Camp Lloyd, two miles north - bi -
Washington, on Meridab Hill. We omit, for
want of space, the former part of the" letter,
and give the following:
-Camp Lloyd is beautifully situated on the
side of the hill facing the city. We are our
rounded on ,sides with troops. We hand_
pitlolst, 104th, 54th Infantry, and the 4th
ivania Cavalry here.

as popular as ever. I believe be has done all
in his power - to make us eomfertable,and we
all know thit he is a thorough and efficient
commander. lie kuts been, and will be, ably
emitted by Col. Maxwell. The boys are elk
in the best ofrphits, and are eager to get hold
'of the long expected row. A reasonable
amount of practice with them is all that is
necessary to At us for the field. Our regiment
is considered by all military men who tome
seen la, as one of the best in the servica, so
far as suaeribt is concerned, and we have just
the kind Of • Colonel to make us so-in'eviry
respect. We are now in the brigade of Gin.

sociated PrMs, on board the dag ship, two
miles ahoy° Island No. 10, sends the fol
lowing:
The flotilla got underway at 5:30 this morn
ing—dropped down slowly tilt about 7
- o'cicek, when the flag shipheing about twenty

six guns have been counted. Eight mortar
boats shelled the battery above the Island to

shells reaching the Island. Gen Pope, sent
dispatches to Com. Foote, laying his heavy
guns command the river, so that neither the
steamers nor gunboats of the enemy could

Madrid all day, supposed to be the rebel` gun
boats, trying to force a passage. Seven trans
ports, near Island No. 10, are hemmed in.
The encampinents are supposed large enough
to hold froml6,ooo to 26;000 men.
Comniodore Foote is shelling the rebels at'
_lsland NO. 10 ; Gen, Popei batteries prevent
their, escape down the river. The rebels are
said to be from 15,000 to 20,000 strong. The
rebel gunboats are understood to be engaging
Gen. Pope's batteries.
Cato, March 17.--Theres nothing later
from Island No. 10 than the dispatch of to
day. The accuracy of the firing of the mor
tars,iesterday,fullj equalled previous-expec
tations. They threw 240 shells; the Benton
41., It is expected that use or more of tho
enemy's works will be reduced to-day, and
the place 'closer invested. it is thought .by
some that the rebili are marching across a
week of land-from the island to Merriwether's
Landing, on the. M ississippi,slia tent only four

W.ABBINOTON, March 17.—J. IL Holmes,
Secretary of New Mexico, leaves Wasithigton
to-day on his return to that territory, which
