unappreciable by the public. Had they

That Manassas Business.
The editor of the Chicago Tribune is -de
lighted with the achievement of our army
-on the Potomac, which has taken possession
of the formidable intrenohments of Manas
sas, without firing a gun, under the lead of
the modern Napoleon. Only mark the ex
-1 hubs:lnes of.his spirits:
We might say that the history of warfare
presents 'no parallel to this Manassas busi
ness and its results; butthen, you see, our
men are "volunteers," and— had they
notthe "youthful Napoleon" at their head ?
So our readers will understand that we are
in . gsod humor. We know as 'well as
anybody that the rapscallions who hare
just run away will probably find another
stronghold somewhere further down in the
Old Dominion; and we very much fear
that seven months more will be thought
necessary to reduos it in the way that Ma
nasals was overcome; but, what's the toss
of growling? That Washington army has
not, in all this tinie—Uhich ill natured
people say has been wasted, cost quite a
million a day, and is not that cheap enough
for the high honor that our troops have
achieved in running into the rebel in
tranchmetkus—after the rebels had run out?
Is it, we ask, worth while—we address
you, tax-payers—to grunt about a trifle
like this? We might congratulate the
country upon the feet that the, "great
ethologist" who has "reduced Manassas,"
has been himself reduced to a subordinate
position in which he_ will have mare time
to employ all his brains in the duties be
fore him; but. as that might be thought to
be an attack on a man who has just been
cut off stile knees, we leave congratula
tions to others, while we smooth down the_
public temper which is, we must say, some
what 'ruffled by recent events. General
Banks, when be got over the Potomac, and
Indeed, long before, found • way in which

we are pretty weltoontented with the week's
