen. Helleek's polloyis consequently fol lowed by Gen.-Negley in the administratiOn of affairs at this point. He has done it Linnets& quiet,:gentleircinly manner that ho .hasalnade himself popular with all classes. A number of soldiers got drunk a few days shims; 'and broke into a house near the camp, destroying a large 'amount of furniture, ite. The man came to the General and complained that they had "done him ,mighty bad," "skeered the women," and "broke' his dishei." 'The Gen eral told him to namethe amount it(' damage done, and it should be paid. The 'Simonet named was $l5O-tbree times the 441110 of . the articles broken. General Negleyiediately sent for the man who had sold the li nor, and stating the case to him, ordered h to pay the man who had been "done mighty ad" the al sum named. The distiller did so, an, offered South Carolina money, which the damaged in dividual refused to take:: The distillers, for ten miles around, have sent in individuals to ,gli them security that they won't sell a drop of liquor to tfiriaoldiers. The ease of the spy's baggage and horses came up a day or two after they were captured. They were owned by a firm keeping a publkestable. One of the own ers was a Union man, and claimed the pro perty. Gen. Negley decided that the other partner—a secessionist—should pay the Union prtner his share in the property, and die. mieeed the case. Them are instances of wis dom as sensible as was Solomon's. Suffering and Deatittitionin Ireland. Dr. Brodie, the.lrish poor law inspector, who was detailed in February last to proceed on - board hat Majesty's ship Geyser, to the islandaon the western collet of Ireland, to re port th o nditien of the inhabitants, has made ap ' rt, which, though evidently care less and u rficial, reveals some painful de tails. t - nnis Boffin Island be found that the diet Of the people consisted entirely of ~,, Indian Die, cooked with nprith and the dried surface, of the bogs. Very little potatoes were found, and unless some be supplied for seed the distress neat year asset be greater even than at preset. There witaitht a-bit of ha ker's bread, a drop of milk be a pound of meat on the .islands. The people had no store of 1 provisions' to fall back upon, and were likely to suffer great privation. At Shark Island the people were almost identically eircum- staneod—that is, on the verge of starvation. The population of Clare Island numbers 900, and a portion of them are in great want of provisions, and there is a deficiency of seed potatoes fur planting. The Weather was so bad, says the Doctor, that he could not visit Actin, Inniskes, or the Arran Islands, and so the matter rests so far as the English govern ment Is concerned, but private charity will no doubt step G and render some aid, though it may be somewhat insufficient and precarious. , A painful , and terrible illustration of the effects of the landlord evil that depopulated Ireland is given in a recent letter from Con nemara, Cour4 Galway, by the 110 n. Denis Caulfield Her n to the Lord Mayor of Dublin. Ile says that the population of onnstone in a thountainnountry„ but withvall 5 contain ing the richest grazing land in Ir land, eon . , aistsof over 500 families. in the est ofilmes these people sttbsist on potatoes °kid with. turf. The Mexican Question. The Paris correspondent of the London Thee. writes thus on the present aspect of the Malan question : "A Spanish ministerial paper, the Correa , - pondcema, of Madrid, says it is.authOriied to annouioe that the government has no inten tion of concluding a fresh treaty with France on the iatlisirs of Mexico, but it adds it is quite possible the: cabinets of Paris, London and Madrid will concert together with a view of making certain clauses of the convention more explicit. This lest sentence is explained by the fact that the Spanish government has in timated to the Freud' that it would have no objection to a conference, for the purpose of removibg any obscurity in the present 'stipu lation, and that the French government has declined the proposal, on the 'ground that it •was I not necessary, Admiral Jurien de La Graviere has not only been instructed to confinehimself to his duties as commander of the squadron, but has been informed in (I be lieve) • nod official latter, -that if he thinks proper to return,lo Fisincehe is at liberti to do so. I had a conversation this mornin at Wil lard's with Cyrus W. Field, Esq., n which he mentioned some facts that I think have not been put before thepublie in so - condensed a form, at least not lately.. He said that on conversing with various grain merchants in England, he found that they sent very few orders bore to what they would do if there were telegraphic communication between Eng land and the United States, for this reason. They can telegraph to their agents at Odessa to purchase a cargo and by afternoOn of the same day can receive advices of the purchase; and thus be enabled to otter the same for sale on arrival. Or that - the purchase cannot be made at the limit fixed and .act accordingly. But if they seek to make a similar operation at Chicago, they must wait a : month or five. weeks fora reply, which perhaps je that prices, rule a fraction too high forthe limit' assigned to the agent. And all that time their capital lies unemployed. I am not One Of, the .ean guine ones - on the - subject of preserving - the continuity , of a cable through the Atlantic ocean, but it is impossible not to see the ins.: mense-benefit which it would be to the United States. One of the advantages would be that above mentioned, and it would also put us in communication by telegraph with every capi;-. tal in Europe, and with all the principal nitres of Europe,_ nd with all the important .plattes even in Africa and Asia: Mr. 'Field speaks in the highist terms of the disposition ihown in the matter by the English government.— Correrpondent N.
