The Naval Engagement at Fortress
Monroe.
' It is impossible to overrate the importance
of the lesson contained in the inoldente df
the late lea-fight between the Federal and
Confederate squidiens. In this unexpected
,and unparalleled engagement we get the first
real glimpse of a new !system of naval war
fare, and it will be our own fault if we do
net profit b the instrnotion afforded. It is
clear, bower . r, that neither the Merrimac nor
- the-Monitor ti be exactly measured against
;our own prod odor's. .It does not appear, for
.instance, that either 'of these vessels could
pin to aea, or Venture far from land, whereon
.oar own Warrior, at will have been seen from
Capt. Cochran's report' in our impression of .
yesterday, is fit for active service in any part
of the world. Still there are point/ of great
interest involved in the comparison. Both
the American vessels have sloping sides, or if
the Monitor's sides are not net at an angle
they are so'low as to afar little mark for shot.
',The Anierierine, therefore, seem to rely upon
_the protection obtained by this expedient,
whores/tie have not yet adopted it, and, in
deed;the "Iron Plate Committee" . of the In
stitution of Naval Architects have jut de
clared their conclusion, - that "angulated
sides possess no rail adiantage as com
pared with the usual upright sides."
ar o t one - objection which was urged against
eloping sides • has not been sapported by the
eipertenoe or the late .aetions. It was plena
bly said that & ship acting like a ram might
run over one of these low vessels with the
greatest ease ;, but the Merrimac did strike
the Monitor wittiont.any such result. An
other notable pointis suggested b the arma-.
mints wf the two vessels. The Monitor bad
two guns only, but each of them gunit was
nearly testes as largess one d f the Merrlieao'i,

The Seige of Yorktown--Ineidents.
A letter to the New York Earning Post, from
'
Yorktown, sap:
While coming home from a scout this fore
noon we called at a house and found a couple
of ladies, quite young, and one as handsome
as Hobe. They were secesh to the "back
bone," and bad each is."loreyer" in the rebel
army ; one of them wallet Yorktown, and only
left the day before to pick his way back
along the York river, awl carry such informa
tion as he had gotten from as. The young
lady showed us his photograph, a good-look
ing lieutenant, and hoped we should meet him
face to face, that he might leave us for dead:
"Oh," said she, "if all the Yankees were one
man and I had a-sword here, I shoulli like to
cut his throat. l"
And she said it with a vim, too. We told
_her we would take good care of young Lieut.
White, and see that Miss Florili had an op
portunity to change her name after the battle
was over, hoping for an invitation to the wed
ding, and as she had celled me the "Divine,"
chaplain of the regiment, I proposed to marry
them.
,! Never , " said she. " I hope he, will come
home dead before you shall take Yorktown.
I would wade in blood up to my knees to bury
his body."
She spoke of poison in a glass of water we
drank, but I replied that " one loot of her
angel face; ens smile from her lovely features
would be an antidote to the rankest poison."
" Yes," she replied, " and to your hatred of
the South too ?"
The flirtation nearly made her in favor of
Union and no the more so. But we had not
gone farlwhen-we observed a company of sol
diers approaching, who brought with them
the " loryer" a corpse upon a litter, returning
to his sweetheart. Ile had been shot while
trying to avoid the quick eye of our sharp
shooters, near, a house upon the York river
shore, where hie father had resided, and where
a - egro informed the soldiers that his mother
till sister were at the house where we had
been in conversation with the ladies, one of
whom was his sister, and our soldiers "had,
after receiving orders, carried him to be
buried.
We did not mar the sorrow of the relatives
by stopping to witness the reception of the
body.
This morning a rebel threw down his gun,
when finding himself too near to escape, and
song out "deserter," but It came too tate, a
ball went completely through his heart. •
Nothing of great interest has transpired to
day. All is: &Met, except the preparation of
roads, collecting ,of ammunition, and
,burry
ing up of artillery and siege guns. ,
At six o'clock last evening the rebels said
to our pickets that they would_stisp firing if
we would, and a few hours' quiet was the re
sult.. They mem anxious to stave off the en
counter.
A deserter ' wounded while coming in, and
now In our h ospital, says our sharkshooters•
are theprincipal terror of the rebels,- having
picked off a very large number of their gun
ners—killed seventy-six in all and wounded
nearly two hundred. He states that they lost,
thirteen on the tight on Saturday, and thirty—
six wounded. Seven of our men were wound
ed yesterday.
As I close and the post is just leaving, a
few shells are coming uncomfortably near our
,headquarters, and a few hurried orders from
Monona Porter indicate a skirmish.
