ADV.ERTISING AT HEAAIONABLIC H&179 FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL 18. Disloyalty at Nashville. We have conversed with several gentlemen who have visited Nashville since its occupa tion by Federal troops, - )ind they all unite in asserting that Nashville is a alloys! city. Very little Influential Linton feeling is found there. The people are sullen, refuse to do business, and secession sympathies areopenly avowed. If oar army pas removed, or if it met with any severe rerimse, Nashville would again rise in rebellion..; These facts are confirmed by every letter from that quarter. Even conspiracies are feared. A letter to the Cincinnati Gautte, dated Nashville, Aprill4, says ♦ C4I3PIHACT. Late Satardayeveg. oneJamer T. Bel a little Scotehmen, hwho was the local editor and one of the prati r etors of the Nashville ze Doily Gattg , was sated in this city, and conveyed by the Provost Guard to the peni tentiary, for sedltioils language and probable connection with midnight conspiracy. The fact which led to his arreat was, that he' up preached a man whosellentiments be bed mis aprehended, and infoimed hitueonfidehtially that, at midnight rday, the bit Y bells would be rung sea slajial, and the Caton man "cleaned out.' if one of the City Council who refused to take the oath of alle giance, by the advice of W. F. ;Cooper, Esq.. Though the man is light material, and 'would hardly be entrusted with the deep secrets 'of a serious conspiray, 'the Prevost Marshal, did well in putting out an extra guard, and pa trolling the streets with cavalry , and infan try all night. Mei were not permitted on any pretlxt, to assemble in groups on; the streets. IL is not impossible, there Was more import in language than our MU tens who know ban are willing to believe. Straws may chow the current of the, wind Certainly, if theSecoasionists of Nashville had not entered into the, atrecious conspiracy he divulged, it was only for leek of courage, and not becalm) they havenot the will. Butif the' conspiracy had bean one to pick the pecklits of all the Union men in the city and commit Vio lence on tho corpses of the Federal soldiers in the cemetery, I should regard it with more credulity. Lot no one misunderstand :me. Undoubtedly they would assassinate loyal people ; but it is herd to believe they Would ring bells fora signal. The noise inightewake their intended victims. The thieveer.had; not even the courage to lhok honest meet leU the face on the street, but bore gimlet holesin the pavement with theirhang-dog eyes. An insurrection of traitors in Nashville would have a most= healthful influence.. It would bring on sourd'ofAhatiost severity, for want of • which out political atwospheto is breeding pestilence. I committed an error in ono . or my feriaer letters when I stated that Ocientl wasWashing t ton Barrow Won ro . doh parole. On inquiry I learn James Bell was charged with printing A false report of the battle of Pittsburgh, fur the purpose of encouraging seditious feeling, and secretly circulating it. One James, a writer of the Banner, who claims to have been in former• days connected With the New York Sfirit of the Time., was iiiso arrested, on suspicion of connection with; the outer, matter, and lodged with Bell in the pen itentiary. The Slave Trade. The Committee on Foreign itelatiensy to which had been referred the treaty beteleen Groat Britain and the • United States for' the suppression of the slate trade, reported it back with amendment, and with the favora ble indorsement eLthe Committee. It is: the opinion that this treaty will receive- -the prompt sanction of the ,fuli Senate, and be forthwith forwarded to England, to be ratified by that Government. • It is supposed that this treaty has been made with the object of facilitating the Sup pression)of the slavetrade. Heretofore tour treaties don the subject, owing to the jealousy of slavehlders in the Cabinet and Sonia°, have not Iron of the character but calculated for the objactintended. We trust now that this nefarious traffic will be ended forever. NomidatiOns Confirmed. The Senate, in Executive Scutari, on TllOl5- day,-Confirnied Gov. E. D. Petersburg ia therAtionner of 4day 7. The /kr;ild'it` The Neits from Nashville. The -news from Nashville is not encour aging. Our special correspondent, who, from his long residence in Kentucky and Tennes see, is well qualified to form an opinion, says That there are few loyal men in the Western and Central parts of the latter State. Those who resisted secession the longest, and who sacrificed the most for their Union principles, are now our Largest enemies, declaring daily that when out-now victorious forces are has tening back through Nashville, after the de feat which the rebels say is impending, they will fire 'upon them from their houses, and in whatever way they can, urge on the work of extermination. He says that the withdrawal 'of the troops would be the signal for another insurrection, and that •the toting to be held must be garrisoned by our loyal men. This does not accord with what Parson Browniow preaches and what governor Johnson hopes, but It is in strict accordance with the results of hundreds of observations that Northern mon have made. We have no doubt that our informant re flects what he believes, and that his opinions are in the main correct. And hoW mmoh so aver we may wish to pin our faith to the two Union men whom we have named, we are compelled to judge of Tennessee not so much by what they say, as by the analogies which the triumphs of our arms elsewhere have de veloped. It is a rule that slavery and loyalty do not go together; that wherever the former is strong, the latter is weak and powerless or wholly wanting. Tennessee, in the neighbor hoot.of Nashville, is no exception to what is elsewhere true. The well-founded. fear of what has happened may have deterred far seeing men from embarking is what they fore saw would be a failure; henco the progress of secession was slow. The virus was there, however. Nashville divided with Memphis . the doubtful honor of being the centre of the alaveholding aristocracy of the State. What then ' is to be done ? - From the be ginning we have had but one opinion. The cause of the war most be struck. Slavery must go down I At least, the slaves of the rebels, the objects. for which they prolong the strife, the precious treasures which give such venom and fury to disloyal andelor, must be net free I We care not how, whether by proclamation of the. President, or by a con fiscation law comprehensive in its terms and energetic in its operation. Not only at Meth villa, but in all other pleats in all the rebel lious States, the work of liberation must com mence and be fai!hfully carried on—roust com mence while yet the country has the financial strength to carry out the policy that necessity will by and by compel it to inaugurate. Hes itation is criminal because it is dangerous, Imperilling the unity if not the very life of the Republic. Sharpen the axe and let it fall! Slavery is loathsome and contaminating. Freedom or it mist die; and before the end of this campaign, the people will be compelled to,choose one of the two to doom to death. We know which will be destroyed I—Chicago Tribune. Another Rebel Stand on the RiTer. • A letter from Cairo, dated April l4th, to the Cincinnati Gazette, say, I have just boon placed in possession of some valuable informationrelative to matters below. .Two-ciesertere from the rebel army arrived at New Madrid a day or two ago, and report that another stand will he made by the 'insurgents at Fort Pillow, sixty miles above •Memphis. Fort Randolph, twelve miles be low Fort Pillow, where the rebels once thought of making a stand in case they were repulsed at the latter place, has been virtually aban doned. It is said by them deserters—and our spies substantially confirm all they report —that there are about 3,000 men at Fort Pil low. Only twenty guns are mounted oh the fort, must of them old culumbiatis. (This is doubtless an error.] There are several wfiter liatteries; extending for half a mile above , the tort, end two midway up the bluff. The works .on,itheirnmenit axe, prepared with the same engineering skill that characterised those at Henry, DOneltion, Columbus and Island NO: 10. But since all these have fallen into our hands, who can doubt the result of Fort Pillow. A HAW MUSA'. 111[1,1iBAL The rebels at Fort Pillow are commanded by Cenercil Villipigue, a man unknown to fame, but said to be a very accompliehed offi cer, and ono in whom they have great con fidence. .lle is a Creole gentleman, and al though untried, is believed to be ■ second Beauregaid. Nous verrono. PRRPARATIONH FOR A FORWARD ROVRRRNT There can be no impropriety, I think, in my stating that a largo fleet of transports left St. Louis last night for New Madrid. With these General Popo proposes to move his army down the river, in company with the gunboats; and then, if the rebels will only stand, we may soon expect to have three thousand prisoneis more, and tielast serious impediment in our way to Memphis and New Orleans will' be removed. I ant inclined to tho belief that the resistance to our progress at Fort Pillow will be feeble. The movement upon the fort, I learn from a seml-offiiial source, is to be made immediately. I leave to join the fleet the first opportunity. East Tennessee. •r from Nashville, of the 14th inst History will giva East Tennessee a mar tyr's crown. The 'rebellion has poured upon her head the dregs of its poisonous cauldron. White other sections have been delivered, and have trampled the jewel of deliverance under their feet like swine, devoted, enduring East Tennessee suffers, and, like Israel in captivity, is well nigh ready to despair under the 'op pressor'S band. It would seem that whom this Government loveth it suffereth to be dbas toned, for it must - love East Tennessee. ... . I convened with an intelligent young gen tleman who left Knoxville just one weekprior to last Friday. While be breathes the deep est and most uncompromising hostility to the enemies of tho nation, every word, look, and gootnre•is full of the crushing despondency which line like an incubue.on the bosom of hie neglected section. To him. the impudenoo and Reunite of rebels, who go about the streets of Nashville, are ineomprebeniible. Between twenty-Bro and thirty...loyal men left their homes in company with him, but only shout thirteen continued till they got without ;the rebel lines. A Kentucky Gentleman Posed During the debate, in the Hou..le, on the bill to abolish slavery in the Dietriet, the following scene took place: Mr. Wadsworth denoutuied the l Republi cans as about to steal the property.(!) which the inhabitants of the District had toiled for, upon which Mr. Lovejoy related this incident, of which he had the proofs in his hand. A free colored man in the District married a woman who was a slave, and by her hada child. He entered into an agree ment with the master to pay him $l,lOO for their freedom, which, after years of toil, he accomplished. But the colored man, by the laws of slavery, was not a competent witness to prove the contracts, and the wretch who "owned" his wife re pudiated it, after he had received the stip ulated sum. When the success of the Emancipation bill became apparent, this womenand her child—this wife and mother, redeemed, but still enthralled—were sent to Maryland, and are now actually in a slave-pen in Baltimore, awaiting a pur chaser. "What," said Mr. Lovejoy, "what does the gentleman from Kentucky call this? Is this stealing, or what is it?" The "gentleman from Kentucky" made no reply. The free discussion and ventilation of this subject, I may say here, have brought to light multitudes of instances of enormity as great as that involved in the circum stance related with so much effect by Mr. Lovejoy. I could fill pages with similar instances with which I have become ac quainted. Doubtless they are of similar frequency all over the South, Southern men have often accused us of the North of ex aggerating the evils and miseries connect.. ed with slavery. But from the develop ments in the District; it is my deliberate conviction, that, as the light of liberty is let in upon the great prison -house of hu manity, the South, we shall find that never. half its horrors have been told. It can not be 'otherwise: cupidity, selfishness and indolence are all enlisted against unpro tected weakness. Justice, in all the South ern States, as a necessity, is deal' to the negro. There is no Press to blazon his wrongs. Individuals can only alleviate, not remedy, them_ Where all are partak ers of the fruits of violence, it does not do to examine too nicely iuto outrages, the complete punishment of which would in volve destruction of the system itself, out of which they grow. Late from Pittsburgh Landing, The Chicago Tribune learns from a gentle man who left Pittsburgh - Landing on Sunday last, the following facts : The season at Pittsburgh is mild, the forest trees in full leaf, the gardenagreen and luxu riant. The rain falls arefrequent and heavy, the whole country drenched, and the laud heavy and deep. This latter cause in the vi cinity of the late battle 110141 greatly retards the burial of the dead, and many bodies are still exptised, awaiting'these sad offices. A ride over the late battle field is sickening and sad. Dead bodies stark and still lie In every conceivable position, distorted in the death agony, or stretched out with faces star ing upward, washed by the pitiless rain. llore and there are limbs torn away by shot and shell, or cast aside in the hasty field offi ces of the surgeon. Dead horses lie scattered over the ground. The air is heavy and taint ed with odors of 'decomposition. The traces of the late mortal struggle are abundant, :the ground ploughed and torn, and the forest trees broken and rent to shreds by the plung ing missiles. It will take years to efface. the marks of this combat. Gen. Hatleck arrived on Saturday night, and has &seamed command. lie received a ea lute of artillery on Sunday morning. There ,was, front appearances up to Sunday. no pros pect of immediate operations. 11oth armies are terribly handled and eat up, and it Will require days, and even ireeks, could' the latter he granted, to bring the regiments-hack into condition. The lapse' of time does nothing to lesion or modify- the cad reality of the late battle, which colt the Federal army ten thous and effective troop,. Blame, wgked and infa mous, belongs to the officer or officers respon • Bible for the great calamity, and the blow should fall on the guilty party. The Emancipation Bill Signed--Br Lincoln's Glorious Position. WASHINGTON, April 16, 11 o'clock.—Tho hearts of all the friends of freedom are re joiced by the report just made current that Mr. Lincoln has signed the bill for the eman cipation of the blacks of this District. True to hie instincts, true to his noble principles, true to the benevolent policy which his mes sage recently inaugurated, be has .put his name to the great . act which carries joy to thousands upon thousands of homes and hearts. If our cannons roar out the glorious triamphs of the battle.fleld, surely they should .announce this triumph with double thunders of sound. Mr. Lincoln has not hesitated In aMxing his name to the charter which brings liberty to so many because he had any, doubts of the propriety or the justice of the measure, but swiftly in obedience to his habitual just-mind educes. lie does nothing hastily;. he is dis posed to hoar arguments on all sides.; and for the last two days ho has listened patiently to the objections of those who were interested in the retention of slavery. The Border State men have said all they eouldsay ; the Presi dent has given mature consideration to their words, but he decides,at last, that he is un able to stain his fair ame with the reproach that he had been the obstacle to the groat work of the day. Even if the President had withheld, his nameTrom the bill, there were votes enough in Congress to pass it over his head; but he preferred to attach the "Abraham Lincoln" to a measure which wilt reflect each lasting boner upon him and his administration.
