with the threatening and scowling looks of

selves at the windiiwir of their houses, to
which Gen. Michell had ordered them, had
pretty thoroughly angered tia against them,
and nothing would bare pleased ourboys bet

Col. Turchin's bated° and Simonson's 'bat
tery started from Paytitteiillo at 6 o'clock a.
m. on Thursday, mut merehuidiligently until
9 p. m. ' which brought them to within eleven
miles of Huntsville. Colonel Sill's brigade,
with Loomis' famous battery, followed
closely, the other brigades at a distance.
It wee worth the looking to see Captain
Loomis' battery move over there roads.
Neither mud, nor rocks. nor bills delayed
them, but calmly, smoothly, majestically they
moved forward, a real impersonation of power.
I was convinced, by observing them, of how
much can be accomplished by foresight and
care. The boner:tor this battery were se-

lected mainly by Loomis himself, with great
discrimination, and not one was admitted
whist' was in the sligatest degree weak or un
sound. Ile has lost but two or three horses
during the entire war.
The road: improved after this, and were
quite tolerable the remainder of the way.
PILICES
An advance force of one hundred and fifty
cavalry, together with a section of the battery,
in charge of Capt. Simonson himself; assisted
by Lieut. H. Allen,
commanding the section,
the whole directed by Colonel Kennett, first
caught sight of Huntsville, and the lovely
cedar surrounding it.
Three cavalry men rnzhed into the town,
found a large number of rebel soldiers sleeping
in and around a number of ears, and actually
made prisoners of one hundred and seventy
men, including& major, six cepteies and three
lieutenants. The most of these fellows be
longed to the Ninth LOUiSiliDa regiment, and
were on their way to join it in Virginia. Tho
majors name was Cavanaugh._ Hb regiment
did not all re-enlist when their time of service
(one year) expirtd„and he had been home for
recruits. He had succeeded in obtaining a
hundred and forty, and wu taking them to
the Old Dominion ' to fill up the ranks of his'
regiment. Whertho found both. himself and
his recruits were prisoner, in the beetle atilt)
Yankees, his mortification 11.1111 visibly ex
pressed all over his countenance.
Mee our troops advanced into the town,
they found they had made a prize of teventiew
kwoinotioes, (sixteen of them- in fine running
order,) and about a hundred and fifty ears,
passenger and freight. I Isbell not attempt to
enumerate the other articles captured,:and
your readers may estimate the value of the
rolling stock.
DSC*II.II OCCITPULD. -
Decatur was first occupied by the Twenty- ;
Fourth, end two companies of the Nineteenth
Illinois regiments, which, with a portion of
Sil32o[lloll'S battery, loft Huntsville on a train ,
of ears, Saturday morning last, recovered a
piece of cannon - which had beau lost the night
before, and prooeeded onward to the Tennessee
river. One object of the expedition was to
'burn the bridge over the Tennessee at Deca
tur, in order to prevent oar being assailed by
a force from the neighborhood of Corinth.
But the fight near that place on Monday had
rendered the rebels as fearful of an approach
from the east se wo were of a movement from
the west; so that when Colonels Turchin and
Kennett, who commanded the expedition, ar
rived at the bridge, they found, that it had
been fired by the rebels themselves.'
Deciding instinctively that it was always
proper to do just opposite of whit these scoun
drels were about our ' leader, wisely deter
mined, instead riburning the bridge, to put
out the flames which the rebels had already
kindled. Thls was done in a twinkling; and
our gallant fellows, hers* and toot, rushed
through the town to assail a body of mounted
rebels whom they understood were encamped
there. But the bird was flown. Colonel Bell;
with a battalion -of cavalry, had teen there,

The two steamers quickly lot go their hold on
the Congress end moved out, of range, having
undoubtedly received great logs and damage.
They soon came back, accompanied •by a
launch filled with men ; but the gunners and
riflemen again beet them off., .
"The Merrimac, finding her prize retaken,
now approached and fired three hot shot into
her, and then withdrew to the other side of
the river. The Congress was soon ablaze.
The men remaining , aboard of her escaped
over her bows, and before dark the wounded
- were takelsont. It wag not until two o'clock,
in the morning that the burning frigate's
magazine exploded. Before this, at intervals
during the night, her 54 abetted guns went
off. One of them sent a ball through a sehoen
er at the nearest wharf, and sunk her.
Throughout the , day my . whole force was
under arms, and my officers and man were en
gaged in the batteries and on the beach.
Wherever we bad a show of a chance at any
thing not covered with twelve inches or six
Inches of iron, our brave men whipped the
rebels, and drove them off. Strange to say,
not one of my command wan killed, and but
one was wounded—a private of the 7th New
York, who lost a leg.
"It would have been utterly impossible, Sir,
to have nailed the fate of the two war-ships.
The superiority of the Merrimac over both,
was as decided, as iron is decidedly stronger
than wood."
.
During this conversation glanced from
time to time with interest at the evidence of
the passage of a shot through the room in
which Gen. Mansfield was sitting. Be had
indeed a narrow escape. Be had entered his
quarters and sat down at hie table to write a
telegraphic dispatch. While lifting his pen, a
shell from the Merrimac dashed through the
side of his loom opposite his chair ; made
tooth-picks of a large black walnut clothes
press ; penetrated with • clean cut the mantle
piece ; carried away about a quarter ofa brick
chimney, and went howling off over the camp.
The General was seated only four. foot from
the track of this projectile, and wad showered
with its passing compliments of splinters and
dust. Bet bears a charmed life here, as at
Fort Brown, Monterey and. Buena Vista.
To return to the Cumberland. She was
"bunted" on her starboard bow as she lay at
anchor. The Merrimac did not recoil, and ,
was not permitted by her engineer to recoil
from the shock. The Cumberland was driven
bath by it till brought up by the full strain I
upon her cable. Than, the Merrimao stiff
pressing upon and goriag into her with her iron
horn, the frigate heeled over to larboard, and,
it is supposed, received the fatal, crushing
wound, into which the sea rushed. Let nauti
cal men make a note of this.
• The loss of life which ensued was partly
„due to the battering down of all the hatches
save that leading -to the cockpit-customary
caution on til4/13-1.0611ar prior. to going 111t0/113-
tion. AmOng,the incidents of the wreck, new
to me, I wee told to-diy that before the Mer
rims° backed off from the Cumberland two of
the crew - of .the latter jumped for safety upon
the ram's lion roof—and instantly slid Off into
the Water. It had bean thoroughly /dashed
with grease.
.Just before she went down the
Cumberland's men yet on. her decks took re
fuge in the rigging. Gen. Mansfield sent or-.
dens to the Captain of the propeller Weldon,
lying at the dock, to run out and rescue them.
Ile refused to do it, saying that he would be
sunk or taken. The General took short
method with the coward. Ile threatened to
shoot him if he did not immediately slip his
hawser and save those men. The fellow ran
out and brought away every one of them. .
In .the bight. of the, fire of the batteries
upon the, Merrimac her flag staff was shot
away. A' trap door 'was opened in her Iron
roof, and a man,emerged and-began moving a
straddle of the ridge toward the socket of the
staff. A rifled cannon shotstruck him in the
side and tore him utterly to pieces. A fate as
mortal, overtook an _officer from either the
Yorktown_ or Jameshawn, who hurried to carry
away our flag-from the ,Corigniss. Ile had it
