The Disposition of Gen• BuelPs Army
Previous tothe Battle of Pittsburgh
Landing.
, .
The following extract of a letterfrom the
"North bank of Duck -river,;' March 28, to
the New Tribuiie, gives is the best
_ . .
account we have seen of the disposition of
Gen. Buell's army, previous to the battle:
And first let me give your readers an idea
of , ,the distribution of the several, parts of
Gen: Buell's' immense ferce up to tho pres
ent time. Since the occupation of .Nash
ville, the • six old -divisions, respectiiely
commanded by- Genet McCook, Nelson,
Mitchell, -Thomas, nden, and Wood,
have -been more equalized in point of num
bers, and they all consist now of four bri
gades'of infantry and a corresponding com
plement of cavalry and artillery each. A
new one has furtherniore been organized
under command of Gen.Negley, to consti
tute the reserve. The .location of the sev
eral divisions until yesterday was as fol
lows : That of Gen. Mitchell was at Mur
freesboro', on the direct road to Chattanoo
so ; those of Generals ;McCook, Nelson,
Crittenden, and Thomas were encamped on
the Columbia road, on and between Ruther
ford creek and Duck river; and were joined
on the-day before yesterday by General
Wood's and Gen. Negley's which, during
the last week, remained in the suburbs of
Nashville.
Yesterday morning the bridge over Duck
River was so far completed as to permit the
crossing of- troops, and ever since an inces
sant stream of infrntry; cavalry, artillery
and baggage - and supply trains has been
passing over it. _ Although Gin. McCook's
had held the advance, it did not cross first;
but three of-the divisions; nearer to Frank
lin will pass ahead of it, in the following
order: First, Gen. Thomas', next Gems.
Nelson's and Crittenden's. By to-morrow
night these three will bo 'across, and Mc-
Cook's will then follow.
About a week ago, it was determined be
tween _Gene. Halleck, Buell and Grant, that
the main body of the army in Middle Ten
-110500 should form a jtutetion with the for
ae already collected under Gen. Grant, on
the West bank of the 'Tennessee, between
Purdy and Savannah, and hence .the divis
iorie of. Gen. Thomas, Nelson, McCook, and
Crittenden are turning to the right of Co
lumbia, and will march via Mount Pleas
ant and Waynesboro to Savannah, when
they will cross the Tennessee and unite
with Gen. Grant's com and. The remain
der of Gen. Buell's a y, 1 believe, , will
ei,
not undertake any off sire operations un
til after the forces to be united near Ela
ittnnalt have disposed of , the rebels_ in
their - front: Gen. hlitchelTi diviaions will,
perhaps, advance to 'Shelbyville, but no
further:. Gen:Wood'e . Will remain at Co
lumbia to keep the'comniunication between
Nashville and Savannah,. and 'Negley's re
serve will oontirtne at Nashville. This dis
tribution of forces will prevent rebel de
monstrations upon Middle' Tennessee not
withstanding the, withdrawal of four di
visions into Western Tennessee will be
prevented. '
The same t writer says that Gen. Grant's
army numbered 60,000, and Gen. Buell's4o,ooo, making 100,000 men.
Arming Negroes.
The New Trot Times, and other papers
'of the same class, have exhausted the lan
guage in the vehemence of their condem
nation of - the policy of army negroes.
How estonished will the reader be then, to
read the following argument from that
paper, in favor of arming the blacks, and
placing them in garrisons in the fkluthern
States. "Consistency thou art a. jewel."
The New TOrk nem, of last Wednesday,
says: • •
Monis son Gmraisos PUTT.—The Sec
retary of War, with provident eye to the
bests of Summer, and the necessity of
holding forts and arsenals in places where
the yellow fever demon will enlist, for three
or four months, on tha side of the rebels,
his, we axe told, conceived the, possibility
of using negro eoldiery for garrison duty..
The blacks, thoroughly acclimated, will be
saved, from the risks of climate; while
in the well defined limit -of fortifications
they will be restrained from the commis
sion of those revengeful excesses which are
the bug-a-boos of Southern people. And,
indeed, wehardly why so much care
should be taken of those same Southern
nerves, seeing the merciless readiness of
the rebels to turn upon us the Indian
savages of the Southwest. But thereis an
argument for the use of the negro troops
sufficient to acquit Mr. Stanton of sympa
thy with Garrison Abolitionism. Experi
ence proves the blacks to have rare. merit
in the handling of artillery. Both in the
British and American service has this'ex
cellence been noted. They are proof to
the heat and smoke of the casemate, unen-,
durable by whites in warm climates, while
the ador of their labor and courage throws
the utmost energy into their gunnery, -It
is also asserted that their practice is qaita
as accurate as that of the white artillerists:
Other considerations equal, and the expe
diency of arming the blacks in any circum
stances once determined—a subject we are
sure the Secretary will weigh carefully be
fore deciding ` thisfseulty of the negro as
a gunner would go far to commend his em
ployment. a.
