The Great Battle at Pittsburgh
Landing.
As everything connected with this tremen
dous conflict, which hu covered our arms
with glory, is interesting, we. have gleaned
from western papers and letters the following
intelligence up to the eve of the battle.
It is difficult to tell, with our present data,
how many troops we had in the fight. The
Chloago Tram,* gives the following as the
condition of affairs on the eve of the action.
After speaking of the position of the rebels,
it says
On the other hand our own forces, older
Gen. Grant, had made their line of defense
the Tennessee river, and passing up in an
immense fleet of transports, had accumulated
their splendid array in the vicinity of Savan
nah, on the east bank of the Tennessee river,
the county seat of Hardin county, and twen
ty-two miles from the southern boundary of
the State. The principal point of debarka
tion was, however,at Pittsburgh Landing,
nine miles south f Savannah, on the. West
bank, a point of more natural advantages , for
defense, and where, indeed, at the arrival of
our troops, the enemy had just completed a
battery, so little were the rebels prepared for
the fall of Donelson. Of the federal army
and its composition we wait to Speak MOM
advisedly and in detail, but we can say hero
they wore the dower of oar western troops.
A week since, on Saturday, the advance of
Gen. Buell'it army arrived on the Tennessee,
opposite Savannah, and commenced crossing
the river on Sunday morning, thus forming a
junction with Grant, Gen. Grant, in the
early part of last week, sent a force to destroy
the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, which
they accomplished, tearing up ten wiled of
the track, and thus breaking the connections
between the rebel lines. Hut the' rtibels rap
idly repaired the track and restered conned
tion'between their lines, and were constantly
receiving reinforcements of- men and mini
tiontA via this road at. Corinth. There were
in the united armies of Buell and Grant one
hundred and seventy regiments of infantry
and cavalry, with a magnitiicent equipment of
field batteries.
Thus for some days these two immense ar
mies have rested over against each other ' their
pickets constantly exchanging shots, iced
skirmishing being of daily occurrence.. The
Federal camp at Pittsburgh occupied a beauti
ful site, a broad, open area, filled with tents.
stretching back to 'the base of a range of
dense wooded In this position they .
hare been attacked, as we learn.from our last
night's dispatches, by the enemy under 'Gen.
Beeuregard, who staking. , &Gillen - the Dane of
the fight, has ventured only to lose. It viduld
seem that the first intimation of the desigh of
the enemy was to be gained from the events
'of two days previous. An officer whO left
Pittsburgh Leading , early Sunday niortiOg,
reached Cairo the same night at 11 r _xt alte
said, while four or fire of our regiments . vieie
drawl) up on dress parade, Friday swaying
last, 4th Inst., at Pealtidge—a place a few
miles in the res.' of Pittsburgh—a force of a
thousand rebel cavalry was suddenly seen ap
proaching for a light. Our men were as well
prepared as the necessity of the time would
allow, and advanced to meet the enetey, when
a skirmish ensued which resulted in the rout
of the enemy, the killing of several of . his
mon, and the capture of fifty prisoners. •No
one was killed on our ide.
This Pea Ridge mo cment must have pres
aged the gagersl enga ement of Sunday, 6th.
This description gives us some one hundred
and fifty thousand mi‘n in the conflict. ,We
think there is a .inistake about Can. Baru
having, his army with,Gen. GRANT previous to
the battle on Sunday. As we understand the
dispatches, on Sunday afternoon, during ; . the
hottest of the fight, Gen. Bunt crossed With
one Division, which be commanded in person,
and the same evening another division MM
.
ed, and on Monday morning another. At the
beginning of the contest, our troops were out
numbered ; but on the second day we lore
greatly superior, and had the advantage of
fresh troops.
We must admit that the rebels fought'
.bravely and well, and shoired themselves
worthy of a better cause. •
All accounts say, that the rebel soldiers were
kept in profound ignorance of passing Arent'.
They were not even allowed to read the Con
federate prima. Believing the tales told them
by their officers, they *speeded to march to a
victory, instead of which they went to :death
and defeat.
The Cenfedenste army ooneisted of the bulk
of the troops in the West, and no doubt were
the best they Lad. The Columbus, army was
there, that part of It not still at Island No..
19, and the Bowling 'Green army, and such
°then-troops as could be gathered by railroad
from every quarter. . . •
Our Troops Complimented.'
Prof. Lieber, of New York, has • son, a
Lieutenant in the Ninth Illinois; the young
man lost an arm at Fort Donelson, and . his
father came_yout West" to see him. ThelNew
York Evening Nat gives the following at the
Impression be received :
,
Prof. Lieber speak! { In the highert tarots of
the spirit of the western soldiers. He 'aye

Prom this test vote, it is seen that the Dem
ocrats are oppomed to all measures ever look
ing towards the removal of slavery, which has
so cursed our country; and brought all theme
calamities upon us. The two great parties of
the country are hero brought face to face—the
Republicans opposed—the Democrats favors
ableto slavery—at legal if not favorable, they
are unwilling to do anything whatever to op
pome it. or remove it.
Masi the Rebels Have Lost.
In their defeat. at Pittsburgh Landing, on
the Tennessee, the rebels bavelost mere than
a battle. Their defeat there 'is their 'ruin.
This is very plainly made manifest bi the
following description of the situation by a
correspondent writing from the army, on the
morning of the battle:
A moment's glance at any map of the
Southern States will, show the importance of
the present rebel positions in Northern Miaaia
eippi and Alabama, and how utterly desperate
their fortunes become the moment. they are
defeated here.
Corinth, it will be seen, is.at the junction of
the Memphis and Charleston and the Mobile
and Ohio railroads. From this point the road
stretches northward through the whole of
Western Tennessee to Cumberland, Kentucky;
southward the road runs through Eastern
Mississippi 'and a corner of Alabama, te
Mobile on the Golf; westward a road runs
direet to - Memphis, 'and eastward' through
Florence, Ala., Chattanooga, Tenn. ' and At
lanta, Ga. to Charleston, South Carolina.
Corinth, therefore, commands the communi
cation to Memphis, the Gulf, and the seaboard
seceded States.
Not only no, but this Memphis and Charles
ton road ie Me raifrOad connection left the reb
els between Lonieiand, Afieeimippi, and all Ale
bilinti meet of Pensacola, and the Southern tea
board &Mei. Troops can only be sent east
from New Orleans, Natchez, Vicksburg,
Jackson, Memphis, Baton Rouge or Mobile,
or to' those points from Virginia, North of
South Carolina"-or Georgia, over the Memphir
and Charleston road, the. only. railroad line
now connecting the Rut and West of the, re
bellion. Let the road be once broken and , the
Southern Confederacy is out in two as effec
tually as if a Chinese will were built between
the Gulf and seaboard States..
Beauregard, then, Is .engiged in defending
the last connected line of defonse tife , rebels.
can poulbly adopt. Defeat him here, and the
war-throughout the Gulf States can" only be •
series of 'sainted strtiggles, the end of which,
no prophet is needed jto foretell: He has se
looted the moat impartant point along the
road for his main stand. West of Corinth, is
Grand
,Junation,--- ; where the New Orleans
branch of the Mobile and Ohio intersects the
Memphis and Charleston road. If defeated
at Corinth, he may endeavor to mks a final
stand at Grand Junction. Lose that, and he
has given us the key, to Memphis, New Or
leans and Mobile.

Mr. Forney, ins lets letter to the Pr..

Mr. Foticr, in a late "Occasional" letter,

though familiar to the country, cannot. e re

The editor of the Illinois State Register gives
the annexed account of a Rimming incident
which oceurred at the Hermitage, in August
last; which was in typeliefore we reoeired the
melancholy intelligence t f the death• of the
old hero :
Every thing that relates to Andrew Jack
eon, the JJnro of New .Orleans,, and the friend'
of his country, is of deep interest to the ,
American people. And althouglithe incident,
we are about to relate is, in itself, of no great
interest, it becomesrai to ns in oonsisgeence of
those connected with it.
At the Nashville bonvektiest of Augnaliat,
1844, we Visited the hermitage (only 'twelve
miles ,distant) inuompany with ' lndge J./eag

low-citizens. The hermitage was crowded
with people from almost every State, who
had been Invited thither by the venerable pa

Goy. Clay, of Alabama, was near General
Jackson, who wasi himself sitting on the sofa
in the hall of his residence; and as each per
son entered, Gov. Clay introduced him to the
hero, and ho passed " along. When Judge
Douglas was thus introduced, Gen. Jackson
raised his still brilliant eyes, and gated for a
moment in the countenance of the Judge, still
retaining his hand : Are you.the Mi. Doug
